Sometimes you guys post these without knowing the impact you make on someone's life. My mother has always told me I couldn't do it and you just made it possible. I feel like I can do anything now. Thank you💯
Wow!! So perfectly explained. This is just what I was looking for. I last learned how to create a paper pattern in my sewing class in 1970 (when I was 17) Today I am 68 and was looking to stitch my own long dress, and you brought back my memories of stitching. Thank you so much.
This is by far the easiest way to bodice pattern making. I have been doing this for about seven years and it has never failed. You can transfer it to so many styles. Well done Kim Dave.
To anyone who's planning on using this tutorial, use it as a GUIDE ONLY. Do not just trust that your vertical measurements will be the same as hers as she doesn't explain that those are HER vertical measurements, measure your own before you start. As she does not explain all of her maths (i.e. why is the bust divided by 6?), I found that they didn't work for me and I needed to add a couple of inches in various places because I have a much rounder body shape and so to actually fit my curves I needed to widen my arm holes for example. This is a good tutorial to start you off but it will not give you a perfect bodice block by following it exactly. Watch it from start to finish so you can see what measurements you need and how it's constructed. Then watch it again as you make your bodice block. Finally, test your bodice block and see where adjustments need to be made. You may need to make a few drafts to ensure it fits you properly.
OH MY LORD 4000$?? I wouldn't even convert that to my currency because it's breaking my bank account even in my own currency which 15x less than dollars, how rich are you??

You are very talented and so easy to watch. I went to school for fashion way back in the 80’s. You bring so many memories back to me. I love watching design videos. Great job.
Thank you for taking the time to make such an amazing video! I’m a beginner and your videos are so easy to follow and I love how and why you do the thing you do ❤️❤️
Oh, Kim, You are really a good teacher. This is so far the easiest bodice pattern making I have come through TH-cam. Every bit of the pattern was explained so clearly. I am really impressed. Thank you so much. keep it on. A big thumps up.
I'm so glad I found your channel, this was an amazing tutorial. :D I think you might just be my favourite sewing channel on youtube. ^^ EDIT: I made my own pattern with the instructions and it worked very well. I just changed the distance between the bust, waist and hipline according to my own measurements because I'm tall and most shirts are a little short on me so I hope this works out better. :) Thanks again for this amazing tutorial, it helped a lot.
@@forestsmom You have to take shoulder to bust point measurement ffor bustline (10 inches), and shoulder to waist measurement for waist line (16 inches) and shoulder to hip measurement for hip line(24 inches). hope this will help you
Hi Kim, lovely videos as always 😍😍. I just wanted to clarify something is the front waist measurement different to the back waist measurement? If yes how does one draft bodice pattern then for example if front wait is 17 and the back is 15 inches how does one draft such bodice patterns please. Thank you 🙏🏾💕
You explained that so clearly and well, and I appreciate you going through step by step explaining everything without a rush and with such clarity. I'm a beginner, and I've watched so many videos trying to grasp this, and they all move too fast and they were not clear in explaining . The way you teach/ illustrate what you're doing I cannot express how valuable that is; keep moving forward to succes.
I love how good you are at explaining things in this video!! I’ve run into a bit of a problem though where the baseline measurements you gave don’t seem to work with my measurements I’ve taken. For example you said to divide the bust measurement by 6 and add 1.5 to fine the upper chest, then go that far from the shoulder to get it.. my chest is 46” which gives me 9.16”, and it falls exactly where the bustline was plotted in the beginning of the video. Some of the baseline measurements you give don’t seem to be “one size fits all” so I would love to see another video with how to find exact measurements. But otherwise great video you are one of my favorite channels on TH-cam, you’ve taught me so much!!
With all the videos I've watched about pattwrn making, I said 'I could never learn how to make a pattern ever!😫'. But you made it so so understandable, you have given me hope, so much hope. And I can't wait to make one. Thank you Kim. God bless you.
