As a child, I used to love the quarry Shrewsbury kids pool! And we used to go on the ferry ⛴ in the river!
I love the swimming pool and I can't wait to do that again after lockdown

Christmas Carol was in 1984 I vaguely remember them coming into our junior school looking for some of us to play extra's , I can't remember who they picked but know for a fact they used local school children as extra's in the film ,those children today would be in their late mid to late forties including myself ....Good Video always good to see things from a different prospective !

A Christmas Carol was filmed in Shrewsbury in 1984 I believe and took three months to complete starting in March that year taking over the town and extras were mostly the residents of the town, I got this information during the Christmas Carol tour that they do every year in December, it starred a number of well known actors George C Scott playing a very good Ebenezor, David Warren as Bob Cratchett and Suzanna York as Mrs Cratchett, I have a dvd of the film and thoroughly enjoy watching it hope this information helps

Love Shrewsbury use to live nr there now live in Ludlow but still drive up to Shrewsbury now and then its a beautiful town with lovely shops,cafes,beautiful cathedral so much history too it .

When I lived in Oxon Hall, Shrewsbury from 2009-2012, I remember I think it was 2010 was an horrific Winter and it didn't get above freezing for weeks. I actually lost my Engagement ring when wiping thick snow off the car windscreen. Never did find it, so must be still there now.
Ahh so beautiful, the Quarry & Dingle are definitely the gems of Shrewsbury Town 🥰 I visited Shrewsbury today with my son, we moved away 2 yrs ago and he asked why all the shops were closed 😔 Explaining lockdown to a person with Autism has been very hard, but he loved how quiet the quarry was, bless him lol

Hi Brendan! The steps you walked up where you say "I don't think I've been up here before" are called the bear steps. You're standing in just about the oldest part of the town. The steps are called the bear steps because, about three hundred years ago, there was a pub there called The Bear. It was called The Bear because the owner kept a literal bear chained to the posts at the bottom of the steps. If you gave him a little bit of money, he would make the bear dance for you! Thus they are ever more known as the bear steps!
The pub is long gone - the cafe at the top of the steps (turn to your left as you go up the steps) was The Bear pub!

Loved this, I grew up in Shrewsbury, visited 2017 hope one day to return for an extended visit, my fav place in the world, wonderful video. Apparently there is a fake Scrooge gravestone in St Chad’s which they left there after making the film. Magic, cheers from Auckland NZ.
I'm sure it won't be long until you can enjoy shrewsbury again 👍😊. Yes there is a gravestone in there and I tried to gain access for this video but unfortunately, due to covid, the gates have been locked... But I can confirm its still there and would of looked great with the snow! I will hopefully visit New Zealand one day ☀️😊🙏

That alleyway you were walking along is called ‘Grope Lane’. I was recently told that originally it was called Gropec**t Lane! Always see tourists taking photos of the sign.

I have a memory of when they were filming Christmas Carol in the 80's. I was about 8 and they were setting up filming in the square. I remember the facades they put up over some buildings and I was running around in a load of fog from a machine they were testing. I eventually smacked heads with another kid i ran into.

@@BrendanExplores thanks, apparently they filmed a very small bit of Clockwise here, a street in Harlescott i think. Mainly used rural places in shrops & elsewhere though due to nature of film. Great Channel BTW.

Hi Brenda the steps which you went up are in the film and the shop with the slatted roof along side them doubled as Bob Cratchetts house the interior set was filmed in a unit on an industrial estate in Telford, the tattoo shop you walked past was Ebenezors office and his house was further back near to the old graveyard anything else I can help you with information wise about it please feel free to ask, regards Neil

Fun fact: The gravestone of Ebenezer Scrooge is actually in the grounds of St. Chad's. That would have looked fantastic in the snow. 🌨
I've tried accessing the graveyard a few times now but it's always been closed... But I agree, it would of looked great ❄️😊
Saw Ebenezors grave last time I was in Shrewsbury that was before lockdown would be nice to see it now covered in snow👍
I presume you all know it's a fictional grave used in the filming of a Christmas Carol starring George C Scott.
@@grange247 yes it is explained by the guide who does the tour that the grave is over a hundred years old and it had no visible name on it as it had worn away with time so a local stonemason was commissioned to inscribed the name on it for the film, hope this helps
