That “vibrating organ” sound that you’re referring to was almost certainly being produced by a Moog synthesizer, the equivalent functionality of which can be found on practically any smart phone or computer today but at that time would have cost a million dollars (in the dollars of that time, not adjusted for inflation).
Mancini was quite the theme-writer. He brought verve, character and humanity to any movie or TV show he penned music for, being a master of that soft lounge-jazz sound that people from all walks of life appreciated in many situations. Rest in peace, Henry. Thanks for posting!

This was one of a number of pieces that Mancini composed for various NBC News programs in 1976, to coincide with the new "N" logo and a major updating of the network's on-air graphics. At the start of each evening's newscast, the final part of the full theme would be used.

You're absolutely right -- this theme was so good that it even appeared on a recording that was used as background music in the now defunct Woolco department store where I worked during my college days. It was my favorite song on the album, and I'm glad to have finally found it.
I actually have the '79 version on my iTunes for a few years now, that's not too bad. I do like the original one I'm hearing here though, maybe better.

Sounds like the theme to medical drama show of that era
That theme song with the vibrating organ sound, just takes you back to a time, so long ago, my childhood and watching the news with my dad.

Henry Mancini also recorded a "patriotic fanfare:" theme that was used on political conventions and election nights well into the 1980's.
