    i would say dreamland is actually the album where they took the least risks. definitely listen to how to be a human being, it's such a unique album and one of my favorites ever. zaba is good and interesting too, just a handful of the songs are too slow for me to get into.

    • @ariesgrey

      also, i will say that glass animals is not a band i personally listen to for the lyrics. its much more the sound and the vibe, and the way the lyrics sound rather than what the lyrics actually mean, but thats just me

    • @TheZenomeProject
      @TheZenomeProject ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fantano (in one of his most off-base NOT GOOD's in recent memory, in my eyes) thought that Space Ghost ripped off Clarence Clarity's No Now. I don't really see the comparison between the two outside of maybe the bassline to "Those Who Can't, Cheat", and that isn't an exact match, either. Also, the Clarence Clarity project (another one of my personal favorites) basically made it a mission to cram as many samples and sounds as possible into one file, while Space Ghost does the complete opposite.

    For the record, Domestic Bliss is based on Dave's childhood memories of seeing his friend's mom in an abusive relationship and not really understanding the situation, thinking he can solve it just by begging her to leave. I agree that it's still uncomfortable to listen to but I can see where they were coming from with the lyrics

    Also Brad, for the Domestic Bliss song, it is about him witnessing that from a family friend as a child and thinking to himself from his young pov of 'why won't she just leave, go to Hawai' but not knowing the nuance and complexities of not being able to just leave. It's a naive look through the eyes of a kid. That's kinda what the album does, the sections are about the stages of his life he sings from.

    If you're not expecting it, the lyrics can definitely be overwhelming if you don't know Glass Animals well because they're so different and weird but I think that's the beauty of them and more people not liking them or hating them makes them so much better. I always thought their lyrics were funny and I enjoy them and what they represent. Ironically, Dreamland is what got me into Glass Animals and made me a fan so it's funny to see other any fan of them say that this album was "disappointing." I heard Heat Waves before it got popular when it first came out and immediately fell in love. I had earlier songs by them on playlists but hardly listened to them, but I said what the hell one day and listened to Dreamland and it took me on a trip I couldn't believe. My favorites on this album are SGCTC, WCOYM, & IASIL. I love everything about this album, and that's what brought me to listening to the others and want to see them live.

      I 100% agree with what you said. I had only heard heat waves but saw the cd in target and decided to give them a shot. I put it off for months but then I listened to the album and it was unlike any other experience I’ve ever had. I will admit, I ranked this album really high when I was first listening to it but now months later I can say I enjoy this album but I wouldn’t put it on a pedestal 🤣 the lyrics are also hilarious sometimes but definitely make more sense if you know what he’s singing about. I think older fans don’t like the album bc listening to this and HTBAHB are two different vibes (I haven’t listened to zaba yet). I went into HTBAHB thinking it’d be like Dreamland but it was quite different and I had a hard time enjoying it. But now it’s starting to grow on me. I’m guessing the older fans expected their weird funky sound instead of bubbly 808/trap beats lol

    How to be a human being (their second album) is my favorite album of all time, almost every song is insanely good (except pork soda, it just rubs me the wrong way but its not horrible) but my absolute favorite song is poplar street, the amazing baseline combined with the all the small little intricacies make this my absolute favorite song of all time. the rest of the album while not as good also has some amazing songs with mama's gun, take a slice, and life itself. Another cool thing about the album is that every song is about a person they met on tour in America (of course all dramatized) but still I think that's a really cool concept, and if you review another Glass animals album this is the one (also the song golden antlers form one of their eps is cool)

      I wanted to separate this out into a separate reply but everything I said about HTBAHB is opposite for dreamland, where on HTBAHB I love all but one song, I only like one song on dreamland (Tokyo drifting and only because Denzel Curry), where most songs on HTBAHB sounded grand and like it was telling a story, dreamland is constrained by the stupid trap beats and just sounds like incoherent garbage. 2/10 (the 2 is for the only 2 good things, Tokyo drifting and that one line in waterfalls coming out your mouth)

    I'm glad you gave the album another listen. This was the hardest Glass Animals project for me to get into, but now I absolutely love a lot of the songs. One thing I'd like to mention - I think you were very unfair about Domestic Bliss. I realize that you couldn't tell this just by looking at the lyrics, but this song is from the perspective of a six-year-old Dave who had just witnessed domestic violence in a friend's family for the first time. "You have no fucking idea how difficult this actually is" is kind of the point of the song. He's singing from the POV of a scared kid, and it's not a reflection of how he sees the situation now. I think it's actually a really beautiful depiction of how a child perceives an abusive situation, and I find it cathartic to listen to.

    For the next band you listen to, I would love to see you listen to Breaking Benjamin. They are a really good Hard Rock/Alt. Metal band that make really good music. If you do listen to them, Listen to either their album Ember (2018) or Dear Agony (2009). I love your reactions and keep up the great work dude! :D

    I think it's interesting cuz this is one of their only albums that references the singers own life/experiences. The other albums are more storytelling (although the lyrics aren't super linear it's definitely more... Vibes) and this one is much more self referencial. Probably why the album was more controversial w/ the fans. I don't hate it mostly because I really like the singer's voice, but ZABA is a better album imo especially in terms of creativity.

    • @finpin2622
      @finpin2622 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I remember discovering Glass Animals when one of their songs was featured in Taken 3 and loved their second album and I liked this album when it came out and still do like it but its been such a roller coaster since heat waves blew up. I was ecstatic when it seemed like they were finally getting recognition they deserved then slowly I became sick of heat waves and now the hate that they are getting is very disappointing especially because barely anyone has heard their first 2 outings.

    This record's biggest issues for me are the weird word vomit that feel like they are trying to create a mental image in your head and set a scene but it feels like "hey here's a random thing you might know from a certain point in time," as well as with the unfortunate case of the drummer's car accident 4 years prior I don't know if he was able to drum the way that most of these songs needed. In general this album needs some god damn bass or some punchy drums, it's part of why Tokyo Drifting actually kind of works.

    In terms of this concept, Magdalena Bay's Mercurial World executes the concept of being in a dream much better. It truly takes you on a journey of pure bliss rather than putting you to sleep with a boring instrumental and stupid lyrics. You might recognize Secrets (Your Fire) from a previous stream which you gave it a smiley ball. You Lose, Chaeri, Dawning Of The Season, and The Beginning are also highlights. Highly recommend!

    With Tokyo Drifting, the voice change is an intentional thing, though definitely hit or miss with people. When writing the song, the lead singer said he thought the beat (the latter half in particular) was too cool sounding for him to sing over, so he created the persona of Wavy Davy, who he references in the track. A character who ‘really doesn’t give a fuck,’ also somewhat paying homage to the stupid nature of people and himself in their teenage years to when their young adults. So he changes his voice to fit better, which personally I think works very well for the purpose of the song, but I can understand people’s grievances and issues with it.
