I think any group would kill to have this kid in their band, even at his young age. He's got it. And I'm so impressed with his discipline as a musician to hold down that groove non stop.
My man! I'll tell you what pocket is: Pocket is when the drummer plays LESS, but so solidly locked on the downbeats it's MORE. (Playing LESS is giving MORE) He fills just a few of the upbeat spaces and leaves the remaining space open as much as possible for other rhythm section instruments to fill (like bass, guitar, keys), so that that all the instruments are working together to form one unified groove. POCKET is what a great drummer provides to the rhythm section to lay down the groove in a very effortless way. Listen to the BASS player in this video; the bass player can do almost ANYTHING he wants and it makes the groove sound really funky--know why? Cuz that drummer is playing POCKET so HARD that no matter what any other instrument does, it's gonna sound funky!! It's locked in so hard and funky that it makes everyone else's job easier.... and nobody can sit still.... Dancin! ......And just to elaborate a little more, THE WHOLE RHYTHM SECTION IS PLAYING POCKET!! So, the drummer could lay right out, and just make a few almost random hits, and it would still sound funky, cuz everybody is playing pocket!

So stay in that pocket, little bro! You only get better and bigger from here and all to God's glory. (I also started out on drums at age 10 or 11 as well......LOL)

OVERPLAYING has gradually and seemingly become the new "pocket".... But NO. That AIN'T so! Question: Did Earth, Wind & Fire play all crazy and out of the pocket. Nope. Are they one of the tightest bands ever? YUP! (& still relevant today.) Moral of the story: As a musician.. Drummer or otherwise.. POCKET is your friend.

This kid absolutely rules. And I'm not just saying that cuz he's a kid who plays drums, I'm saying that cuz he's a kid who plays drums and is very, very...VERY good at it. Not many other drummers his age at this level yet. Awesome stuff.
I was in his same position, and still am and from what I hear, he has a rich pocket and definitely knows his way around the drums. I'll almost even say he has better pocket than I do, mainly b/c I want to do what everyone else can do. But what I've been learning is that Pocket is key to being a successful drummer. This video is a perfect example. An eleven year old playing pocket at a nat'l church convention with probably 2000+ people.
Just proves that you don't need super chops, you can play super simple in the pocket and sound just as good if not better than an over-playing chop crazy drummer. Keep time, stay in the pocket and you've mastered 75% of what makes for a good drummer.
Been a devout catholic for my whole life but in the last few years I have thought for myself and woken up. I believe you have to understand something that you don't want to believe in. This kid just has a natural flare for rhythm and percussion. It's the way his brain/DNA has grown (also practice).
Alright dude u in there keep it up,. He's keeping it simple but yet with just enough flavor so it ain't boring. Some other drummers need to take notice a whole lot more sometimes is OVERKILL!!!

Good job youngsta! Not that it's the most important thing at all but the discipline in your playing is where the money rolls in. Any drummer or musician that learns to respect the musical arrangement or compliment the arrangement is no longer a drummer he/she becomes a need. GOD BLESS!

By the way "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil not money itself. Just in case this young man wants to do this professionally (for GOD only youngsta!!) then he will be blessed to know that this is the type of playing that helps his resume' tremendously. it's good that youre new because you can start off knowing to stay in the pocket. it basically means keep things simple and steady. and limit your fills and crash hits to when it feels right. oh you also need to develop a feel, not everybody can do it. if you cant develop a feel and stay in the pocket, guitar might be better for you. you can shred like crazy on guitar and not mess the band up

Its more than timing. Thats part of it. Its overall groove and the ability to execute fills inside the "pocket".
