Great video. I live about 50 miles southeast of there. Been a while since I've looked in that area. Just now finding your channel so hitting the big red subscribe button, and catching up on what you have posted. I love the old cast iron. I'm 64 so been around it and using it for years. I have several pieces that was passed down. Some BSR, Old script Wagner, Older Lodge. I really enjoy finding old rusty pieces and putting them back in use. Keep up the great videos.
it's a problem evenly heating larger skillets. they are really only good for biscuits in the oven and use over a campfire where you can heat the whole surface. if you use a stove element, it will heat the center and possibly warp the bottom.
@@bobs5596 I will usually preheat the larger pans in the oven before using them on the stove-top for that very reason or start them on low until the whole pan is heated evenly.
Awesome! Always learn something from your “Wild” episodes. We have the same exact marked BSR at 25:40. I got a great deal on mine as well, but I have some work in getting her back to cooking shape.
Steven I love seeing your videos and your knowledge of casts iron. I always drag my wife along to hunt the antique shops for CI she always complains until we get there then she likes looking. we have a cabin we live in me and my brother and a friend built in 2017 it looks like we live somewhere in time! there is cast iron all over the walls. I wish I had your email I would send you some photos. anyway I love your videos and the word u read at the end,,,,,,,,,,,
I do not currently have any Chicago Hardware Foundry pieces to share. That would be a good video. There is also very little information out there on them.
I wanted to ask a question. The other day I bought a chicken fryer. The size is 8 which is on top of the handle and is raised. The handle has the bsr ridge. No designations other than that. It has a ring on the bottom and included a hammered lid with a patterned drip knobs. Sorry this is long but could you tell me what you think this is. Bsr or something else. Thank you and really enjoy your videos
LoL!!! You bought that skillet BECAUSE it has odd markings?!?!? BrotherSteve, You have the fever worse than i do BY FAR!!! Hilarious! Great upload. Blessings and Abundance upon You and Your LovedOnes.
Hi Stephen enjoy your videos and have a few pieces handed down. I found a giant griddle in the forest 35 years ago leaning against an oak tree. Think old hunting camp site. I cannot find out a lot about it. Its a 31 1/2" X 19 1/2" US The Estate Stove co 1943 EST 3961 It weighs 45 pounds it is in good condition a little rust on underside. Used once since I have owned. Any idea, I heard WWII issue. Thanks Ed
Hi there... I'm having trouble trying to find any information about Martin cast iron. Do you know anyone that has any Martin's who would do a show with you? And where do you look for prices?
I bought a small wood-handled saucepan; (Made in Taiwan), at a thrift store. It looks like cast iron, but when I cleaned and then cooked in it, it had that wet metal odor. Does that mean it is made with other (cheap) metals besides cast iron? Thank you
It sounds like it is in need of seasoning. About three layers should do it. when applying seasoning layers, remember "Less Is Best". Keep the layers as thin as possible.
Thanks! I love your 'In the wild' videos. I keep hoping to see my Griswold dutch oven in one of them. I even bought the book, but no sign of it. It's my reliable user--several times a week--and I'd love to know something about it. Maybe someday!
@@castIroncookware I'm in Ohio, so PA and OH makers are more common. I have A Griswold 8 dutch oven. Small logo, hinged lid, no bails or holes, with a lovely small hammered exterior finish. The book showed a hammered aluminum, but this dark and heavy, definitely iron. Maybe someday!
I've noticed when I find a lot of cast iron in one place it's usually overpriced. If you look around you don't have to spend a fortune to have a nice collection. I enjoy getting them cheap and restoring them myself. A lot of times I find a piece that I don't need at a good price so I use it as traders. Most people will take restored cast iron for their dirty piece. The larger the skillet the better it trades.
Always enjoy your hunting videos.and I'm with you I always find those strange odd ball ones to be the most collectable . Another thought is that you gotta wonder if maybe it was either hand cast or made by another foundry using a BSR mold. To me it's the unknown that makes it collectable. Great find.
Hi, If I ever found a Red Mountain 14 in good shape what do they generally go for? And yes, I really enjoyed the video! Sure would be fun to find a Red Mountain chicken fryer someday. Blessings back at you and yours, Rand
I guess the days of finding cast iron for $1 at a garage sale are over LOL. But frankly, up here in the North, you NEVER find cast iron at a garage sale. I did get 3 skillets (small, medium, large) for $11 from Boscovs about 20 years ago which I've used every day since. That same set is now $40, still a bargain.
You are my last hope. I have an old cast iron pot. It's deep with a basic wire handle and there's a small star mark on the bottom. I cannot find anywhere what the maker could be? Would you by chance know? Thank you!
Could you help a new collector? My friend passed away at age 85 His wife gave me some nice pieces he intended to restore. One is a HEAVY spider skillet with a prefect fitting Dutch oven type lid. No gate mark, but she said his mother cooked on it when he was a kid. Handle has raised 12 IN marking. Lid is marked 12. Both might weigh 15 pounds? What could this be?
IMO the seller is justified in asking top dollar b/c most pieces have been restored; i get aggravated with sellers in antique malls that ask top dollar for dirty, warped, and non-restored pieces
There was a lot of work put into those pieces. They were asking top prices but in turn they were top quality pieces. I agree that pieces that have not been restored would be valued much less.

Not at the moment but it is on the hope to find list.

Steven i have a. Bsr. Cornbread skillet with Patten pending. How old is it
They were made in 1967 and 1968. After that, they were all marked Made in USA.
If my cast iron has a wooden handle can I still but it in the over to season or will it burn the wood? Good video steve
You will most likely have to remove the handle. Just to be on the safe side. In most cases, it is not too complicated.
Welcome back
Thank you. I am planning more to come.

I read Mountain 14 depending on condition can be valued from $100 to $150. The condition, pour spout size and generation all plays a part.

Now that CI is gaining in popularity and people are learning more about the value, great deals come along less often.
At one time I had a cast iron ashtray that looked like a skillet. Were they made by the major manufacturers and are they valuable?
I have a number 10 A BSR with a single dot, I thought that was indicating a shift. Is it a casting issue?
I just got a 1891 dual griddle it’s awesome for the price

Since the red and blue book was published, has cast iron value went up or down?
Most have gone up considerably.
Just picked up a RM #8 with the 8 at the 7:30 position with two dots and an underlined 8 lid
Those are really cool!
It was worth the time to watch just to hear the price of the Red Mountain Chicken Fryer. Oh my...
