First Impressions Of Sri Lanka (Like India?) 🇱🇰

- Foreigner flies with AirIndia from Chennai in India to Colombo in Sri Lanka and gets his first impressions. Right away I'm impressed by the Sri Lankan calmness and the serene surroundings even near the city. At first it is a bit unsettling but it's an experience I can get used to. While finding my way to the capital we meet friendly locals with whom we travel and eat.
As an Indian, it will be an insult to call Sri Lanka "like India".
Sri Lanka has their own history, own culture, own language, own people, own customs.
And Sri Lanka is much cleaner than India!!!! Long live Sri Lanka! Namo Buddhaya

Sri Lanka is a 100 times more CALMER and PEACEFUL version of India, it's actually a better India than mainland India. If peace of mind is what you want ... then Sri Lanka beats India in almost all metrics.

Don't call the Srilankans with Indian greetings or the simple words, they don't know about anything.. srilanka and India are two separate countries with totally different languages and cultures.. I can understand most of the words since I'm living abroad and I have interactions with Indians in Europe.. Enjoy!!

What I do is, call them in popular Russian greetings and say we feel the same when they call us in Indian languages.

Plenty others have pointed this out already but it'll help to know a bit of Sinhala and/or Tamil depending on where you travel to (while Sinhala is spoken by the majority, the Northern, Eastern and the Central regions have significant Tamil-speaking populations).
Knowing Hindi won't help you much, if at all.
But a good number of locals do know English, and it can help you get around esp in the more touristy places. Cheers!

Please keep in mind that Lanka is NOT India and try not to use the same phrases in Lanka. You don't go from Germany to France and expect the people in France to speak German or vice versa. Same thing here. Other than that, glad to have you here on this side. ❤
India doesnt have to be super modern or developed. It just needs to be as clean as sri lanka with civilised people to get good perception from people from around the world. Right now a lot of non indians hate India or look down on india because of lack of cleanliness and civic sense. Thats sad because india has beautiful cultures and so much diversity which would attract a lot of people from other countries.

Hello! Did you know that in India, Namaste is a common greeting? However, if you're in Sri Lanka, it's more appropriate to use the Sinhala version, Ayubowan but it is reserved for formal occasions. For casual encounters, simply saying Hello is perfect!
Use 'Machang' instead of bro.. Use 'Ayubowan' instead or Namaskar. use 'Hodai' , 'Patta' or 'Elakiri' instead of Achcha.

Ayubowan is how we greet in Sri Lanka, and vanakkam in the north. Nobody speaks hindi in Sri Lanka. Its mostly sinhalese and a bit of tamil

Dont forget the all the train rides. Use the railway map of Sri Lanka online. Train rides to Jaffna, Ella, Batticaloa are musts. Dont forget to stop in Anuradapura and Polonaruwa on the way to see the ancient ruins. You have the best beaches in East Coast in Arugam Bay and Pasikuda and Kumana National Park is nearby which is cheaper than Yala National park.

Dutch didnt colonized sri lanka, its only some costal areas, more than 90% of lanka was controled by king rajasinha 2 that time, he defeated dutch very badly
