If you are a canner and have extra jars, or as you empty them, don’t store them empty. Fill them with water. They don’t take up any more room and you have water available.

Living rural I had a guy show up at my door at 3:30 am. I heard the car and flipped the bright porch light on. He had not knocked. I yelled through the door “what do you want”. Said he was here to pick up Randy. No close houses. I yelled back wrong house. He left. But I truly believe he was seeing if anyone home. I was still up with lights on. Had nobody answered I believe he was going to break in house or barn. He was pretty rough looking. When he left he did not stop at any other houses to pick up Randy. Went all way up to highway. I had “protection” in hand. Never opened the door.

Patara, my daughter, who almost never cooks, took over for Christmas dinner since I was sick with the c. She actually made potato soup with the ham bits. Shocking!! My grandson ate all of it, so she had to make another pot. Brought me a bowl, plus the bone that I'll use for broth. Guess I did teach her something. Yeah

Thank you for sharing your home and life with us. I mentioned I was hauling wood out to the property to a local business owner that we trust for various needs. (I'm hoping to build little connectable sheds for a cabin.) He said "you need wood? I've got 40-something acres on the mountain. You can have what you need." 😳😭😭😭

You are absolutely correct Patara! Now, in California, our pretty-boy 'Gruesome Newsom' has allowed our tax money to be used to treat illegal immigrants in our hospitals. In many cases, those of us who have legitimate medical insurance are forced to wait for people who are not here legally. I am a person with O-negative blood (the universal donner) and I used to donate my blood when there was a need. Well, I can say that ever since this insanity with our Southern Border began in earnest, I no longer donate so freely. I will give it to a specific person that might need it, but no longer will it go into a blood bank to be distributed to those who should not even be here. They take my money under the threat of law, but they cannot have my blood!
The government is our worst nightmare now!

Here in Denmark we are right now having a very unusual weather. At Christmastime we had a terrible storm that we have never seen before, people who lived close to the sea had their houses overfloaded with water and destroyed. Now, just 2 week later we have lots of lots of snow faling, shops cannot open as people who worked there can’t get through the snow, other parts of the country has so much rain falling which we havn’t seen for more than houndred years, and again now peoples houses are overfloaded with water. And I think hmmmmm, that a lot of people who have their homes destroyed with water ( due to the change og climate 😂) these people might be easier to make belive that something needs to be done with the climate, so they unfortunately proably will follow the agenda that is given to us from the government.
First “they” make sure to make life miserable to people, then they come with “the solution” to help people.
It’s a very funny dynamiks “they” try to make look like is comming only from the change in climate, which by the way is caused by we the people - 😂 We can’t belive anything that we are told.

Agreed! *Beyond winter" 13:00:00 minute mark = Here in the Omaha area, after a big snow storm, dumping lots of snow on the Omaha area, it sometimes takes days to dig out every street. The main roads might be cleared but sometimes the trucks & equipment are kept busy when blowing snow or more falling snow or ice makes those roads impassable again so the residential areas might NOT be able to drive anywhere for a week or longer.
It's easy to forget those times happen but they do.
Also, even deep ditches can fill with snow & drivers cannot tell what is a flat surface and what is a deep ditch. I tried to turn around one day outside Council Bluffs and one tire slipped into the ditch, in the deep drifted snow. Luckily a wonderful truck driver stopped with his coveralls on and jumped into the snow and pushed my small car back onto the solid surfaces. Bless him!!
And those extremes are what we all need to prep for. And keep your gas tank full.
Plus what if your heat is only keeping the place halfway warm enough? Humans and pets will gradually get colder over time, the body temperature of old folks and young children can be affected within a couple days, just by cool temps. It's hard for them to warm up very fast.
All of that we need to watch out for. And keep a thermometer handy, take your temperature every day, because not everybody can tell when they are slowly getting colder.
    Stay on it.
OK, quickly here: March 30, 1987. surprise blizzard in Omaha. Home alone. Lost power at home. My kids were visiting their dad across town. No phone access. My car was snowed in - in my under-duplex garage. I didn't own a snow shovel, just moved there from apartment living. Had no cash. Car had almost no gas in it, sitting on Empty. No food except peanut butter. No power meant no phone service at home and we didn't have cell phones yet.
I tried a trick I learned from my boss back then - pair up some of your problems and let them solve each other. Problems? My main gripe about my teen daughter was she refused to pick up all the pennies in her copper color shag carpeting in her bedroom. So I headed in there and combed through the shag with my fingers. Found 97 pennies. Planned my steps carefully. Emptied my small plastic trash can, used it to shovel the driveway. Made sure I had everything and my route was cleared. Backed my car out of the garage, didn't stop to close the garage door, which was fine, kept moving to avoid being stuck in the snow. Headed downhill to the gas station on Saddlecreek that accepted cash.. Asked the attendant if I could get 97 cents of gas and he made it happen for me. Yay! Drove a block up the street to an ATM and withdrew $40 to fill my tank. Filled the tank. Headed to work where there was heat and phones and lights and a vending machine of junk food. Yay! Stayed there a few hours. Headed back home, power was back on. The kids called. All was well. Taught me to PLAN AHEAD!FCOM

