    Can't figure out why some people hate ND so much. Starting QB cheats on a test, he's out for the season. Guess Americans - particularly SC fans - have a problem with accountability and high expectations these days.

      Fair point, you expect your players to make those plays, those factors were out of this control. I will say though, Lane did quite a poor job of managing the clock once they failed to score quickly. I never really understood the hype surrounding Lane Kiffin, especially after the Raiders debacle. I feel like the downward trajectory of Lane’s head coaching career was a combination of him getting jobs he wasn’t YET qualified for & poor decision-making on his part. Remebr those “fire lane” Kiffin memes? 😂

    Watching this awesome moment the day before ND faces USC at home in 2021. I can't believe I am saying this but I do miss the BCS era of NCAA football. The new scheme of a final four isn't giving us enough variety in who plays for the championship. We've seen Alabama in the final four every season (with exception of one, I think) since this started.

    • @Whoopdido777
      @Whoopdido777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for this long post, but I love college football and once I get to talking about it I just can’t stop. 😀
      Well an expanded playoff would help that problem. I saw some breakdowns on ESPN of what an 8 or 12 team playoff would look like this year based on the final records (or maybe it was before the conference championships) and the scenarios were very interesting. I mean let’s face it…at the moment Alabama would still probably get to the championship game or at least the final 4 regardless, but at least it wouldn’t be a forgone conclusion.
      And to anybody that says that the kids would be playing too many games, I would suggest shortening the regular season. Tell every D1 team to take one of their FCS opponents of their schedule so they all play 12 D1 opponents like Notre Dame and UCLA. I mean is it really a game when you play a team that’s so overmatched that the score is 35-0 at halftime and the starters are all on the bench and the coaches have even agreed to running time? What’s the point of even playing that game? So, like I said eliminate it and then instead of finishing the regular season 12-0 you finish 11-0, then you have the opportunity to win the conference championship to finish 12-0 and every team would have the same opportunity to end up with the same record as Notre Dame. I guess the only snag with my proposal is UCLA because they play 12 D1 teams and a possible conference championship game so they would be the only team that could end up 13-0.
      I do have to admit that I’m a Notre Dame fan and I like that they’re independent and I hope they stay independent, but I also understand that their independence does pose a problem for the committee if and when they’re ever in the mix. Personally I still think they should stay independent, but should add a game to their schedule. They can do that by playing Hawaii on the road in “Week 0” or one week before the season officially starts. Sure, Hawaii isn’t exactly a powerhouse, but at least they’re a D1 team. That would give them 13 games like everybody else and could also serve as a nice recruiting trip. Notre Dame has traditionally gotten gotten a lot of good players from Hawaii actually.

    • @michaelmatusek777
      @michaelmatusek777 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tl7975 imagine you are a professor at a college and your entire class fails an exam. Is that the students' fault for not studying against an impossible exam, or is it the professor's fault for giving them an exam that is way beyond their level of performance? In this case there are a lot of contributing factors, but "testing better" is not a possible solution because the students have never faced the type of questions on the assessment.
      So it is with college football. Why are we throwing underperforming teams into the four-team playoff when we know they will get destroyed against teams that have dominated the entire college football landscape for so long? Its not rational and its definitely nonsensical. Take this year, for example, TCU had a great year but they were dominated by Georgia and everyone knew that would happen whether they wanted to say it explicitly or not.
      That is why the NFL scheme works; a handful of teams competing to be in the top is a better model than well over a hundred college teams that only play against a fraction of the pot competing for the top spot. How do you "play better" when there is no metric to measure your performance against until the end of the season? It makes no sense at all!

    As an ND fan, and USC hater, going for the TD at that point was actually not a bad call. They needed a TD either way, and they weren't going to get a better chance at it. With 2:40 left and only 1 timeout, they knew they'd have to be lucky to get the ball back with good enough field position for a field goal, let alone a TD.

  • @JohnHoulgate
    @JohnHoulgate 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    That looked like some pretty dumb playcalling. Not once did they try to run to the outside or do an option play. Think inside the box when the box is already stacked.

    • @Nobodyimportant85
      @Nobodyimportant85 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you're very close to the goal line the defense stacks the line and dares you to throw. You can just run it in if you have a fantastic run game and/or a superior matchup on the offensive line but SC didn't have either of those things enough to be successful and I think my Irish could predict their playcalling, too.

    It's really hard to build a solid team when your hands are tied behind your back. I think it's fair to say Kif should stay at SC two more years after their probation period. He came to SC at it's low times..Most top coaches turned down the job because they didn't want to deal with the penalties that were coming.In my opinion Pete should/ve stayed and rode the ship through it's down period instead of leaving. So I give mad props to Kif for taking the bull by the horn & dealing with the crisis!

