Guys… it's about following, not about mechanically matching like a robot. He is definitely reacting to her lead.
He is, but he is reacting too late
@@shoganflamemasta3975Such Imperfection is why we play and listen to the same score again and again.
@@jaewoopark3144 I agree, the problem is that he is presenting this educatively as an example specifically of rythmic lead-follow, where he fails to follow very noticeably. I'm sure he is a great musician with a ton of experience, and I'm not disputing that. But it's not like they're playing live, he could have easily done other takes and used a better one.
@@shoganflamemasta3975 I’m afraid I have to disagree with your view that he fails to follow the lead. The lead-follow relationship is significantly different from a dominate-obey, which I think is what you’re looking for. If he were merely to comply with the lead, it would reduce him to an accompanist. I believe the demonstration is good enough to show what he wanted to say. There’s no need to re-film it.
When you play in amateur big bands with people NOT reacting to one another, you start longing for such a great player. This is music lesson number one, after learning how to play the instrument: do listen and know who you should follow.
Even if you don't like piano or cello or this music style, this is a great example. Playing a jazz classic, they can show us the same, be sure of that.
Finally someone understands the importance of a cello in a group. Somebody said once, the cello in a group is like the butter on bread. It's the sexy, final touch.
you couldn't have said it better
my guy this is a cello sonata
like it’s not the final touch it’s the main fucking course
@@digitaldizzyExactly, not sure why this commenter's saying this here lmfao
Who the fuck said that 😀
This is like going for a walk together with a good friend. You are not marching at the exact timing. In a walk you sometimes match your pace. Sometimes one is ahead or behind. It’s the beauty of accompanying each other v
I love your comment, thank you
Ah so this is how that slight delay I sometimes hear in pieces doesn't sound like they are just messing up. It has a beautiful quality, such as one chasing after the other in their search to be one. ❤
Congrats, you just learned what phrasing and musicality are
@@meekah21this person isn’t even talking about phrasing or musicality.
Just explained the view to the delay between two voices, and appreciates it; now enjoying music differently.
Let live and let a person enjoy this point of view ;)
Everyone who says he is not following has never done any proper ensemble playing. His phrasing is reacting to hers on the repeat.
That's why it's the sonata for cello and piano.
More to say, up to Beethoven's times it would be a sonata for piano and cello
@@utvpoop if you actually did know something about this or was at least willing to search up wikipedia you would know that you are wrong
@@valtrberg901 Check IMSLP for the first editions. The first 2 cello sonatas, op. 5, were published in 1797 as "Deux grandes sonates pour le Clavecin ou Piano - Forte avec un Violoncelle obligé". Furthermore, the last 2 cello sonatas, op. 102 were published in 1816 as "Deux sonates pour le Pianoforté et Violoncell". Mendellsohn's Sonata no. 2 from 1843 is "Sonate für Pianoforte und Violoncello". I guess it was in the 1870's when they started to change the roles.
Bravo! So many do not seem to grasp that concept!

This is an important lesson for people who think Classical is just about musicians playing by rote.
He's a great listener
So is she, or she would not be playing with him.
@@sarahhearn-vonfoerster7401 both of them are, otherwise they wouldn't be playing with each other.
Not of his own intonation though
New found appreciation for a critical Brahms performance.
Most often, sonatas are titled “sonata for [x] and [y],” not “[x] sonata ([y] accompanying).”
Now this is beautiful talent, thank you sir
What a great maestro you are!!!! Great teacher 😊
Beautiful playing by both.
So subtle but so powerful
I love this man! He's always great!
Can anyone point me to the name of this piece please? It sounds beautiful
Brahms sonata no.1 for cello and piano. This is my favorite part of the whole sonata but it's all so beautiful...
@@gailukatch402 thank you so much!
I need a full song of this.. This is so relaxing.
the piece name is Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 38: II. Allegretto quasi menuetto
This is beautiful
These videos with music validates your teaching better than explanation alone. You should include playing examples at a higher rate.
When I was learning to accompany soloists, I was taught that two instruments are equal, i.e., they work together as equal partners. However, when accompanying a voice, you must let the singer take the lead because they are dealing with breathing issues that obviously, you, as the accompaniest, don’t have to worry about. ☺️
Is it just me or is his intonation pretty wobbly for a prestige conservatory teacher? (Not a cello player)
Yeah he misses quite a few notes.
Yep pretty raw
He’s 84 years old. Give him a break.
It's like that when U get older
I think that, for just this short, here, being in tune, it's not the main point. It's just a rehearsal, he doesn't need to concentrate on being in tune. My current cello teacher does the same sometimes.
Moreover, when you are a teacher you don't need to be the best concertist. you CAN be both, but it's not at all necessary. My classical guitar teacher played worse than me when I finished my music studies, yet he was the best teacher i ever had.
It's not an age problem, even if if you have hearing or muscular impairment it may be an issue of course.
Accompanists ❤. They never seem to get enough credit. As if they’re invisible to a singer. The singer couldn’t do their job without a beautiful piano player.
Anyone notice that her name is never mentioned?
Yeah 😢 like the whole premise of the video is for everyone to be present in the music-making
I just love music and specially string instruments. Im no expert and not very knowledgeable in instruments, but now I understand why nature would cease when Orpheus played❤
Wunderbar
Very nice, thank you.
Would love to hear the difference it makes with & without the left hand vibrato/shaking
That's amazing!
Some people here have no ear for nuance.
Nice point
My best friend in primary played the cello. Her dad the double bass and her mother the cello. I always thought it was cute, like a cartoon family.
Great Brahms!!!!!
He's definitely leading both times
He just didn't follow her lead at all.
Another way of thinking about it is that as much as she is accompanying him on piano, he is accompanying her on cello. It doesnt necessarily imply dominance or heirarchy in the importance of the instruments.
Look at that sheet music 😮😮😮
She is not an accompanist for this piece.
But, there are times when she is the accompanist because that is a gig that pays.
Correct.

