    Hands down the best Berlin travel video I've watched. I really appreciate the time you took to go in-depth about the historical monuments of the city. I'm travelling to Berlin from Australia in September and this has really helped me get a much better idea of what to expect. You've won me over, I'm going to post this and click on that subscribe button right away!

      Hey Teneal - thanks for watching and then actually taking the time to drop us some good vibes... we love getting comments like yours. We genuinely feel like we make the best content we can thats also helpful to others but TH-cam often prioritises other stuff.. just you saying you enjoyed means heaps to us. You're gonna love Berlin, it is honestly such an amazing city! Have a great trip.

      Daneger and Stacey - I definitely agree, it's quite unfortunate that channels like yours don't get as much advertisement as they deserve but I know you'll get there someday. Your videos are honestly too good to not want to subscribe! I'm super glad you took the time to write back so thank you!

    I walked thru checkpoint Charlie in 1986 into east Berlin and drove from west Germany to Berlin going thru the Soviet checkpoints. It was a very different era, glad I had a chance to experience it.

    When in Berlin take the public bus line 100 - it takes you to nearly all places to be. Its like a sightseeing bus tour, but cheaper (and you will "miss" the often not so funny comments of the tour guide). And - very highly recommended - take one of the ship tours (like you did). This is an awesome view on Berlin also for Berliners...

  • @JulesAr
    @JulesAr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The better Alternative to Checkpoint Charlie is Bernauer Straße (Subwaystation Bernauer Straße or Trainstation Nordbahnhof) there you can see parts of the Mauer, a memorial and a museum and it is a nice park too now.

  • @scfog90
    @scfog90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The holocaust memorial looks to me like an huge area where you think you can hide, but from every angle you`re seen and you`re always turning around to see if someone is following.
    Gives an immagination of the helplessness of looking for a place to hide during the holocaust.
    Underground there`s also a museum with audioguide.
    You made some really nice videos about Berlin :)

    The street is named "Unter den Linden" witch is literally translated into "Under the limewoods". The street is an alley of limewood trees. Presently most trees are cut of because actually there is a subway under construction under the street.

    best way to understand the holocaust memorial is probably to think of the claustrophobic feeling it might cause to you walking around inside of it. think of thousands of people forcibly moved by the nazis all over europe, forced into trains and being shipped of and put into the ghetto's (warsaw ghetto), pure chaos, little space, lots and lots of people. the arrangement of the pillars giving you an impression of "being lost" in the masses.

    • @beatsteak22
      @beatsteak22 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      KNGR I had this exact feeling when I walked trough it.

    • @dav1dc293
      @dav1dc293 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best way to understand the Holocaust memorial is to actually go inside the centre underneath & take the tour -eyeball roll

    • @Hurricane2k8
      @Hurricane2k8 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. It is also noticeably colder when walking through it (well, it was the time of year I visited the memorial) and is disorienting when you take a few turns without keeping track of the direction. It really has a chilling effect on the visitor.

    • @pros3795
      @pros3795 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samferdinand833 but why is It a memorial for the murdered jews, what about the 5 million other victims of the holocaust? they should rename it to commemorate all the victims, its kind of unresprctfull not to mension the other 45% of victims like they don't count they were also humans who where killed

    Next time you have to drive up the TV tower. When the weather is good you have an amazing view all over Berlin and way more with ca. 60km far! And until 2017 it was the highest public building in Germany.

    • @fjellyo3261
      @fjellyo3261 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      XShipper which building is taller in Germany?

    • @XShipper
      @XShipper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      fjellyo32 I missed a word: something like "viewing". Since October 2017 the Thyssenkrupp Test Tower near Rottweil has the highest public viewing platform in Germany. Sorry. For the actual hight with 368 meters all together the Berlin TV tower is still the highest building at all in Germany.

  • @elmuhaerte
    @elmuhaerte 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    ofc you can go up into the tv-tower is a public place, open to everyone, there's a restaurant up there and you will have an awesome overview of the city.

    Did you notice, some of the old buildings still have bullet holes from the war! In fact, when I was a kid, I found a hand grenade that was left from the war. Was a fun day, the police came and made a big fuzz to collect it and make sure it was safe.

    Late to the party this time, but a great sequence of footage showing the famous and not so famous aspects of Berlin. Once thing I did't realise is how wide some of the streets are - it looks a really spacious city. I wonder if (like Paris) it was planned that way? London, by contrast very much follows the lines of the medieval streets and has managed to shake off any attempts to plan the street layouts! Apparently Sir Christopher Wren attempted to draw up a blueprint for a "new" London after the Great Fire in 1666, but the local traders and businesses had set themselves back up in their original locations before the plan ever got off the ground!

    Nice video, enjoying this series! Always cool to see what an "outsider" says about your own country.
    Fun fact: At 6:32 the U.S. embassy can briefly be seen, and within the roof structure of the embassy, to the right of the American flag, is a high-power surveillance station (mostly for cell phone communication), run by the NSA/CIA. There were reports and rumors about this in 2013, and they were seen as confirmed when a German newspaper did thermal/infrared imaging with a special camera, showing significant heat emanating from that structure (which couldn't have come from the sun heating up the surface because it was done on a cold, cloudy day).
    The place is ideal for surveillance, because it's the government quarter, and they successfully monitored calls of Chancellor Merkel, and presumably lots of other politicians which are around there (even from other embassies). Anyway, long story short, if you walk anywhere near the U.S. embassy and talk on your phone, it's very likely that your call is being recorded and later automatically analyzed by the NSA/CIA. Bet you won't find this in your travel guide, haha :)

    Just got back from there today from the UK. Saw the same places as you (and the tower 😜) and agree the architecture and history is off the scale. Especially the Cathedral. With that in mind I hope you went to Potsdam, there's architecture there that made my eyes bleed! Also saw the Victory Column and Tiergarten, Potsdamer Platz, Reichstag, East Side Gallery and on our last day went to Wannsee beach! I agree Berlin is awesome the Germans are a great people and the public transport is second to none (recommend getting a Welcome Card that gives you free transport and discounted attractions). Auf Weidersen Berlin! 🇩🇪❤️

    Ich liebe Berlin...
    I've been there 4 times and each time seen something different... :)
    Interesting fact about the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe: All the columns are the same size - just with varying height of protrusion...
    4:32 When you were at the "amazing square", were you aware it housed "Denkmal zur Bücherverbrennung am 10. Mai 1933 (Memorial to May 10, 1933 Nazi Book Burning)"...?
    7:57 A very nice Bavarian beer indeed... The Dunkel (dark) is even better... :)

    You should have stayed on the square (4:30) a bit longer. Bebelplatz - that is where the Nazis burned the books. There is a subtle, but very meaningful memorial in the center of the square.

    Checkpoint charlie was such a waste of time, I walked by it and kept on walking, it was such a bastardized rendition. Memorial of the murdered Jews was sombre, the SS Museum/ Headquarters was really eerie being in the presence of such evil and reading up on it, gave me chills down my spine.

      If you go to the less touristic places like where I live you will see that berlin has also an ugly face. But I guess that's part of its fascination too. Every district/Bezirk is different, you can always find something new
