    This was so much fun! As always, great pick. I'd disagree that Sondheim doesn't write hooks or hits, though -- "Send in the Clowns," "Not While I'm Around," "Being Alive," "Not a Day Goes By," "Pretty Women," "Sunday," "I Wish I Could Forget You," "Children Will Listen," and "Losing My Mind," etc. I've definitely walked away from his shows humming.
    I would agree that he's primarily trying to serve the scene and the character and that he's more cerebral overall.
    Last but not least I think Meryl's secret is twofold -- her incredible talent, but also her willingness to completely immerse herself in character and then do whatever the character requires. I loved how loose she was here, and yet still there was something tense and cynical about her. But then all the women were wonderful (and I always feel Baranski is so, so underrated). Cheers!

    • @carr0760
      @carr0760 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sondheim is considered to be the most difficult music both vocally and instrumentally in the business. That's what he means when he says he doesn't write hooks/hits. It's far beyond the skill level of the average performer, and tends to go over the heads of the average listener. Hence he's underappreciated by the masses.
      The nuances of Sondheim are only truly appreciated by an educated listener/performer, because you have to understand it to truly appreciate every bit of brilliance.

    • @paramitch
      @paramitch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@carr0760 Right. Which was my point, and which I hopefully communicated in my response.
      And as far as hooks, I still feel like it was a valid point. Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns" was a major radio/top 40 hit, and that was early in his career. So it's not like Sondheim can't write a hook. But we can agree to disagree. Cheers!

    I remember staying up very late to be able to watch it live and when this one came up, I got all excited!
    It fit the mood most of us were in as we're right in the middle of quaranteening, and these three seemed so relateable - in fluffy robes, drinking & letting their minds wander, getting all philosophical and contemplating life and the crazy things women do, yet never seem to find happiness...
    Thank you for your reaction to this, you voiced many thoughts I had whilst I watched it the first time and those three women were the perfect fit for this song and to get us out of our quarantine-funk!

    First, thanks so much for including something that was and wasn’t a Broadway musical performance because damn, it was fun to watch.
    Second, when it came to my TH-cam feed the day after the performance, I had that moment you mentioned just reading Meryl’s name. I stopped doing the dishes right then and there and pressed play.
    Finally, it’s amazing that even without the ‘hooks’ Sondheim still stays in my head. More than just underrated, I think he’s, sometimes, a genius as well as an actor’s composer. But, to get it right, you better be good. His unconventional melodic lines and rhythms are deceptively difficult. Again, thanks for a Friday dalliance!

    Patti LuPone's version is great and of course Elaine Stritch's version is iconic, but my personal favorite performance of this is Carol Burnett's in Putting it All Together. BUT Patti is great to look at for this song because you see the version she did for the 80th birthday concert, which was more humorous and sassy like this one, vs her performance in the actual stage production which is more dramatic. I'm sure you'll look at this, but this song by itself is often better done with a wink and a nod while in context it's a huge commentary on the loneliness of upper class women in the 70s and on how society's expectations of women cause loneliness in any era.
    AND I just want to say that Audra McDonald's vocals here are (as always) stunning. Just like Meryl puts so many little nuances in every moment of her acting, Audra puts so many little nuances into every moment of her singing.

  • @natebeynon

    The Stritch v. Elaine comparison would be fun. Elaine's iconic version sneaks up on you; the structure of the song is very simple and she starts very easy, smiling even, and actually very warm. And yet somehow she's gotten very bitter and angry by "copy of life/just to keep in touch" Her voice is warm and intimate and you feel she's dishing with you at a party full of pretentious bores. Patti, on the other hand, lets you know from note one she will be taking no prisoners, thank you very much, and barrels through the song like an angry freight train. There are very few who could manage to make that work, but she does.

  • @PamelaDae
    @PamelaDae 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So, when I've performed this song, I've had directors ask for it to be angry, some ask for it to be ironic, some just drunk. What subtext do you recommend?

    • @carr0760
      @carr0760 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. One I'm sure he'll delve into when he does his next analysis of a "proper" performance of this piece.
      Unfortunately, as the performer the answer is usually "whatever the director asks for" which means it could change every time!
      Personally, I think that both bitter and angry are secondary emotions presenting as defenses to the primary (hurt, scared, shame, etc), so I always try to find the primary...and that can be open to interpretation.

    • @MarcDanielPatrick
      @MarcDanielPatrick  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pamela, I will unwrap that question in the video coming this week. Its a good point you bring up, as every great performer needs to come to the rehearsal process with some choices made on their own how they're going to approach the role. Having this knowledge and prep work done is going to serve you and your director incredibly well when discussing the vision for the character.

    Well, I was surprised to see Meryl! I was looking around for Christine videos, and was startled to see both Meryl and Audra. Of course, Christine and Meryl did Mamma Mia together.

    You should definitely do a comparison of Lea Salonga and Eva Noblezada in the role of Kim. They’re both such stunning and talented singers and they both bring so much to the role. Eva was so young and gave such an emotional performance as Kim. (Really I’d just like to see you react to Eva tbh)

    Speaking of Sondheim... I don’t see a lot of love for A Little Night Music 🥲 could you react to a performance from that show possibly? GOD the music is enchanting, and the story so... I don’t know. Poignant in a lot of ways. It hits different now that I’m not 18 LOL.

    Honestly, and this may not be popular, but I like Barbara Walsh's version the best. It's very cynical at first and then almost tragic at the end. It's played very raw rather than beautiful. Definitely worthy of a reaction!

    Lots of fun! I can’t wait to see more on Stephen Sondheim. Of course I am familiar with some of his music, but much of it is new to me. Loved watching this Sondheim birthday/anniversary special when it came out. Also wanted to give you an idea for your channel, what I think is an excellent example of stressing good acting as much as a good vocal performance. I was captivated by Katrina Lenk on the Tony Awards, and then had the honor of seeing her live. Amazing. Here’s a link: th-cam.com/video/X9FvC5qEMBA/w-d-xo.html.

    Honestly, I think Sweeny Todd is my favorite musical, I grew up on Phantom and Les Mis but I don't enjoy listening to every single song in those shows, I have favorites and ones I don't mind but they do have ones I skip. With Sweeny I listen to the entire thing, I just enjoy it all and I can clearly hear how all the notes fit into one another or are connected and called back later in the show. I know Les Mis is the pinnacle of leif motifs (and everything else) but I just can't hear it very well.

      @@davesmith5470 Oh, I am so not educated enough to make that determination, that's just the sort of consensus I've heard over the years. I do know I love Hamilton and have had to willfully curb watching the show repeatedly every day since it came out on Disney+. I also have an easier time hearing the motif's and musical dialog in Hamilton than in Les Mis.

    • @EvaSofie

      She is a classically trained singer. She sings how her character sings in order for it to be realistic. In this case she’s supposed to be drunk so the voice of a drunk person wouldn’t be exactly perfect, however she does belt at the end. She just hasn’t shown what she is fully capable of but I bet she will in The Prom movie.
