I laugh at GCN+ actually including the current era of cycling within the discussion of which era's were the "golden years" of the sport. Current bikes have no soul and they're in the garbage 20 years from now. Bikes from the 60's/70's/80's/90's fetch big money. Even the jerseys from the old days adds value to those decades. Jersey's today, they are very aerodynamic and light but again like the bikes..... who wants to collect any of these new jerseys? Maybe Lotto cuz they still have a vintage edge to them. The Golden Era's of the sport are definitely the 80's bleeding into the 90's, and the 50's bleeding into the 60's. Honourable mention the 70's thanks to The Cannibal, yeah due to his stats at The Tour, but his Classics resume including Classics rivalry with De Vlaeminck. 50's includes Track Cycling, post-war technology really pushed the sport forward. The 60's were good yeah. Anquetil. Kudos to GCN+ though, for expanding the access to the sport with their subscription offer
RBP fast becoming one of my favourite cycling TH-cam channels … just great videos you have definitely found a gap in the market my friend… happy Christmas 🎄🎅🏾✨❄️🥃
In the past the grand tours (giro, vuelta and tour) were closer to ultracycling endurance races. Surely riders were heroes and had a huge mental strenght. Though in modern cycling races are considerably faster and I'm pretty sure that if you took one of the big names of today cycling to the past he could win all the races. Athletes become always better.
Riders from today could adapt to compete in 60s but of course these races would be tougher for them from endurance perspective. Also available gear ratio didn't allowed to high cadence on climbs back then. So for some riders it would be less comfortable. I remember for instance cassette used by Froome during TDF - it was close to mtb ;-) Anyway it would be amazing to see Pogacar against Merckx :-)
@@RoadBikersPoznan Merckx was a god, he was better than anyone else in every single thing, I think he could be the only one who could win also today. What you said about cassette is totally right, in the past riders used to climb with impossible ratios, I remember my grandpa's bike had a 47.21 as the lightest one and with that he managed to go up to climbs that are classified as hc today on strava.
These excuses "If you do not dope you won't finish Tour de France" Is rubbish. Why they do not add 2-5 more racing days? And then they can make it without dope.
If the humans have not changed in 50 years, and I dont think so, all those guys were doping in 1967, the fight is today cyclist make a lot of money and it is unfair cheating at all
Awesome video, as a newbie, I love to see these videos about the history of the sport
Cracking edit, insane what they did back in the day
Great video, truly a part of the golden age of cycling.
All the best!
