Very helpful video as I am looking to buy more books of Atwood. So I was watching this while putting books on my amazon shopping cart. LOL. Cant wait to dig into them! I have read a few Atwoods (obviously not as many as you did), and I got to say, I disagree with a couple things you mentioned in the video. I have read both the Handmaid's Tale and Alias Grace. I think Alias Grace is the better one as it's one of my all time favorite books. I also read surfacing recently and quite liked it. If that, to your opinion, is the worst of Atwood, I should expect a lot of fun reading the other ones! :D I have also read Cat's Eye and Blind Assassin. Both great! Thanks again for this! :)
This video just popped up for me. I've only read The Handmaid's Tale and have had The Testaments on my shelf for about a year now, I really must read it!
Been waiting for this 😁 My ranking would probably be something like this: 9- Surfacing 8- Edible/Life/Bodily/Robber/Oracle 7- The Blind Assassin 6- Heart/Hag/Pen 5- The Testaments 4- The MaddAddam trilogy 3- Alias Grace 2- The Handmaid's Tale 1- Cat's Eye I found a lot of her stuff forgettable, as in I would remember as soon as I read the blurb but couldn't tell you off the top of my head what a book was about. But when a book sticks, it really sticks 😁
I adored this video! I recently read my first ever Atwood (Cat's Eye) and completely adored it! Can't wait to get to The Handmaid's Tale and the rest of her backlist!
Loved this video. Wouldn't say I guessed, because I knew your fav! I have only read 3 Atwoods, I was pretty new to BookTube and your channel when you were doing the Atwood readalongs, wish I'd joined in though because there are so many I haven't read yet! I loved the Penelepiad, I loved the way that she wrote something that was so reminiscent of Homer, it was like reading Penelepe's version of the Odyssey, which was great. Love the Handmaids Tale, of course! I didn't really enjoy the Edible Woman, I just didn't get it! So many more Atwoods to read!
Your cover of the penelopiad is so nice! I was thinking it wouldn't be high on the list but it is nice that you liked it! So many Atwood novels! And so many I truly didn't know anything about. Especially the less known ones. Ooh I was surprised to see alias grace come in second! And I definitely knew that the handmaids tale was going to be first :D Such a good concept and I really need to go back and watch the tv series of it soon.
and Surfacing is my favorite book...it is amazing ....I have read it countless times... The two other novels that I have read are The handmaid's Tale and The Blind Assassin..... I loved reading them ....but, Surfacing is very raw and that is what is fascinating about it ....and it is brilliant
Great video! I first read The Handmaid’s Tale when I was 16 or 17 and I have a feeling it was for A Level but perhaps not - so long ago now! I have read it several times since and I enjoy it still every single time. I have had Oryx and Crake on my tbr for so long - it’s one I’ve been interested at the time. I also haven’t read The Testaments yet though I bought it when it came out. I need to read more Margaret Atwood!
I found your video in search of an excuse to reread Robber Bride. For some reason I don't remember much about it. Glad Alias Grace is so high on your list. Read it this summer and it was one of the the most sumptuous reading experiences of my life.
The only Atwood's I've read are Handmaid and Testaments. I agree with your thoughts about the YA bits in Testaments not being needed, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as you. It was fun but just not quite there for me. And I have Alias Grace on my tbr shelves so I'm looking forward to reading that!
I read The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments, and Alias Grace. I got a recommendation yesterday for Cat’s Eye and The Robber Bride. I plan to purchase them today. Yesterday I watched her documentary: A Word After Word After Word is Power. I really enjoyed it a lot.
I was waiting with bated breath for you to bring up the edible woman! It's my favourite all the Atwood novels I have read, it plagues my mind (in the best way possible) so often. That cover of The Robber Bride is incredible, that whole series of covers is, do you know what that series is called?
I've only ever read the handmaid's tale, currently watching the TV series as well. Alias Grace and The Robber Bride sound great from your description so will start there I think 👍🏼❤️
I've been enjoying reading Atwood lately, Canadian Icon. I just finished Edible Woman and I was super entertained the entire time, she just presents the theme so humorously. Blind Assasin confused me the whole way through until I got to the end and it all clicked 😂. Handmaids Tale is a classic, duh. I liked Testaments, but I feel like you won't love it unless you read Handmaid's and watched the TV show. I appreciate this video, definitely gives me some ideas on what I may want to read next.
I've read all her books, and the one's I go back to the most are the Oryx and Crake Trilogy and Stone Mattress. When I try to reread Handmaid, now, I get too angry. It's all coming true! Thanks for this review. Now I have a reason to reread several of her books.
I started the handmaids tale and then put it down to read other books I really need to pick It back up as I also have the testaments waiting on my list xx
Oryx and Crake is top of my list. My overall order would be slightly different and I would put The Heart Goes Last higher. I thought it was great and just laugh out loud funny in places. I love the dark comedy in it.
I like how "stan" made an appearance in this video as well :- ) I've only read The Handmaid's Tale and liked it but I'm not super interested to pick up the sequel given the mixed reviews :- ) Congrats on finishing the project!
I’m in between starting Surfacing or The Robber Bride. I’m new to the genius of Atwood. Just finished The Handmade’s Tale andThe Testaments. I loved them but due to some trauma I have suffered in the last year it took me ages to read them. Is Surfacing really that boring. Thank you 🙏🏼 💓
I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve had to deal with a trauma! I personally found Surfacing to be the least interesting of her books and I love Robber Bride but Surfacing is a lot shorter! Whichever one you go with, I hope you enjoy it ☺️
MaddAddam wins for me. It was dark, dystopian, weird, intelligent, and I love those things, but mostly it was so funny, I don't think I've laughed so much in another book. Atwood's sense of humour is so winning, if I didn't know she was an awesome person I would still like her.
Of your bottom 5, four of them are ones I haven't read yet (read and adored The Penelopiad)........I want to read her whole back catalog but not super enthused to get to those, LOL. The others I've not yet read are Maddadam, The Heart Goes Last, and The Robber Bride. The Edible Woman is my favorite, agree that it's very strong for a debut--you can see the amazing novelist she'd go on to become in that book, for sure.
This is so helpful to someone like me who hasn't read any Atwood and needs a quick rundown of her books before diving in. Great video!
Oh yay, that makes me so happy to know! Hope you find a book you enjoy ☺️

Lovely wrap up! I’ve only read the Handmaids Tale but I must admit I’m tempted by a couple of the others…my poor bookshelves!! 😂xx
Ooh, I hope you enjoy them if you pick them up ☺️
@@WhatVictoriaRead I’ll let you know x
The handmaid's tale & Alias Grace are the only book i read and loved both of them so much. These two books are the reason why I'm here😂
They are such great stories! I hope you enjoy any others that you pick up 💛

Have only read The Handmaid's Tale so far, but I think Alias Grace is the next Atwood I'll read. Great video x
Thanks! Let me know what you make of Alias Grace!

I think they’re the Virago editions and yes, so pretty! ☺️💛
I loved Hand Maid's Tale and Alias Grace. My brain had a really hard time processing Oryx and Crake Lol.🤗
It’s not for everyone but I’m glad you enjoyed the others ☺️
I've only ever read the handmaid's tale, currently watching the TV series as well. Alias Grace and The Robber Bride sound great from your description so will start there I think 👍🏼❤️

Nooo you really should read the sequel I think. I actually like it more than the Handmaids Tale. Everyone’s reading preferences is so different.
