Amazing what a person can find at an estate sale! Great story Mike! I love hearing every detail about refurbishing gear. In a former life I collected and refurbished Mesa Boogie amplifiers and it was always fun to find those little treasures and turn them into tone monsters after a thorough tune up! Good Times! and I'll see you in a minute....!

My first drum was a Kent. Champagne sparkle. never considered keep in a Kent in my vintage collection of snares but after starting to record drums what my ear likes behind the set and what the microphones likes can be two different things so you have to be open to trying any drum to get a good sound.

My first set of drums were a 3pc silver sparkle Kent drum set.bought them through Sears and robuck catalog. My grandma got 10% off so the drums delivered to the store for pickup was $90.00. That's the kit I learned to play drums with. That was 57 years ago.

Hey, Teach...I'm learning more about drums! As a singer, I wish I had known more about my instrumental backup all these years, but better late than never. Thanks, Mikey!

There was drum store in Milwaukee Wisc owned by a real character, Bill Faust. Bill could be difficult, particularly if he didn't like the way you "looked." That being said, Bill knew drums. I remember him talking up Kent drums saying that, for the price, they were as good as anything in their price range. He had numerous Kent "orphan" drums in the store's inventory. He was a believer in the company.

Kent drums were made in Kenmore, N.Y. (basically a suburb of Buffalo, N.Y.) up until the mid-1970's. They were a 'budget' U.S. made brand made to provide a lower priced alternative to the 'name' brands at the time. They were very common in my area (western New York) as just about every musical instrument store which sold drums and percussion instruments sold Kent drums. They were usable drums but the hardware was not state of the art and the shells as far as the bearing edges were 'hit or miss'. They provided drummers who couldn't afford 'name' drums a decent playable instrument. I recently acquired a 4-piece Kent drum set, circa 1968; in 'mint/excellent plus' condition. I picked it up to have a piece of Buffalo drum history. The snare drum is a 5 x 14" wood shell, 8 lugs, with the higher end snare throw off than what is shown in the video. It has an Aquarian 'Satin Finish' batter head and an Evans G1 Genera clear reso head. I put a new set of snare wires on it and the drum sounds surprisingly good. The whole kit sounds quite good just a funky 'old school' kit..not a 'heavy bashing' kit but well suited for lower volume or jazz applications.

I need every drum! Is that normal?
