I was a GA for the Pride of Mississippi that year. Finally getting to experience the Sonic Boom of the South in person was a real treat. Both bands have their own identities and absolutely own them. As for who really won the drum battle? Everyone who stayed to see it in person. Thank you, War and Thunder, for your incredible performance!

I was with the Pride drum line in the early 90's (first year that Pride Jam was played). I still recognize some of these cadences. Think I heard Level 4 or maybe it was Drop it in the Slot?
@@jamileus04 I still give the nod to Jackson State, although SMU's percussion program is highly respected. Their instructor has a method book that's used all over the country. (Rudimental Remedies) You should check it out.
USM looked like they half assed it because WT was Tenor&Scotch they needed that wake up call. At anytime a tonal line can and will get there clocks cleaned by any manor of section if they play like USM did
USM did their thing! I don’t think JSU expected it. But also they have 2 completely different styles and song selections so it’s almost not a fair battle for either side.
Bro their snare were never together. Its not who can play technical but who can be cleaner. This wasnt even close if you want to say it was competition. WT won by shear cleanliness alone. Its a showcase and thats what we'll call it... Okay buddy...?
These School and organization with big funders.. W & T DISCIPLINE TO GO UP AGAINST A BIG FUNDING SCHOOL LIKE THIS AND USE WHAT THEY HAD AND GOT THE WIN
So here’s my humble opinion. J-State Pros: visuals are on point licks are clean, and snare line looks and sounds as one. The tenors play with good form and technique ... Cons: the snare drums (the equipment NOT the players) have a very muddy sound to them. No pitch basses. The cadences are very remedial, just a bunch of triplets, 5-strokes and flams. Nothing really technical. The snare players play with good form and technique, they just don’t play anything technical/ complicated...But looking at them play, I can tell they could play very technical pieces if they had them....Solution get the snares some flam heads or just get brand new snares period, add pitch basses for a richer and fuller sound. Southern Miss: Pro: plays very technical cadences. The sounds of the cadences are very clean and fuller in tone. Cons: the snare line is too relaxed. Everybody looks like they’re just hanging out, and happening to be playing the same cadence. Even though it sounds good, it looks sloppy. They don’t look as one. No visuals, and the little that they tried, looks like crap. A snare line should look and sound as one. Dont get me wrong USM cadences are grooving, but they have no flare or discipline when playing it. So it falls a little flat. Solution the snare line needs to tighten up and show more discipline when playing, they need to focus on looking and sounding as one. Work on visual presentation. So as far as sound goes, if I heard just the audio of this battle, hands down I would give it to USM.... But I didn’t I saw the video of the battle so off of presentation and execution I would have to give it to JSU.....
Not disagreeing with your statement it’s the drums I would like the expand on. The reason they may not have tonal basses is from a projection standpoint, that’s why they have chest tenors for a mid bass, the quints/quads do the work of the high\lows within the drumline. Based on the music mostly played r&b/rap/classic r&b , the setup does the job. The snares yes, you are correct - the other dynasty’s they have sound so much cleaner. That’s a lot of maple shell plus a lot of metal on the drum. My opinion is dynastys look good, sound good but struggle with projection. Honestly I believe that WT needs more time to understand how to tune their snare drums. The drums they have are still kinda new. Probably try looking at more vids of both drumline s they might play a lot more than original cadences
usm was enjoying what they were playing it was a casual drum battle thats why they were so relaxed ive met dr. wooton who helps teach the drumline and he knows when to be serious and when to be more casual and groovy with things
Ur comment is really biased jsu doesn’t need tonal basses or flam heads on there snares because this isn’t a corps styled band what don’t you corps people get jsu uses low tension snare and blast basses to be heard across the stadium if they had tonal basses and high tension snares it would never work or sound right with there style
@@terrorblossom4829 I am not a corps person. I grew up playing is the show band style. I was front line snare player all the way up to college. JSU sounds muddy and they play very remedial cadences. The ONLY cats that think J-State is raw are cats from in and around Jackson. A drum line like Norfolk or NC A&T would run through them with their warm-up cadences.

Now that I can hear this up close USM was not as clean as I thought. They just have crisp Kevlar tune. I am only on the 1st cadence though
Even dirty tho, they... nevermind.

Who decided that this was a good idea. I guess good sportsmanship on JSU’s behalf, cuz this was not a battle. 😂
Careese Williams it was more of an exhibition for both styles
I still dont like how USM said it was just a small showcase but then did full cadences while JSU omly did half ones.
Great sportsmanship
Funk-1 or Funk-5 would have ended it early.
WT intimidating than a mf lol
I don't know if it was the way it was being recorded, but I would have like the volume on our tenors and bases to come down some on a couple of those
Entertaining. Great video

Sooo, is the Black snare player in the middle for skillset placement OR symmetry/decor?? 🤔
Both drumlines sound great, but USM sounds silky smooth here.