Hi @ Kim Dave. Hi I just want to ask for clarification the distance 10,6,8 inches vertical lines from neckline. Is it fix measurements..or is it yours??
This is a great tutorial. Now can you do a video on how you then use this sloper with a new pattern to make changes to fit your size. I do get what is happening with basic sloper just don’t get how to put it with a bought pattern to fit me. Hope you know what I mean. I am a visual learner. Thank you Val🇨🇦
This is your pattern now. Use the position of down 6" for bust 8" for waist ect to find these points on your pattern and check your bust measurement with the pattern you have you can then see where it falls on what size to choose your size. Should you have a larger waist then bust you can then mark what size for your waist and connect those two lines with an easy curve like connecting a dotted line also same for hip measurement. I am not a professional so not sure I am helping but hoping I am.
@@TheVic923 very short story I want to tell you.... Years ago I started a business with a decent amount of knowledge and research. In business I was hesitant to call myself a full blown professional because my business venture was young and I did not want to misrepresent myself or skills. As time went on more and more I came across people who called themselves professionals who had not had hands on knowledge or only knew basics that most people with initiative and common sense would know. These people would try to sell.me services I needed but could rarely do beyond what I had already figured out on my own. These people get ahead at the expense of people that actually learned everything. Bottom line if you do it , it's making you any money and you are able to teach others the skill you are a professional and do not hesitate to call yourself one.
Once I take my measurements how do I determine how far to set them from the top of the paper? Our torso may be a different size, so how do I figure that? (You busy was 10” form the top and then waist Was 6 inches further... how do I know how far down to draw my own from the top?
I'm curious too. Based on store buy clothes I seem to have a shorter torso than most people and also have narrow shoulders so I'm not sure how to adjust this pattern to fit me. I am hoping to make my wedding dress with this help as well as using a dress form.
Great video. I have a question though. You divided the bust measurement in 4, so it seems the front and back would be the same width. Is this just for relatively flat chested ladies? Is there some other adjustment needed for breast with larger cup size? Thanks
I would measure with a tshirt on and measure from side seam to side seam at front and at back divide each of those measurements in half to find out your front and back measurements.
I was wondering the same thing but I think taking front and back measurements separately then diving by two and making the front and back pieces respectively should accommodate for a larger bust. Also, darting could fix the back panels however I think there would be too much extra fabric taken in with darts to create a fitted back if using the front measurements for the back panel.
I have the same question. Don’t think this fits everybody, front and back are the same? Before post this tutorial, have you ever tried whether it fit you?
I'm so thankful I came across your video. I haven't a clue how to start drafting. The other "for beginners" videos I watched had me so baffled. Thank you ma'am for your thorough description. I appreciate it. 🙏🏾 I think I'll be subbing for more help in the future
The variations are small from person to person but if you want a precise fit to your body then it’s worth it to measure yourself first imo. Look up how to take your body measurements, there are tons out there. I know this is a late reply but hope I helped :-)
I learned this in a Singer's sewing class in my country. I was only able to do the first six weeks course. But it taught me quite a bit. This is the best video I've seen. Great job.
This is one of the easiest patterns to make that I've watched so far, but can you make a top using the pattern, I'm not so clear how to with the darts.
She uses the pattern here in a later video as a base modifying the neckline.... To transfer the darts she used apin to make a hole in both sheets of papee atthe corners of the dart. then filled them in on the new pattern. You would have to add seam allowances if you wanted to use this directly i think
Good evening Priscilla. Am Josie from Ghana. God bless you for this tutorial. Our class teacher just taught us this in 2days ago and it was difficult for me to understand but thanks for this upload. You are adorable and sweet.
After going through so many videos this the first video I actually feel I can listen and watch. Some of the them all talk and others just dragging things on. So thank you
Ok. So at 3:45 you, mark 3" in for the neck and 5" in for the shoulders. Are those your neck width and shoulder to shoulder measurements divisible by 4?