I appreciate your water comment. Some of us live where it's very cold. In '86 it was -30 to -40 for 3 weeks. Water lines that were 5' deep froze. When I put my water system in, I went 6' deep. Same for those frostfree water spickets on the side of houses. They make styrofoam bras for them in the shape of a boob. It helps insulate them. A neighbor said, "Horses will keep a creek free of ice." We checked on the creek yesterday. There was a little 'nose hole' in the ice. It's been the in the high 30's during the day an teens at night. In '86, the temp dropped about 40 degrees in 3 hours one time. This nose hole, under an '86 scenario could freeze shut fast and hard where the horses couldn't keep the creek ice free. You want a work out? Haul water to your critters when it's this cold!!

Good conversations and practical preparedness is something I enjoy and do for my family regularly as part of my routine and responsibility, it is nice to not be old-school alone . thanks for being a pillar of practicality. Your barn looks so good Patara. I have eaten one or two turnkey eggs and yes, they are delicious. I believe that whatever is coming down the road will not just occur in 2024, but carry over to 2025. Loved seeing your animals. Thank you for this great video.

God bless you for encouraging and uplifting everyday! I love your menagerie. It tickles me. I for one appreciate your efforts and your humor. Thank you. I felt the shift, no voice, you let me know what it was with your video. My neighbor got the voice. I have had the voice but not this time. It was a head scratcher. It washed over me and I thought maybe I had better pray, so I did. ❤

Loaded up on all animal feed and shavings for bedding last week. Just felt 'prompted' to do so. All set for the rest of winter. Looking into 'regenerative farming' for the near future. Many videos and blogs online about it. Hope to not have to purchase as many amendments and such this year. Great videos! They all help us so much. Keep them coming.....

I went after chicken crumbles yesterday for my layers. There were only 2 bags in the store. Usually they have a full pallet in the store and more in their inventory shed. I did not check to see if there was more in their storage. Need to go back in a couple of days and check to see if there's more out.

We lost power for 12 days here in SE ND. We THOUGHT we had everything lined up, but boy were we wrong! Lots or scrambling and rigging things to work 🤣 this has helped us set the trajectory of what future things we need to implement on our homestead! I highly encourage people to trial run a weekend with no power etc. See where you have gaps! ❤ we will be doing more trial runs in the future for sure! This really opened our eyes.

Thank you, Appalachia. May I say one more thing? Most people just take it for granted that our toilets will continue to work, and if they don't what do we do? The fumes are not only bad, but as I understand they can explode also. My order of things include: shelter (which includes warm clothes), water, food, First Aid and whatever else our family needs. Your wisdom and the fact that you share it is very much appreciated. May God be with you and your family.

So glad I'm finishing my evening out with my BFF on line Patara . I will be ready for the polar vortex. I have to be, I live in the North and we usually deal with a lot of snow during the winter. We had a 4ft snowfall 2 years ago. And get quite a bit each winter . Stay warm and dry.

A lady was assaulted here at her home while getting into her car. They took her bag and ran off with it. They can't find him. I told my husband he needed to take me to the range and teach me. Situational awareness is critical! Plus having a back up plan I think is a great idea.
My husband said we should put up beware of dog signs but it said let that be a surprise if they are stupid enough to break in and meet a 180# dog who isn't afraid if anything and protects his mama !