    Yea i agree, he deserves a ton of credit for getting USC through this stretch, and sticking by them.Yes, the scholarship reduction has hurt what could be great seasons at SC. However, i think that what we've seen in his years as head coach since Carroll left is going to be a continuing trend. Good to great offenses capable of scoring with any team, however the defense isn't going to be able to play to their standard for 13+ games without costing a couple games. I could be wrong though, we'll see

    Never understood why USC didn't go for the field goal on 4th and goal and try to make it a one possession game at 22-16. They then could have tried for an onside kick to get the ball back and try for the winning touchdown. A touchdown and extra point could have won the game for them at 23-22.

Talk to me when an Alabama player graduates from a respectable course and has career options outside of football. If I'm the defensive coordinator and my guys are backed up in the end zone against a team with great receivers, you bet your ass I'm telling my guys to maul the receiver if there's even a chance he can catch the ball. It's called taking a smart penalty. ND's run defense is unreal, and the pass interference takes away the options through the air and forces the offense to play to ND's strength. Bama is good, but I sincerely believe that the SEC is in for a surprise come January.

ND definitely didn't play their best this game, they managed the game against a mediocre USC team. Let's not forget, Golson is also a red-shirt Freshman with a shaky past this season. It has to be tough to be a preseason #1, soak in all the Barkley for Heisman hype and end up 7-5 headed to a meaningless bowl game. Like Meatloaf said "Two outta three ain't bad!" ND has the best run defense in the country, and USC's only score came on a deep pass because that's where their weapons are. You ALWAYS take the points when you're down by two scores. In other words, they would have a better shot scoring on a long pass from Midfield than they would from the goal line. Sounds wrong, but it's definitely right. USC lost this game on purpose cause they didn’t want to see Florida back into the championship game versus Alabama.
    Clear indication is that kiffin didnt kick the field goal. You need 10 points. Field goal and touchdown do it for you. It doesn’t matter which order you get it.

      ND had not allowed a rushing touchdown all year. kiffin wanted to be the first one. i was at the game. kiffin is a fucking moron.

      @TheAnonymousGabe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Burk you never answered my question. Why the hell would kiffin go for it on fourth down? Two scores gets you the lead. Field goal and touchdown. It doesn’t effing matter which order you get it in. So he didn’t need a touchdown right then and there. And the dude was wide open. Obvious they didn’t want to see an all sec national championship game.

    The Irish have a bigger academic program, a bigger football program, movies made, legacies sealed - USC is your hollywood movie star team...They believe their own hype rather than play it. Let's put it this way, as of late, USC is like the Army...Talented no doubt...But The Irish are like the Navy SEALs. Calculated and precise.

      Nate, Not lately... and I believe in Kenny Niumatalolo. Once in elementary school, in the 5th grade, his teacher had to call home because Kenny was messing around. He came to school the next day w/ bruises from his dad. His teacher never called home again. Navy used to whip Army every year until, like last year. The tide is turning. Funny when Army had a former Hawaii coach leading them. Mirror image of each other. Similar scheme.

    heavychevy....too funny and true!!! I've been out to the coliseum (nicely surrounded by the LA ghettos) for 3 ND games over the years...ND won 2 of the 3 times.....SC fans rip on their coaches and team when losing and opposing team when winning....strange, twisted bunch, but what do you expect from the University of Spoiled Children.

    fair enough, but oklahoma also showed that it isnt impossible. if you dont trust your team to get one yard when it counts most, you should just forfeit the game right then and there. still you do have an excellent point.

    What do you mean "A goal line stand for the ages?" What????? USC was down by 9 points ! For them to win USC would have had to score on the first goal to go. Then, with more than 3 minutes left, they would have had to recover an on-side kick and then get within field goal range. Not impossible but highly, highly unlikely. The game was effectively over before the goal line stand took place.

      Ok, but disregard all that and consider getting 8 snaps inside the 7 yard line, burning up the clock and coming away with 0.

    I don't hate SC, but they are never going to have a great season under Kiffin. They will go 9-4,10-3 this year which will probably keep Kiffin at SC, however they will never win 11+ games, a Pac-12 Title, or more with him as head coach. He cannot build the defense necessary for that type of success. Really wish Haden would start looking for a new guy, maybe he will after this year.

    IRISH FB trends.
    *Leahe, Parsigian, Devine & Holtz all win National titles in their third season.
    *Irish replace three of the afore mentioned Champions with disasters in Brennan, when you first don't succeed w putting a Catholic H.S. league head coach in the helm for the Irish", try again with Faust, and the, "I couldn't inspire a dog with a box of treats. Besides, I would have eatent ehm all, anyway", Pillsbury Doughboy', Wies. Winning at N.D. begins with a winning head coach.
