- There’s something magical about climbing up into high mountains, and they don’t get much higher this far south. Pen y Fan - at 886m, the highest point in southern Britain - is just a stone’s throw away from the trail as it slips through the notorious ‘Gap’ between Cribyn and Fan y Big.
To get this high means a fair amount of climbing, so this is a relatively short Killer, but don’t let that put you off - it still offers around 1,000m of ascent and descent, with a few nice techie sections to keep you amused too.
The opening climb is the biggest, with over 400m of stiff hillside separating the narrow, pub-lined main street of Talybont-on-Usk and the rutted, open moorland section of the tramroad, which straddles the hillsides of Bryn Cefnog at over 500m above sea level. But, over half of this is lost in the descent to Pontsticill, which includes some steep and stony challenges along the way.
The Gap is rightly considered a classic. It climbs high into the Brecon Beacons on great tracks amid awesome scenery. The standard version on a normal mountain bike is around a half-day ride but this is a longer version, with more climbing and downhills. And that’s where our choice of bikes really come into play. Favourite ride, if you’re fit this is easily done on standard MTB. I’ve done it on an EMTB, Enduro and hard tail and loved it every time. My kids did it 2 weeks ago on trail bikes and they loved it. Check the weather pre ride.
Nice one James that’s defo one for an away day. 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
Totally recommend it - even on a terrible rainy day and minus an e-bike it was so much fun and a beautiful day out!
I did this ride with a group. Half were on e-bikes and the rest on ordinary bikes. halfway through most of the people on ordinary bikes dropped out. there was me on an endure bike with minions and no lock out. and two others on full cross country bike, the rest were on e-bikes. the route we did was a little longer, it was 25 miles u[p 3 mountains, but keeping up with guys on e-bikes was tough, especially on an endure bike. this video doesn't give the ride justice
Just done half of this on eMTBs, simply stunning
My favourite ride. Blessed to have the Brecons on my doorstep.
That Giro helmet looks stoopid!
This is my first ride I've ever done on a mtb as a road biker (very bad idea) Still want to do it again with my new experience
Going to do the gap loop this weekend, would you say it's suitable for my hardtail?
I'm used to quite a lot of bumpy rides but wondered what you thought
Any chance of a gpx file for this route please? Looks epic!
great video guys, love these ebike rides. Quick unrelated question, any idea which fox Jacket that is you are wearing in the video ?
Does anyone have a gpx file for this actual route?
how about just use a uplift as dh is the only way to ride atm as its way to wet and muddy to ride up hills Evan tho i have a orange stage 6
Just get a motorbike
Ebike hater incoming in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...
Not yet but the giro helmet was herendous
The hater self destructed. That's what happens when you're so full of anger about what other people are doing. Eventually you explode.
EBikes are king 👑🤘
Easy on your disability bikes, yes?
