The most important place we've ever been...

  • All the way back in 2018, when we were travelling full-time in the motorhome with our daughter Jade, we visited Ypres, Belgium and stayed for the Menin Gate remembrance ceremony.
The Menin Gate is one of the largest British & Allied war memorials in Europe and was the first 'monument to the missing' anywhere in the world.
Every single night, there is a ceremony to honour and remember the 54,896 names engraved around its walls, along with the rest of the missing and dead who defended the area so hard during WW1.
This ceremony happens no matter the weather or number of visitors and has been going since 1928. We visited on a random Tuesday in April, expecting it to be very quiet and a bit of a 'show'.
I couldn't have been more wrong. Even now, over 3 years later, it makes me emotional. The atmosphere, humility and respect in that place was incredible and I'm so grateful we got to visit with our daughter and help her realise exactly what was sacrificed over 100 years ago.
If you've ever visited the Menin Gate, you'll know what I mean. If you've never been, here's a small taster to encourage you to add it to your list.
If you'd like to see more about where we stayed with our motorhome (just a 10-minute walk from the Gate), here's the info: www.wandering-bird.com/last-p...

Tears before breakfast? Perhaps not the best way to start the day. Thank you for reminding me of my visit there last year. A memory that will stay with me. The evening I went there had an orchestra and choir. Moist eyes on that occasion as well. A somber and perhaps essential place to visit whenever your wheels take you through Belgium. Thanks again, Trotter

Always takes my breath away when i hear the trumpeter. This time of year is a time to remember all veterans of War and conflicts, those that came home and those that didn’t. Rememberence Sunday is a hard day for Veterans and their families. Wear your poppy with pride one and all.

Not the stone of the memorial, but looking after the green bits around the Menen Gate (Menin Poort) was once my responsibility, for over 2 years. Thank you for this video and I hate to pick flies, but the Menen Gate was not built or funded by the people of Belgium. It was built by what was then the Imperial War Graves Commission and is now still maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, funded by many countries of the Commonwealth.

Couldn't agree more- both the atmosphere and the fact they do it at all is amazing.

Refer you to Jim Davidson and his comments on RBL and the tens of millions they have in the bank. Better charities to give to in this area that do more for our active and veteran service people.
