I'll never forget; I was 20 yrs old and I was managing " Reno Discount Music " in Pompano Beach, Florida. The phone rang and I answered " Hello, Reno Music ". This voice said; " This is Barney Kessel and I need to rent an amp for a week ". I said ; " The Barney Kessel?". Yes was his reply. Next thing I knew Barney Kessel, Flip Phillips and his band came in the shop. Barney had his original '39 Gibson with him. Boy what a day for a 20 yr old kid!
In response to Andy Okus I too worked in Pompano Beach. I worked at Record World which was at the Fashion Square. When Micheal Jackson’s Thriller album came out, it was in the News “everyday” as being the most popular/requested album ever. But, nobody bought the album.... I mean no one! That’s when I learned about “fake news”.
People forget that, during the 40s through the 60s, Barney Kessel was the best jazz guitarist in the world. In Down Beat and Playboy annual polls Kessel won for as long as he stayed active. His improvised music is timeless and always interesting and he really could swing. He semi-retired to a life as a studio musician in LA. He played in Johnnie Carson's show band and did an occasional gig in LA. In the summer of 1964 a musician friend and I walked by a club where Kessel was playing. Small and intimate where you would not expect to witness a great performance like we did that evening. You could tell that Barney loved his music. We talked between sets and he was clearly a warm and intelligent person. He played several of my requests that I knew from his recordings. Reading one of his charts brought back wonderful memories.

Back to some good ol' Barney Kessel! If you are not already aware of that, Barney is on fire when performing live. I normally avoid these performances because of the double time lines which are a real mystery of Barney's playing but I felt this one would be a good start to try to crack the code of these lines... I have to admit it's been half a success. Although I think I'm pretty close with these lines, there is still a bit of note guessing. What I have done is; go listen to countless live performance to see if there are similar lines played more clearly. I was fortunate enough to find a bunch of these lines. Than wrote down all the notes I was sure and then connect the dots using my Barney Kessel's stylistic knowledge. Ex.; I know he likes to move 'aug' shapes in second or go through a bunch of m7 inversion... etc Also, his picking technic (for his double time lines) is a combination of sweep, legato and inside picking. So I have kept all of that in mind when writing it down. Chord shapes should be pretty accurate since I'm really familiar with his chordal style. Hope you'll like it! Have fun!
This is a priceless contribution to the jazz guitar community, only coming from an expert and a well-seasoned guitarist and musician. Thanks for sharing
This is the key that may open every other Barney Kessel performance, for us. The Gm/Bbm chomps, the IIm V7's and his chord development on those FMaj7s you will hear everytime in his solos. That "Just Friends" album is an absolute live masterpiece. He even sound a little bit fuzzy, just like Wes Montgomery in his Smokin' at The Half Note did. BTW, another great live performance in the opening track No Blues (which I guess, have all of the Wes Montgomery arsenal in a one 5 five minute solo) Thanks François, as always!
Wow..; what an amazing job. I already learn his version of "i'm thru with love" as transcribed by you as well as "love is here to stay". I found those transcriptions to be excellent ! But this is on a whole different level. Thanks again François.. What an amazing work !
Joined your patreon page, trying to purchase just Days of wine and roses buy barney Kessel but doesn't seem like I can. In addition I don't see any contact info on patreon. Thanks
Eh wes Montgomery does the best version I know I couldn't tell you that this was the days of wine an roses until like a min in an it doesn't keep with it too much other uneeded notes.

?? Theme start at bar 9 and is really straight forward, at 1 min it's the solo. What would be music without unneeded notes?
@ soloing doesn't mean it has to sound out of touch a good solo fits with the song.

@@martinwilliamson4909 I guess there's different valid philosophy on this subject, soloing and music in general is also about entertainment.... having fun and make the audience have fun. Btw, I'm a huge fan of Wes version but it has been transcribe countless times so there's no need of another one. Cheers!
What’s the use in comparing things? Just listen to what you feel like. Sometimes you might feel like Wes’ version, sometimes you might feel like Barney or someone else’s version. Why limit yourself and cause yourself such distress

Looks and sounds like you've done an amazing job. He's my favourite jazz guitarist - just because of the constant element of 'swing'.
Absolutely incredible playing by the greatest of them all and INCREDIBLE transcription. Unbelievably great work, François!
