Ooooh I watch Tom's videos all the time, I would freak out if I was walking down the Plaza de la Democracia and saw him recording. Welcome to CR. Pura vida!!
From a Costa Rican, thanks so much for telling our history! Honestly, sometimes we ourselves don't know or study it! Just wanted to do a little nitpick, actually the State model between the 50s and 80s was the benefactor State in which a lot was State owned and ran. A lot of people see this part of our history as a sort of golden age, especially regarding education and culture. It was the 80s when the "Estado empresario" came to be and things started getting privatized. Other than that, thanks so much! Love from San José!
That was very interesting! I knew Costa Rica was very unique among Central American countries but I never quite understood the full picture until now. I recently learned about its biodiversity and it blew my mind. If I remember correctly it was the second- or third-most biodiverse country on earth, handily beating out countries 10x its size, like the US, China, and Russia. That's nuts. I read about some professors, I believe from Princeton, who took all the orange peels from an OJ factory, removed the citrus oils, and covered the earth where deforestation had occurred and in a matter of a few decades the jungle had grown back because of the nutrient-rich orange peel soil. I wish I could remember where I saw that. It was wild. I love nerd stuff.
What You do is Original That’s what makes it Great You’re an Original yourself , so just being You while doing some Great tour guide work makes it something better than the rest . ✌️ Xoxo 😘 👋
"The Banana Wars were a series of conflicts that consisted of military occupation, police action, and intervention by the United States in Central America and the Caribbean between the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the inception of the Good Neighbor Policy in 1934."
Tom, we all know drone shots are just video fluff and padding. We appreciate your “carne y patatas” approach filling each and every second with history, comedy, and seamless transitions.
They brought Chinese and Italian workers at first to build the railroad, but the tropical diseases killed too many of them. At the end, Jamaicans and other Afro-Caribbean built the railroad because they were immune to yellow fever. You acquire immunity if you are infected as a child, when it's a much milder disease.
Aren't you from Central America? I thought you said that in the Avenue of the Americas video. I watch for your pleasant attitude and "attempts at humor"!!!