Larry Lesser is one of the all time greats, and is 84 years old at the time of this recording. I’m praying I can still play this well when I’m 84.
Great accompanying . Has anyone else mentioned the horrible tuning?
They would have needed more rehearsal time. The accompanist was well within her right to bend the phrasing how she wanted for the repeat, but given that they have the melody in unison it takes a good deal of time playing together to really understand the other's tendencies, which they don't seem to have here. The ensemble faults don't lie entirely with one person--they both have responsibility!
Essa desprendimento dos instrumentos entre sí que é o verdadeiro rubato.
너무 좋아요.~~
Yes this is it
nothing wrong with being an accompanist. it takes skill to do well
They're just pointing out the difference.
As he just said, she is not an Accompanist....she is a partner.
It is a cello and piano composition, not cello with piano. Many pieces have one dominant instrument. This is for two equal instruments.
The roles can change throughout
@@fatitankeris6327 yes indeed but that's irrelevant to this conversation as this is a matter of what the role is.
@@ok-ro7kxIn this case it isnt an accompanist but rather a duet partner. To call them an accompanist is to belittle them and call their part "unimportant".
my first years soloing in highschool, i did this no problem. then the accompanist quit my last year and was replaced by a friend of the band director.
she could barely follow me and when it was her turn, got lost and completely stopped playing. we restarted and the only way i could get through it was to ignore her. worst performance of my life.
what piece is this?
Brahms e minor cello sonata second movement
Who else knew that key change would happen in the repeat of that passage? It's the most unpredictable thing to do, therefore the most predictable.
That is the brilliance of Brahms

It looks easy but it takes bandwidth
Beautifully done...very sensitive. Completely in sync.
That is why it is called chamber music. Supposedly the highest form. I only know I have a heck of a lot of fun.
But this is an exercise he is asking for and it is very interesting. (At Brahms time, piano and cello (or violin) were equal in the sonatas).
She does follow him... but he doesn't follow her at the repeat ^^
i feel like perhaps partially its bc his sound is more prominent in the recording. And yes... he is still quite dominant in the repeat session
Exactly. She’s clearly messing around with the rhythm and he’s… not really following
the cello is still the solo voice. Rather than having to differentiate the repeat from the original (on his own), the pianist plays their interpretation in the repeat. He does follow her, maybe not perfectly. Sorry to say, but you missed the point entirely.
@@matthewgellar1442 yes, but he’s not… playing her rhythm? And I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure the piece was written for both piano and cello to feature, at least at some point.
@@annie_kwokhe is though! (????) He's reacting to her tempo. I'm really not sure what to say to you.
The piano part in this section is soo awkward to play, props to this pianist 😅🎉

What are they playing? Does somebody know?
Brahms Cello Sonata in E minor, second movement

But the thing, you see, they're not improvising at all. You can see her reading off the music sheet! They know what these pieces sound like pre-hand, therefore taking the surprise element of being spontaneous out the equation of true inspiration.
what's the pianist's name?
Timing was incredibly musical, intonation was off.
that's some beautiful cello writing
Gives me Howls Moving Castle vibes.
He is still ahead of her at times during the second time. That second half is a big reason why cellist don't need to glom it on all the time. Let the piano shine on the melody sometimes. He plays gorgeously. Just sayin'.
Lead? Sounded like they were in sync all the time? :O
B-eautiful
It's like a phase shifted signal, lol
Name of the piece
brahms cello sonata in e minor, 2nd movement
What piece?
Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 38: II. Allegretto quasi menuetto
Er spielt viel zu zögerlich, konzentriert sich nicht auf seine Melodie, sie darf ihn begleiten. Alles sollte in Worten und im Spiel auf gegenseitige Achtung und Liebe basieren.
Interesting
Guy tried leading both times
No, he did not. Listen more carefully!
To all the idiots in the comments, it’s called interpretation! Music would be mechanical, lifeless and boring without it. It’s what brings to life and produces emotion from a piece of paper full of notes that mean nothing without a skilled interpreter.
He plays so confidently- but those notes were really sloppy pitch-wise.
Pitchy?
Why does her piano sound like all high notes
Accom"pianist"
Hava nagila
This was more like, I'm going to play what i want and she will follow and then I will keep playing the same thing and she can do whatever I guess.
they played the same notes both times; they’re playing from written sheet music, not improvising. the first time round he led the phrasing and the second time she led the phrasing.
They don't sound together either way
the piano part is written to have the tune slightly after the beat.
lindo
Im the leader of the blood pack
He is definitely not following her. You can feel the caution and hesitation from the pianist, she adapts perfectly to follow the cello. If you pay attention, when she is supposed to lead, he is literally ahead of her.
Does "leading" mean running a milisecond head of the other and slightly louder? I'm not a musiciian so I assume there is a much better definition than that.
He doesn't follow
She leads ? 😀
Intonations a bit off but I guess he’s just doing a demo
Nope. He's still leading.
