Speaking Spanish with someone who speaks (little to) no English is always the proof to me that I have learned something

That is absolutely fantastic! Just out of curiosity approximately how long did it take you to get to 1700 hours? At what point or how many hours do you think you had in where you really felt like everything really clicked into place and you really felt like you were progressing?

@@alb91878 clicking in general...idk honestly. Probably at around 800-900? But it depends on what you mean by "clicking". Is this being able to understand native content, speech, being able to understand TH-cam...yeah it depends.
As far as how long, I did about 3.5 hours a day up until 1500 then I slowed down to 2 hours a day. I did 3.5 for about a year and 2 months. Now I'm on 2-2.5 and it's much more sustainable lol. I'll be cruising along until I feel like it's sufficient. I'm looking for a certain level and I'm not completely there yet.

@@GregandLisaLewis-vz6ut I believe that living in Spain and having ease of access to those countries as well as many native speakers there with you guys will definitely push you all to do it. I’ve been told this several times and I’m seeing the reality of it myself, but they always say that “The hardest language to learn is the first one.” Not including your native language obviously; once your start learning something else you’re already very aware of what works for you and you’ll have the confidence that you’ll get there as long as you’re consistent and patient.

I recommend anyone who wants to learn any languages through comprehensible input to use the wiki online. Many comprehensive input is found there, it really helps you find resources. And in different levels of difficulty. I am watching the kid show Salsa I found on there along with the super beginner videos it’s so perfect and goes together quite well.

You both are on a great learning journey. I see more in the comments of praising versus information. I will and like to be real on learning Spanish.
(Gringos/Gringsas) are learning a language to communicate yet you will never know all communicated to you from a native speaker. The proof is in your situation, they said (lead, egg plant). These are nouns that you would not know on a regular bases in Spanish to understand when spoken to you by a native Spanish speaker. This will happen with verbs, nouns, propositions, etc.
This is why it is a long journey to learn how to communicate situations in this spanish language but more importantly understand clearly when spoken to you from a native Spanish speaker. I am sure they said a lot you both did not know or understand in spanish. It is a journey of experience and immersion.
I live in Baltimore and my baseball team has Latin players. One particular player from the Dominican name is Mateo. I have him recorded doing an interview with an English speaker interviewer. Mateo speaks real good English when he knows what you are saying and his response is clear in English. When he was being interviewed, what he did not understand when spoken to him in English, his interpretor told him in spanish and he responded back in English very well.
So I am glad you both brought up not understanding what was said at some point and time. Lead and Egg plant I have never known or said in Spanish because it was never needed to know. Matter of fact (berenjena...Egg plant) I would never remember that like my own language because it is not ingrained in my brain like a native versus Egg plant in my own language I was born in. Have not said Egg plant in years but I have heard it for years so it is ingrained if I never say it another 20 years based on recall.
Good stuff you both and keep building vocabulary.

No problem, in Spanish, as you know, the pronoun se is used a lot and in different ways. In English, when we ask someone "how do you say ....?" we really mean "how does one say ...?" but as you know, very few people say that because it sounds old-fashioned or snobbish. But in Spanish, they do say "how does one say ....", it's not old-fashioned for them. It also works for other Spanish questions/statements where in English you could say "one" meaning you. Knowing how to use se is one of the keys to sounding natural.

I'm still probably, and depressingly, a0 in french but ive found my experience is reading ability comes first, then understanding the general meaning of what someone is saying and finally speaking. Like you don't need to understand grammar too deeply to get the gist of what someone is saying but to speak yourself, you will have to use the rules.
