- 6 years old at the time.He was in Funairinaka-cho 1.2km from the hypocenter when the bomb was dropped. At the time he was a student at Kanzaki National Elementary School and was on his way to school in the morning when he was exposed to the flash of light. He lost his father, older sister and younger brother in the bombing. As a cartoonist, he published ‘Struck by Black Rain’ in 1968, and five years later gained great popularity for his series ‘Barefoot Gen’, based on his own experience and published in a popular youth magazine.
