      @@KJOff-Road Enjoyed seeing the strip down and rebuild of the pump, apart from the engine is a 421 any different to a 406? Looking forward to future episodes.

    • @KJOff-Road
      @KJOff-Road  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@clooperman3745 Yes, actually. despite the almost similar appearance on the outside, there is actially more differances than there is similarities. they share very few parts.
      The cab, even though it looks the same, they are not. mostly because of the bigger "Engine room" in a 406. and also, if the 421 is a convertible, the whole cab is actually a few inches narrower.
      Also somthing like the axles, they are the same type, but they are also narrower on a 421.
      And the frame and many other things are just generally bigger and stronger on a 406-series, and it needs to be, as it is a bigger and stronger machine. :)

    Yes, yes, and yes. I love to watch this video. At least is a way provided which can help many people to rescue their old, stuck ignition pumps to get into work again. (Which some people might not know: The engine is an OM615 that has been built into many cars as well.)
    Not to speak about your way to show us how to get sense into reanimating old technical material into useful environments in general.
    I linked to this video in a forum of which i suppose many members to consider it helpful as well.
    I like to follow your channel since it combines profound technical info with joyful test rides.

    Hooray, the pump is repaired. It's actually not that difficult. The ignition timing can be adjusted with the fastening screws.Those are slotted holes, you have to try them out. The 636 machine basically doesn't start without preheating. Good luck

    Those early Mercs need around 15-20seconds to glow properly. The connecting links between the glowplugs should be removed and a hot wire from the battery touched to the centre thread, if it sparks its good if not its bad. Only one plug could be working and by leaving the wire links in place it will spark showing power is getting to the rail but you may only have one operational g/plug. When you reassembled the pump are you 100% sure you got the fine spring connected properly?
    Thats called the start spring. Regardless of wether the engine is hot or cold the pump will always be in start fuel if that fine spring is connected.
    Only reason I ask is that it didnt seem to be pumping much fuel from the delivery valve holders undercranking. When I test those inline pumps on my testbenches fuel should be squirting up to around 75-100mm for each cylinder at 100rpm (pump speed so 200rpm on the engine).

    • @KJOff-Road
      @KJOff-Road  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, i did give the glow plugs a good 15-20 seconds. i just cut that bit of video, for the sake of time :)
      And yeah, i was getting sparks and hot wires, so the plug was doing somthing. but like you said, could be that most of them were not working. i didn't check them :)
      And yeah, i did get the spring on there, and everything. and the pump dose go to "Full open" for the start. but i agree, there really should be more squirting out of it. but this was also a problem before i touched the pump. (With the two elements that were working) so im thinking that maybe it's the engine driven "lift pump", that might not be working properly either. but i haven't looked into it any further. :)
      Thanks for watching!

    since you asked what to do with this particular little mog. I think it needs a collab with www.youtube.com/@DieselPumpUK Make the engine and pump like new, or even a little better. i think the engine would look great rebuilt, cleaned, painted, polished, anodized, etc. a tiny little turbo perhaps? that would give it the power needed to run larger diameter wheels and tires. the flatbed looks fine, clean it up, rhinoline it. the cab needs a lot of rust repair, but it really doesn't need to be super pretty. i love the stock dash on the Unimog. Used to drive one working for Schenker in the 80s. so i vote for a stock interior, even stock seats. i think a cage would be wise, just in case you do roll it.

    I noticed the upside down oil filter housing which is identical to that used on the M100 V8 6.3 liter engines > I always wondered why they had that plug on the side of the hosuing and I am guessing that on the Unimogs engine it helps the oil drain sack to the sump when changing the filter.I hope the filters are cheaper than the M100 filter which are over $100 AUD now.

    • @KJOff-Road
      @KJOff-Road  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The little plug, in the side of the filter housing, is actually a fill plug. so that when you have changed the filter, you can fill it with oil, to "Prime" it, for the first start-up.
      And yeah, luckily the filters are a bit cheaper than that :)

    • @KJOff-Road
      @KJOff-Road  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It didn't look like it had been taken apart before. i'm thinking that Bosch simply bought japanese bearings. (as they have always made good bearings) so it was probably easier/cheaper to just get some good ones from them, rather than set up their own production. But that's just a guess.
      The engine in this one is an OM615. it think the 190D had the OM601? but really, they are very similar, the 601 is just putting out some more power. :)

    inline bosch diesel pump, when cleaned and well manteined are reliable and hard to die... anyway how it goes up with rpm, the kind of smoke, irregular minimum, there's still an air leak somewhere into diesel line and pipe, don't looks light blue as if burn oil, just white air combustion from diesel... that's why revs up hard and minimum it's not stable... well, swap engine, hell yes, this a tractor engine, and for modern traffic simply can't do the job... of course depend on the future of the red mog if worth the money and time to do that... Mercedes OM 617 5 cyl, turbo and tuned could be a good choice imho...

    Little bit of brake clean in the intake might help too

    Injectors are plugged with junk. Soak them in a heated mix of diesel and injector additive for a couple days.
