  • Breda, called pearl of the south,
must rely mainly on its appearance and history.
It is clearly a historic city with a rich history.
What many people don't know is that Breda is also a royal city, perhaps even more so than Apeldoorn, Soestdijk and The Hague.
Breda is the city of the Father of the Fatherland,
    William of Orange.
He grew up here and due to the death of his father, Willem van Oranje became Prince of Orange and large landowner at the age of 11.
His first wife Anna van Egmond and his eldest daughter Maria van Nassau are buried in the 'Grote Kerk' in Breda.
Initially, William of Orange would also be buried in the 'Grote Kerk' of Breda,
was it not that the city was in the hands of the hostile Spanish Empire at the time William of Orange was assassinated.
Out of necessity, Delft was therefore chosen.
The castle 'Bouvigne', originally called 'De Boeverie', was owned by the Princes of Orange for a long time.
Purchased by the son of William of Orange, Philip Willem.
In 1881 it became the property of the state and is now used by the Brabant Delta Water Board.
Ginneken is a district of Breda with a very old history that begins in Roman times and until 1942 was a separate village in the valley of the river 'De Mark'.
Around 1900 Ginneken was a tourist place next to the 'Mastbos' and castle 'Bouvigne' where many guest houses and hotels were found.
The central part of Ginneken is a protected cityscape.
Breda has an attractive historic center with many vistas, squares, narrow streets and courtyards.
The Walloon Church from 1440 and adjacent to the Begijnhof.
The Begijnhof is one of Breda's tourist attractions and by far the most beautiful Begijnhof in the Netherlands.
Beguines were single women and widows, often of nobility, who lived alone or in small groups from the 12th century onwards.
Their life was religiously arranged but had more personal freedoms than life in the monastic orders.
Beguinages were always walled in and closed off from the outside world between sunset and sunrise.
In the courtyard there is a herb garden, a number of water pumps and a small church.
The original medieval Begijnhof stood next to the current Kasteelplein and had to make way in 1535 because the castle was expanded into a Renaissance palace.
In the Middle Ages, thousands of Beguines were spread all over Western Europe, from Scandinavia to Spain.
The Beguinage of Breda is a special one, all the more so because it was under the personal protection of the Van Oranje-Nassau family.
That Breda has a rich history can be seen in the many large beautiful old houses that can be found in the city.
The castle of Breda, you can't ignore it.
Prominent presence in the center of the city.
For a long time the palace of the Van Oranje-Nassau family and since 1826 made available to the Royal Military Academy.
It is generally not open to the public.
In the Queen Wilhelmina Pavilion you can see exhibitions about the history of the KMA.
It would be a credit to the municipality of Breda and the KMA if new opportunities were created to visit the castle.
The castle has a special place in our national history.
As far as I am concerned, this is a missed opportunity for the city of Breda.
Breda is a Burgundian city with many catering establishments.
The Grote Kerk where some of our King's ancestors are buried is definitely worth a visit.
Normally open daily but unfortunately on the day of this recording the church was closed for film recordings.
The center of Breda is ideal for an afternoon of shopping.
The Sint Antonius cathedral of the Diocese of Breda is the only Catholic church in the old center.
Also visit the Stedelijk Museum of Breda and learn all about the history of the city.

Ik ben er al 40 jaar weg. Ik heb er gewoont in de Veldmoeren en in een Appartement in de Antwerpenstraat. Nu woon ik in Marktheidenfeld (Duitsland).
