The phrase actually meant that she(ਆਸੋ) took gurdev along with her to the fields. 'ਉਂਗਲੀ ਲਾ ਕੇ' which is exactly written by the author himself in the story, is an old expression of ਉਂਗਲੀ ਫੜ ਕੇ that we use these days.