No, they do not need to be divided by 4. They are just standard guidelines/measurements used to obtain the neckline and shoulder width. You are already working on 1/4 of the bodice, so there is no need to divide those two numbers by 4. Just use them the way she is demonstrating.
Best explanation ever I've learnt my basic bodice block at my sewing college but you've explained it better than all each step was by far clearer than what I learn Well Done Kim 👏 I'm going to sit with the sleeve draft now
Yeah she's assuming an average height. This will not work for petites and it's best to take your own measurements regardless because no one is proportioned the same

Once I take my measurements how do I determine how far to set them from the top of the paper? Our torso may be a different size, so how do I figure that? (You busy was 10” form the top and then waist Was 6 inches further... how do I know how far down to draw my own from the top?
i have the same question!!!
You can find these measurements by measuring from where your neck turns into your shoulder to your bust. And then from bust to waist, etc !
I'm curious too. Based on store buy clothes I seem to have a shorter torso than most people and also have narrow shoulders so I'm not sure how to adjust this pattern to fit me. I am hoping to make my wedding dress with this help as well as using a dress form.
I have the same question, too.
The top of the pattern becomes your shoulder, I would measure from the top of your shoulder to your upper bust
Hi! Jane here. Excellent instructions. Thank you for making it very clear.
Great video.
I have a question though.
You divided the bust measurement in 4, so it seems the front and back would be the same width. Is this just for relatively flat chested ladies? Is there some other adjustment needed for breast with larger cup size?
Thanks
You can add darts !
They'll shape the bodice to your chest :)
I would measure with a tshirt on and measure from side seam to side seam at front and at back divide each of those measurements in half to find out your front and back measurements.
It's the stsndard.
Just take and use your correct measurement. Works for every body size. as long as you are using your correct measurement.
🙏🏾 I think I'll be subbing for more help in the future
great tutorial! one question: i see that she has made the measurements a certain distance apart. should i change it according to my body shape?
The variations are small from person to person but if you want a precise fit to your body then it’s worth it to measure yourself first imo. Look up how to take your body measurements, there are tons out there.
I know this is a late reply but hope I helped :-)
Woww.....if u only know how simple n quite understanding this has been for me. Thank u really appreciate this. Going n try now
Thank you very much. Just one question though, how do you know where to draw the upper chest line.
calvin ferguson yes ,i also don t undestand it
Cris Tina i hope I’m not too late you measure from your shoulder until your chest
I think it’s an estimation - you divide your bust (36 in this case) by 6 and add 1.5. So 7.5 inches down from the shoulder line.
I saw all the geometry. I think even as a beginner I can do this. Wonderful demo.
i was justing wondering where is the back shoulder dart? Thank you for the video.
The back doesn't really need a shoulder dart, it's usually made of a pinch width, you can skip it.
Thanks. ..OK so I'm about to make me my first pattern. ..wish me luck 😊
Good luck Jen. Let us know how it goes 👌
Jen jen - Good luck, even though you should have make your pattern by now 😜
Jen jen hi! Any update on your bodice? P.S. My Nana used to call me Jen Jen. ❤️
I have a question regarding the neck depth. Since measurement is not mentioned in the video, could someone help with that?
She's so good at what she does, drawing this flawlessly. They taught us a bit differently in my sewing class but it amounts to the same thing.😮
what about the length? Is there any different in sizes?
I tried using these measurements for length and it didn't work for me. I will try to use my own measurements and will see how it will come out. :/
Best explanation ever I've learnt my basic bodice block at my sewing college but you've explained it better than all each step was by far clearer than what I learn
Well Done Kim 👏 I'm going to sit with the sleeve draft now
at 1:28, how do you know how far to start from the edge to start drawing the line? is there a specific measurement?
That's what I wanna know, too. Fingers crossed for a quick answer on her part.
I believe that there is no specific measurement, as you are just using the point to make a horizontal line
Yeah she's assuming an average height. This will not work for petites and it's best to take your own measurements regardless because no one is proportioned the same
