As a Chinese, i can confirm the melon story. We all grew up seeing our grandparents pick their melons, whether its melon or watermelon, we slap it to hear the sound of the impact. I can't quite describe the sound, but mostly we are looking for the melon/watermelon that has the crispiest BONG sound rather than the flat BAH sound if that make any sense.
My mom actually explained the Melon Trick. And it works with Watermelons too. If you slap it and the sound echoes, it's ripe. If the noise is dull it's not.
The thing the old lady did with the cantaloupe is a real tactic people use for buying good fruit. You can tell if a melon is juicy by slapping it and listening to the sound. If the sound is sharp, then it's in a good condition, if it doesn't make a sharp sound, it isn't in optimal quality.
