- Paroo & Ten playing. Ten was returned to us after 16 month in his new home, He was attaking them and there six Mastiff Dogs ! He can be a bit 'Nowty' if he dos'nt want to do somthing but not that bad.....
I never seen a cat want to chase something that big! This pair look lovely, though. They clearly know how to have fun. :)
It's like a cheetah chasing a gazelle! They are both beautiful!
they love warm weather, but they get dehydrated easy because they LOVE to run! i have two Pharaoh Hounds of my own. One of them is 3 1/2 and the other is 7 months, but they BOTH run like hell at the dog park! :P

What a lovely pair!! I am glad to see these two getting along as I'm very interested in getting a PH. I breed Bengal cats and I was afraid the PH prey drive would be too high, but it is obvious that a well trained and socialized PH like this one can play well with others, especially dog savvy Bengals!!
I wasn't sure you had a real Pharoah Hound until I saw him standing still. When I saw his ears and tail when he was standing still, he looked just like photos I'd seen in history books of the paintings on Egyptian tombs.
But they're not from Egypt...

Well, I'm no expert, partially because I'm a cat person. However, I googled Pharoah Hound and one of the sites listed was www.dogbreedinfo.com/pharoahhound.htm. This site says, "The breed's exact origin is unknown, but one belief is it began in ancient Egypt. Numerous Egyptian artifacts and writings show a dog that is undeniably a direct ancestor of the Pharaoh Hound." It also says that the breed was developed around 4000 to 3000 BC. So, it is obviously a VERY old breed of dog, no matter what its origins are. But, as I implied, my knowledge of dogs in general comes from what I read and see on TV shows such as Dogs 101.
P.S. I'm from Malta, the actual country of origin of the dog, and its quite annoying to see that quite a lot of people (including people who own them) who just throw Egyptian infront of the dog name. Its kinda like saying the Bald Eagle is a Canadian symbol.

DNA research has determined that both the Pharaoh Hound and the Cirneco dell'Etna and similar Mediterranean breeds are of recent origin and while they may be related to each other there are no links to Ancient Egypt. The Ancient Egyptian dog on the walls of pyramids is the Tesem and apart from the wedge shaped face doesn't look at all like a Pharaoh Hound.

@myahele Peaceful co-habitation between Pharaohs and cats is possible, but don't count on it. My friends' Pharaohs killed their cat who had been their best playmate for years. They were outside in shadows and somehow the dogs didn't recognize the cat as their buddy. They spent days inside looking for their cat. Sad.

well, at the dog park, my older one is very independent, but when she is at home she is a freaking lap dog! and in the morning, she gets soooooo excited to see anyone when they come downstairs! she jumps and licks and she whines when my mom is gone at work... as for the puppy, well, she is just a fun ball of loving energy!

Can this breed be an apartment breed? I'm an athletic man, I jog every other day, and the days I don't jog I ride my bicycle, so the dog would get (I think) a good amount of exercise. But I work at least 8 hours a day, away from home. Thanks.
Any idea how these dogs are off leash in the country? Will they run off almost every time?
Will they protect the house? Will they chase coyotes off?

im in u.s. here the pet stores are closely connected to large scale breeders. the breeders are worried about competition, so expensive breeds are mandatory spay on females.

awesome, thank you. i tried to purchase a p.h. 8 yrs ago from a local pet store but they said she would have to be spayed before i got her. had cash in hand but walked away.
oww.. but i heard theyre very independent, im not sure how that will suit me.. i like pretty attatched and obedient dogs..since ive never had a first dog :P

first, educate yourself on dog care and canine behavior. you can't leave dogs alone all day -doggy day care. lots of great athletic breeds that can make great apt dogs. a puppy requires around the clock care for at least 22 months. they require proper nutrition (some dogs have food allergies.commercial foods are crap), yearly vet visits (sometime more than once a year due to tummy upsets or accidents). can get expensive. if you get a dog then know you will be commited to it for +/- 15 yrs.
