    I just realized something. I listened to this song a while ago, and just kind of brushed it off. I didn't really understand it. And lately I've been dealing with many negative thoughts about my future, and all the things that could happen. It's gotten to the point that I wondered if my mind would ever become a happy place again. While I was listening to Spotify, this song came on after my playlist ended. I absolutely loved it. It made me feel understood, after such a long time being alone in my thoughts. For the first time, in a long time, I feel at peace, in my head. The only way I can try to explain is that it gave me the feeling I could pace myself in life, and that theres always that second chance, where first I thought there was none. James is a brilliant artist. For me the car beside me that moves ahead, are opportunities, or people, who already have their lives set up, and layed out in front of them. But we are all heading in the same direction, and some just go faster. This song makes me feel its okay to take my time. Thank you James.

    This is a bit personal but it really makes me appreciate the song. I suffer from panic attacks when I'm stressed out, which are often paired with Alice in Wonderland syndrome, a type of seizure that messes with how your brain processes information. For me, it makes noises sound incredibly loud and like they're going too fast - I've never really had a tangible way to describe it, and it used to freak the hell out of me. It's at its worst if I smoke while stressed out and then it sounds like voices are stuttering.
    This track completely emulates how I feel when I'm in that state. It's hit me like a brick when I first heard it for that reason. I don't know if it was James's goal to evoke a panic attack or anything like that, but for me, this is a gorgeous artistic representation of anxiety and how it can make you feel like everything is distant but also way too much to handle. I can totally see why people wouldn't like this kind of thing, but it's exactly why we need abstract art - to explain abstract thoughts.
    Also, the production is fantastic, and the more I listen the more intricate the vocal chopping feels. Sorry for getting way too deep there! I just have a lot of feelings on this haha

    I've been listening to this song so much that I actually came up with a meaning. The car beside you is your partner. Sometimes they move ahead without you, and if that happens, the only thing you can do is to move ahead, to keep going, you don't go backwards. It's also literal, in a way. About the need to clear our heads, sometimes you need to take a drive and think about stuff to came to conclusions you needed to make. The song repeats the same verses over and over, but they sound sketchy, confusing, except for the final part, on where the verse is delivered slowly and clear. Your mind it's clear, for a brief moment.
    James is a motherfucking genius.

    • @danielisokay
      @danielisokay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it's more referring to any general person we encounter in our lives. Sometimes we feel like others are moving ahead of us and that we're falling behind. We're all moving forward because of the nature of time and existence, so it doesn't matter. No sense in trying to make conclusions in our head with the chemicals we consume, we will never know. We're not going backwards. I think the vocals are reminiscent of drug/trip experiences and the delay alludes to the delay we feel like we experience in life.

    This is stunning af and I need this album and I need these 2k18 tour dates. I can see this track as a sort of modern throwback to songs like CMYK he did back in the day. You can hear his signature style but always changing it up and elevating it. This is not saying he’s being repetitive to his og stuff but that he’s just perfecting his craft and maybe revisiting it. James Blake knows how to do the damn thang and does this shit well. I saw him in Chicago and cried .. his performance was so lovely

    I love this because it's a metaphor (I think) for feeling left behind when others appear to be doing well. But it's also a vivid visual illusion that's disconcerting in its own right. I hate sitting in a parked car when the car next to me starts moving. Gives me a real scare thinking my car is sliding backwards.
