ప్రముఖ సంగీత విద్వాంసుడు మంగళంపల్లి బాల మురళీకృష్ణ రాగమాలికను థిల్లానలో వాడి కొత్త ప్రయోగం చేసారు. ఇందులో అమృతవర్షిణి, మోహనం, కానడ, హిందోళ రాగాలున్నాయి. ఇదే కాకుండా శ్రుతి బేధం చూపుతూ తాయ థిల్లాన అనే మరో పద్ధతిలో రాగమాలిక రచించారు. అలాగే గతి భేదాన్ని చూపిస్తూ మరో రాగమాలిక, ‘అంబా మామవ’ అనే శుద్ధ రాగమాలికా కృతీ, తిరుపతి వేంకటేశ్వరునిపై ‘గాన లోల’ రాగమాలిక కృతినీ రచించారు.
ఈ రాగమాలిక ప్రయోగం కేవలం శాస్త్రీయ సంగీతానికే పరిమితం కాలేదు. భావగీతాల్లోనూ, జానపద గీతాల్లోనూ, సినిమా పాటల్లో కూడా ఈ రాగమాలికా ప్రయోగం తరచు వింటూనే ఉంటాం. కాకపోతే సినిమాల్లో చరణాలని బట్టి రాగాలు వాడడం కనిపిస్తుంది. కొన్ని పాటల్లో రెండూ లేదా మూడూ రాగాలు మాత్రమే కనిపిస్తాయి. పాత సినిమా పాటలు శాస్త్రీయ సంగీత రాగాలనుసరించి వరుసలు కట్టేవారు. అందువల్ల వివిధ రాగాల వాడకం పాటల్లో కనిపిస్తుంది. మునుపటి సంగీత దర్శకులు రాజేశ్వర రావు, పెండ్యాల, ఘంటసాల స్వరపరిచిన పాటల్లో ఈ రాగమాలిక ప్రయోగం కనిపిస్తుంది
