Bike the Gap of Dunloe

  • The Gap of Dunloe is stunning! Rent bikes in Killarney and ride for about 2 hours to the top of the Gap of Dunloe. A quick ride down the other side puts you at Lord Brandon's Cottage (20 minutes after the top of the Gap), where you can have a lunch and catch the boat back to town. This trip can be done in reverse as well.
If you are going to use a Jaunting Car (carriage), reservations aren't necessary as they are waiting at both sides of the Gap. Just arrange transportation to the Gap or take the boat to Lord Brandon's Cottage.

I rode it in 1973 and thought it was stunning -- perhaps not so many tourists then -- in fact I do not really remember meeting anyone else, except a a group of horses being driven through the gap, galloping down the road. I do not remember it as being so steep, and seem to think that parts of it were unpaved -- but I guess I was young then.

Beautiful cafe / store at the bottom of the hill too, with a lovely patio.

Good video. I disagree with Molly's comment below.

Yeah, I agree, the Ring of Kerry is a bit overrated... I'll take Killarney, Cork, Galway and of course the Cliffs of Moher over it...

Initially I enjoyed the start, however as it progressed I feel that it fulfills the stereotypical impression of 'American tourists'...."Why bother going to the ring of Kerry, etc. when Killarney has so much to offer....". How sad and relieving at the same time----your kind of tourism should be guided to the superficial American tourist map of comforts of home you can ONLY relate to. Highly likely you have experienced anything that is slightly beautiful or different from your comfort zone.

Well that's not a very well informed comment. Have you even seen any of my other videos? I obviously offended you by saying the Ring of Kerry isn't worth a full day, but that's just my opinion. The reason I didn't like the Ring of Kerry has nothing to do with needing the "comforts of home" or things I can relate to. It was just BORING! Perhaps I missed something?

My gosh Molly, lighten up. 'Superficial American Tourist Map of Comforts' - statements like that show you don't know Americans as well as you'd like to pretend you do, your logic itself doesn't even make any sense, GobalTreks was avoiding Ireland's number one most superficial comfort zone tourist draw - 'the ring of kerry' and choosing to do something much lest touristy, the Gap of Dunloe which is something instead that few tourists are even aware of. You should be instead giving him a cheers for his statement. If you ever come to America I'd welcome you and be happy to show you what true American hospitality is by ignoring your hostility and welcoming you to America and all the sights we have to show you and do it all with a smile.
