  • What we do with a really mucky beehive.
    We sometimes come across a dysentery disaster - a very dirty dead stock of bees and we try to reduce the pathogen load on the beehive surfaces using a blowtorch.

    If it wasn't for the spotting you'd definitely say the colony had starved. It didn't look like there was much stores in the frames? Such a shame. It looked like a big colony.

      There were no stores at all but that may be due to them being robbed out after death - I don’t know.
      I suspect viruses (due to varroa) led to a breakdown in colony cohesion but I really don’t know for sure.

    Hello Trevor
    One of the saddest jobs we have to sort out ,after all the hard work we put into the colony .
    Great cleaning tips keep up the good work.

      It is a sad job Colin. Especially when it appeared to be a decent colony.
      Cases like this leave me puzzled. They should have been ok but something was seriously wrong.
      Some many questions without a definite answer.

      Thank you for your comment, it’s appreciated. I try to be as honest as possible and don’t want to make statements just to appear competent.
      There’s just so much of this job that leaves me baffled.

    Another great true-to-life video. We are going to have losses in winter it is part of the cycle of life. I use linseed oil it is easy to apply even with bees in the hive.

      I never thought of linseed oil but I like the idea.

      Just be sure to use raw not boiled linseed oil. As it contains chemicals.

      @@richardd8352Thanks Richard. Funnily enough I googled both raw and boiled. Apparently boiled dried out quicker but I didn’t know about the chemicals. Thanks again.

      It’s not great Lorna but as you’ll know only too well “where there’s livestock, there’s dead stock”.
      One of the saddest realities of farming!

    Good evening Trevor! Glad to see your video again. It is quite honest. But the manifestation of nosematosis and the death of the bee colony is already a consequence. The root cause is different. Would be a good bee family.
    In any case, we ourselves are to blame for wat happens to our bees.
    I wish you good health and a good season! Take care of yourself and your family! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🤝🤝🤝🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🐝🐝🐝✌✌✌

      Good to hear from you Ivan. I hope all is well with you.
      I often think that the bees produce a crop DESPITE what I do rather than BECAUSE of what I do.
      Better breeding of bee families may be the answer???

      @@swaleshoneyI didn't mean to offend you with my comment. And I didn't imply that you are a bad beekeeper. When something goes wrong in my apiary, I ask myself: who is to blame? And I give the answer:of course, the beekeeper is to blame. If you want to chat outside of TH-cam, I can send my email address to your company email address.
      Sincerely, Ivan Ukhnal!

      Hello Ivan, please don’t worry that you may have offended me - you haven’t.
      I think we are both realistic and understand that things don’t always go our way.

    I think that i lost a number of colonies this year because of the very wet conditions. Hives are open mesh floors so the colonies not strong enough to get the damp vapours out. So its colony size too small for the very wet ground surface.
    All new floors will be solid. Another change

    • @swaleshoney
      @swaleshoney  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Tony. I have perhaps 10 mesh floors, they have become popular lately but I don’t like them.
      I’m sure I read somewhere that they are less suitable for bees guarding against Asian hornets.
      Another change for you and many others perhaps.

    That many bees died from Starvation or poisoning. Sorry for your loss but thanks for your Educational Video.

    • @swaleshoney
      @swaleshoney  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment. I don’t think they were poisoned but my best guess is that varroa allowed viruses to gain a foothold and the colony succumbed.
      Did they have stores that were robbed after death? Did they not store enough due to lack of colony cohesion caused by viruses?
      I don’t know!

    Is that 11 frame equipment?

    • @swaleshoney
      @swaleshoney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it is but it’s not Langstroth. I run 10 frame Langstroths and 11 frame British Standard Smith hives.
      The frames in the video were all out of Smith hives.
