    The empty child was never a villain. It was a child infected and looking for his mother. He never intended to harm anyone.

      Right, the child was Chaotic Neutral at worst. He didn't know that what he did was wrong. His mind was affected by the nanogenes and he pretty much acted entirely on impulse and instinct, no different than an animal. You don't call an animal evil for unknowingly spreading a "disease" either.

      @@HunhowsShadowStalker so basically the idiots from Chernobyl weren't villains?
      To me they are. Even if it was a mistake.
      So as the empty child
      If something evil happens whoever did it, no matter with or without intention, is evil
      If a cop shoots, by mistake, an innocent black person, he will be considered evil because he was a dumbass

    • @HunhowsShadowStalker
      @HunhowsShadowStalker 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@szekesfehervar2230 Evil (noun) - profoundly immoral and wicked.
      You need a sense of morality to be evil. Someone who doesn't have a concept of "good" or "evil" can't be placed in either category.
      The Empty Child was a husk driven forward by a single thought: "I want my mommy". He literally didn't have enough of a brain to understand what he did and therefor was no different than a sick animal.
      The cop in your example would've been condemned for his idiocy, but he would only be "evil" if he didn't regret his action. If the cop felt terrible and did what he could to make it right with the victim's family, would he still be evil? Your example is too vague as we don't know the thoughts behind the cop's actions or the context behind the example. Did he _choose_ to kill the man only to find out later that he was innocent? Did something happen that caused the cop to shoot the man while he intended to shoot an actual criminal? Did the man jump between the cop and his target as a suicide attempt?
      Also, why specifically a _black_ man? "An innocent man" would've been enough, no need to bring race into this, unless you want me to think "Oh, he's black so the cop is racist". I don't look at people's races and don't take that into account unless it's made clear that the race is important.
      There's a difference between "doing the wrong thing" and "being evil".

      @@HunhowsShadowStalker Everything is a matter of perception
      I could be considered evil if I kill somebody's wife/husband in self defense although deep down I wanted to kill that person because I needed an infailable reason to do it. So...am I evil for self-defending despite wanting to kill that person without telling anyone I wanted to kill that person and didn"t do anything to make that person attack me so I could self-defend?

    Some of these characters weren't villains - they were victims, infected or mutilated, and they didn't turn good, they just got cured/fixed. The empty child is a prime example, but there are others. The converse is Dalek Sec - he didn't really become good, he was infected by humanity and got cured by other Daleks the only way they knew how.

      I know this is old but the correct term is antagonist since they go against the protagonist, and antagonist aren't always evil so I'm guessing that's what doctor who usually goes off seeing as some villains aren't evil or they are just doing something bad for the benift or their race/family
      So in this case the title should really be called times when the antagonist turned good or joined the doctor but villain sounds better

    • @cgmanning
      @cgmanning 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was going to say, the empty child wasn't a villain because the nanobots didn't know they were doing anything wrong. They just had wrong information about what they thought humans were supposed to be like and were trying to "cure" everyone else. On a similar thread, in Smile, the robots didn't realise they were wrong. They thought they were "curing" sadness by killing people experiencing grief, as they hadn't been programmed to deal with grief before.

    I think what I loved about Cassandra was she became an example of how age rots you as a person. She was over 300 at least during her first encounter with the Doctor. As we see when Cassandra (as Chip) goes back to see herself as a young woman, Cassandra was such a kind soul that she willingly held who she believed to be a complete stranger in her arms as they died, offering comfort and calling for aid. Cassandra was clearly a good person when she was younger, vain maybe. But nobody unkind would offer aid to a stranger so willingly

      Interesting, for sure. However it will take human sacrifice to accomplish. Like with the Slitheen "you've forgotten there used to be a real woman called Margaret". So even if it improves the moral compass of the daleks, that doesn't make it a "good" option, compared to just leaving the humans alone.

    Okay, just a bit of a statement; I haven't really seen the Empty Child nor George Cranleigh as villains all that much. Those Nanogenes that did what they did to Jamie were just trying to save him, but didn't understand much about human physiology (they thought that his gas mask was actually a part of his body) and later did the same to all those other humans because they thought that they were the same as Jamie (good to see the misunderstanding was cleared up). Cranleigh meanwhile had become insane from what that tribe did to him. He was even imprisoned by his own Mother (Lady Cranleigh) and Latoni (who have both been somewhat labelled as villains, though I know that they were just doing what they thought was the right thing) and his death was from after his brother Charles attempted to reunite with him, only for George to fall off the roof. Also, the Master was introduced in the show to be (as you said) the Moriaty to the Doctor's Sherlock and he and the Doctor have been forced into situations that have required them to work together (the Master even tried to get the Doctor on his side a couple of times) and I still hold up the fact (until the evidence comes in for the truth) that the latest incarnation of the Master was from somewhere between his "Harold Saxon" and "Missy" incarnations. And (although they weren't also mentioned) it's good to see that Dalek Sec wasn't the only Dalek to see the error of his ways (with "Rusty" fighting against the Daleks and Dalek Caan's bringing the Doctor and Donna together so as to stop the Daleks).

  • @PetersonZF

    You missed a lot from the classic series. Sara Kingdom in The Dalek Masterplan, who started out as a stone cold killer who took out her own brother (played by future Brigadier actor Nicholas Courtney, which definitely makes it worse). Then there's Tobias Vaughn in The Invasion who comes good in the last episode and helps the Doctor defeat the Cybermen having been a superb Who villain up to that point. Turlough joined the TARDIS crew to *kill* the Doctor but eventually turned against his boss, the Black Guardian. And Lytton is an outright villain in Resurrection of the Daleks, but dies trying to save the Cryons in Attack of the Cybermen and the Doctor laments that he misjudged him.

Also people who were possessed, hypnotized, or taken over but then manage to overcome the conditioning can hardly be considered to have been villains themselves at all eve. Otherwise the Doctor was a villain whenever he was possessed. As for the Zygons, a race is often only as bad as its villainous leader; just look at the Silurians. And River Song did not start as a villain; she started as a little girl, then as Mels the trusted childhood companion of her own mother.

      Eccleston was a great "Introduction" Doctor to ease us back into the show. We didn't know him long enough to get a good grasp of him, which is why there weren't many who complained when he Regenerated.
      Tennant was a great "post-Time War" Doctor, where we see his conflict and how it affects him. He could be extremely dark at times and that was often quite scary.
      Smith was a great "Funny" Doctor, almost always able to get a laugh out of us. He had his serious moments, but his humor never suffered for it.
      Capaldi was a great "Crazy old guy" Doctor, mixing his grumpy seriousness with his humor. He always had a comeback and was quite clear when he had enough of someone's crap.
      Whitaker still needs time to get through, but so far, she's a good "Socially confused" Doctor. She surrounds herself with a group of companions because she needs to re-learn how to be social.
      While Tennant is indeed my personal favorite as well, it's based entirely on opinion and if you prefer a different Doctor, you're not wrong in any way. Opinions differ and I can respect your opinion, provided you don't belittle others for theirs.

They were part of the Church originally, but split with the Kovarian chapter, so the other way 'round, from kinda neutral into a villain. Though we see that from the other perspective, when Tasha Lem explains it to the Doctor, kinda thing like with River and the Doctor meeting each other in the opposite ways. First the Kovarian chapter split, then Tasha explains that while we've already seen them being bad long ago.
