Noticeable here is the use of the multi-colored saddlecloths basically as we know them today. Suffolk had to be one of the first tracks to do that and you would not have realized unless you knew the names this was from 1987. This was about a tough a field as you could get for the MassCap, especially given this was NOT a Grade 1 race at any point, whether originally or in its revival. This also was not long before Suffolk Downs almost closed the first time later in 1987 (it would close for two years at the end of 1989 before reopening in 1992 and then closing for good in 2019). RIP Jim Hannon, the track announcer in the old days of Suffolk Downs before it closed the first time.
Tammi Cambell (rider of 3rd place Tour d`Or) is now know as Tammi Piermarini. On Monday August 22, 2011 Mrs. Piermarini rode Suger Trade to victory in the 3rd race at Suffolk Downs, thus becoming the 5th female jockey to win 2000 races. 1586 of those 2000 wins came at Suffolk: a good career for the Massachusetts native.
She had only been riding a few years at this point, but one of her strong points as I remember was getting a front runner to relax. She gave Tour D'Or a good ride that day, in no way being outridden by the Hall of Fame riders on the other horses.
This was a heartbreaker. I adored Broad Brush. Thank you for this. This Mass Cap was a stellar field.
