As a young Marine stationed at MCAS in 1964-65 I spent many weekends sitting in the beer garden beneath the cherry trees along the banks of the Nishiki river. While it was touristy, it was of course much less developed and no fee required to walk across the bridge. I’m an old man now, but the memories of those lazy days are still fresh.
I know you're getting a lot of flak from people about these types of vids, but I hope you recognize they're a vocal minority. The ten thousand other people who watch these appreciate this style and your genuine enthusiasm. Thanks!
You are very fortunate to visit Beautiful Yamaguchi My Friend John, . My First Love in Japan is Yamaguchi . How can forget those beautiful memories while I was studying at my Much Loved ,Yamaguchi University . So many beautiful Places including Hagi ,Tsuwano ,Akioshidai cave and Plateau ,many many so much beautiful Places .
Hi... I’m Angel. A former teacher here in the Philippines. I’m beginning to watch some of your videos in which I truly love Japan wherein my sister lives there for a long time. I love your videos. As a matter of fact I already SUBSCRIBED to your channel. Just keep up the good works. CONGRATULATIONS... God bless.
Thank you so much for sharing this view of the real Japan. Tokyo and Sapporo are wonderful, but the small towns and their residents are the real treasures and they so deserve to be seen and appreciated. I can't imagine a better format. Even for those of us who have walked in the same places, it's as close as one could get to being there!
I love this video series, John!! I finally caught up LOL I love your usual Only in Japan series, but the live-streaming you have been doing brings such a different aspect, sort of like actually "casually" being there. I think most videos of Japan hype the bright hustle and bustle (I do understand the appeal) but you always manage to capture the more serene moments that feel more real, even to the original Only in Japan series, you bring attention to the aspects of Japan that get overlooked and stay true to the culture. Thank you for your hard work! Also I really hope you have been eating enough, seeing how tired you are walking and only getting to pass by the food stalls really worries me LOL
I was in a 50 days backpack trip in Japan in 1988. After spend a full day in Itsukushima, I arrived by train in Iwakumi before sunset. I had a magic time crossing Kintaikyo. The yellow glow light against the wood surfaces of bridge was outer wordly. And it was basically deserted because most tourists were gone. I plan to stay one night is a youth hostel on the west side of bridge. It was pretty much against the bottom of that hill where you showed the sunset. Back them, very quiet and pretty much only hoses locals were over there. I loved the ambiance of whole place so much that I stayed another night and made "base" for the next day's trip. I love those small Japanese towns.
My mom grew up in Iwakuni and I visited this bridge over 50 years ago for the first time. I remember my mom trying to explain to me the significance of the bridge and I walked over it several times. But of course since I was only a child, didn't really appreciate it.
I really like the detail of everyone using a blue sheet to sit on during hanami. It looks lovely that way. This place looks so peaceful and refreshing.
By the way, if anyone in the US is looking for a Cherry Blossom celebration, coming right up on April 8 is The Sakura Matsuri-Japanese Street Festival. Held every year in the Washington DC area, it's the largest one-day celebration of Japanese Culture in the US. www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/sakura-matsuri-japanese-street-festival/
The reflection on the river creates interesting photo. Being able to see moving people on it is cool. I enjoyed the beautiful Cherry blossoms close up. Seems peaceful without too many people there.
I love that area too - Hiroshima and Yamaguchi this this bridge ... the food and the hills not far away. That Chicken and massive 🍙 onigiri restaurant in about 20km away! #iwakuni
I pressed off this tab for a second while the video was playing, when I looked back he was showing the bridge and it almost took my breath away! (Sorry for being cheesy, by that is beautiful yo!)
Thank you for this video good job. I was there when I was 18 now 74 fond memories we would go to the bridge alot where you were standing by the cherry Blossom tree that was a beer garden nice place to relax
What a change....I was assigned at MCAS Iwakuni almost half a century back, been to that place anumber of times, have pics of the place & comparing it w/ how it looks now😮😮😮😮😮😮Still beautiful!
Visited this bridge while due to your video. Decided to look for this bridge and I had forgotten it was relatively close to Miyajima. Excellent stop and an incredible bridge. Continued by bus to Shin-Iwakuni to return to Osaka. Great times...miss it already. And it was only 5 weeks ago. Thank you for the tour off the country.
WOW that bridge is stunning! The Iwakuni sakura matsuri looks so well done! Love the Japanese style seating. The entire scene looks so relaxing. I think the sakuras are finally catching up to you. You look like you're really enjoying it. Btw, I am really impressed with how smooth the Osmo is, especially when you were crossing the bridge. Thanks for sharing with us...feels like we're there too!
This is so beautiful John. I was recently looking at some videos about Tokyo and stumbled upon your channel, I'm glad I did! Thank you for sharing this one. The view is just beautiful and breathtaking.
+Wai kuen Lee I will stop be tomorrow for a bit before leaving for the other side of Japan. It's just a special place, isn't it? After tomorrow, I hope to be back again sooner than later.

Greetings from San Diego! Travelling vicariously with you is so cool! Only problem is that my bucket list is growing with every video I watch. I've lived in Okinawa and Hokkaido, but hope to visit all the other main islands. Hugs and best wishes!
I'm really liking your live footage feeds. It's a nice preparation for my trip to Japan and gives me a good impression of what to expect. Keep up to good work and enjoy the trip.
It's places like this that make me want to move to Japan. I just hope I have enough time off of work to really enjoy it. I'm thinking no less than 5 years maybe.
I like how random things are.. ❤😍 thanks for giving us a little tour, John. That is indeed a beautiful bridge. The view is just splendid. Looking forward to more only in japan *go episodes. Lots of love from Cebu, Philippines
You are right . That bridge is awesome ! I would hv stumbled again n again on that bridge , no joke but I bet it's gonna be really fun . Oh, I am so jealous!!!
OMG ! I've been there back in 2010 where my Japanese friend and her family brought me around for a visit. It's about an hour or so drive from their grandparents house in a very quiet village surrounded by paddy fields and green house.
this is crazy, great video. its crazy because i like 20 minutes away from here. and yes you are correct, the sakura are out in full bloom a week later.
+Allison Carolan I hope so too! I'm sorry I am on the go so much, I just don't know when I'll be on but -- this was special :) see you next time Allison! -John
I did want to comment that I noticed how much more lively the markets were back then, and compared to now. The sellers were more vocal about selling their meals, while post-pandemic, it has been more subdued. Of course, it is natural that things are more subdued after what happened, but I do miss the lively, friendly interactions. I don't see much of that in your new videos. Although I do get surprised when I see someone walk by wearing a mask. In 2017.
So cool to see this again! I camped on the far side of the park two nights on my bike tour. The internet over there is so fast and free near the welcome center.
Loved this bridge, John. I crossed it in May this year. Reached the bridge at 6 pm the ticket counter have closed. But it was still bright and hot 32 Celsius.
As a young Marine stationed at MCAS in 1964-65 I spent many weekends sitting in the beer garden beneath the cherry trees along the banks of the Nishiki river. Visited this area several times in 1976 and 77! Loved it!

I was stationed in Iwakuni MCAS back in the 80's. Nice little city & very peaceful. Looks even more prettier than I remember.
I was stationed there also during that time. Favorite past time was the bridge, the park, the castle and the ginza.

Simply beautiful!! That's one of the reasons why I love Japan! I saw only 2% of Japan when I lived there. So much to see and experience there
