    1. Clarification: In the Catholic Church, the spouses administer the Sacrament of Marriage to each other in their exchange of vows, but it requires the formal witness of a Church representative, normally a priest who can additionally bless their union. However, if a marriage is not consummated due to a reluctance on one or both of the spouses' part, then a petitioned decree of nullity can be granted by the Catholic Church and both parties are then again free to marry.
    2. Fun fact: In addition to recognizing Protestant baptism using the correct matter and form as a valid sacrament, the Catholic Church also recognizes the civil marriages of baptized Protestants as a valid sacrament. This is due to the fact that through no fault of their own, baptized Protestants have not been subject to an episcopal authority, i.e., the geographical governance of a bishop.
    3. Marriage is one of the seven sacraments common to all of the four apostolic churches: Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox (Coptic & Ethiopian) and the Assyrian Church of the East. Apostolic means that they trace their lineage through a succession of bishops originating with the twelve apostles.
