Happy New Year, Ronin. I really enjoyed this video and hope you do more like it. As for Scorsese, I’ve enjoyed a lot of his 70s and 80s work before becoming less interested when Goodfellas arrived. I’d never heard of After Hours when Criterion put it out and took a punt on the 4K. What a wonderful film! It’s now one of my favourites of his - it has so much rewatch value. All the best.
@MsModestyBlaise thanks modesty. Hope you have a productive 2025 espionaging. After hours is a personal favourite. I did mistakenly say bauhaus shot raging bull, too, but that was Michael Chapman, of course. Hopefully marty doesn't sue me.
Fantastic video Ronin, really interesting to hear your thoughts on Scorcese and his films. I thought I might have been the only one to think he's quite overrated as a director! I'm a pretty big fan of his in general, and as you mention, what he's done for film history and preservation is absolutely spectacular, and the number of incredible films that he's promoted and given a fresh lease of life to, is incredibly impressive. I certainly love listening to him talk about films and his love for cinema, but his films for me have never really hit home very much. I only saw Taxi Driver in the last few years, and it was a surprise for me how much I loved it, (definitely my favourite of his I'd say), but other of his widely loved works have never connected with me all that much. I also couldn't make it through The Irishman, and that is a shocking rarity for me. I do rememer loving Hugo though and I did pick up the Arrow 4K last year, which I look forward to re-visiting at some point this year.
@goosesmovies thanks goose. I think for we who have a better world cinematic view , scorsese isn't as high on the list as those who stay in the mainstream. Definitely can listen to him all day. Happy new year sir and we can have a think about a chat topic, if you're still interested.
Great vid. Really good to hear your thoughts on the different films. Scorsese is clearly a saint for his services to cinema and that is by far his greatest legacy, but it seems he burned through his own collected bag of filmmaking tricks many years/decades ago. That said, I was surprised and impressed by Wolf of Wall Street. I still love Mean Streets and Taxi Driver but agree Raging Bull has diminished. I still haven't seen the one with dresses. I couldn't make it through Ambulance Driver. What's the one where the cop plays a bad guy and the bad guy plays a cop (pretty original idea, eh?) and people stare intensely and shout angrily??? It won the top best ever award at the OSCARS so it must be the best 🤣
cheers- i stopped at Gangs of New York...DiCaprio is on the naughty list. Always deemed him more of a pop-hollyweird director, but the fact he got his Oscar this late in age speaks for him somewhat...
I suppose I will always classify Scorsese as a great director, even though I haven't seen many of his films and I haven't liked everything I've seen. I love Who's That Knocking At My Door?, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, New York, New York, After Hours and Shutter Island. I like Mean Streets, Goodfellas and The Aviator. I recently rewatched The King of Comedy after many years and I think it's brilliant. I haven't seen Taxi Drive in a long time, and I might rewatch it soon. I only made it through about 30 minutes of The Departed and turned it off. I detest The Wolf of Wall Street, The Color of Money and The Gangs of New York more than I could ever possibly tell you. I regard Raging Bull as a brilliant film, but I don't want to see it again. I have little interest in his recent films and probably will never see them. I was a little surprised that you hated The Departed THAT much!!
@@grey1951 thanks Mike. Sorry for the rant. I’m baffled by people thinking the departed is great. It’s bad filmmaking plus the cgi blood and the botching of the great moments from the Hong Kong version. Oh and the rat at the end just in case the audience didn’t understand. Scorsese is supposed to be better than that. I’m not really interested in three hours of the wolf of Wall Street to be honest. Happy new year sir and all the best for 2025.
@@leocoh89 I forgot to mention that I also like his remake of Cape Fear, which totally surprised me. I avoided it for years, because I really liked the original and considered a remake almost sacrilegious. Someone gave me a DVD copy, so I gave it a watch. Very well acted and not nearly as bloody as I had expected. I guess I've seen more Scorsese movies than I realized.
Loved the wonderful Teri Garr in the the 70s and 80s! Obviously "Close Encounters"and even a little film where she again teamed up with the great Richard Dreyfuss called "Let it Ride" Critics hate it, I love it! She will be missed!
Is this video a plea for someone to buy you The Departed? I don't think my view is that different from yours although I like Casino and Raging Bull more than you (even if I think they have flaws) and am not so high on After Hours. Trying to go on after Gangs Of New York is tough. I would argue Schrader did more with less than Scorsese, despite some career lows.
His Rolling Stones Concert dull . One guy rated New York New York as his worst though. Departed is based on the Connor Cormac I think the word is self parody of anothers work . But is it so bad it's good ? Wallowing in it's lurid cliches is the fan base,The worst against his best which is higher? I rated Cape Fear higher than Taxi Driver because it's just more intensely hackneyed exploitative and crass ect offensive stupid. I cannot rate him in the highest now iconic fatigued etc.Is his bad ones bad half his true revised value sort of below Cape Fear ? For me it's too easy to be Iconic fatigued. But Taxi is often a list beater.
