Ok, I am going to address the "over-designed" argument for Black/White Kyurem. It should be over-designed.
The whole point of the pokémon is that it is an unholy fusion between two incomplete parts. In the lore, Zekrom, Reshiram, and Kyurem were one. But one-day Zekrom and Reshiram broke from the whole and went their separate ways, leaving Kyurem, who was the unifying element between the other dragons, as an empty shell.
One day, Team Plasma formulated a way to fuse Kyurem into its original form using what amounts to mad science. However, depending on the game version you play, only Zekrom or Reshiram are fused with Kyurem. This explains why it looks so over-complicated and uneven, it is a Frankenstein of a monster kept whole by mad science while missing the other half it requires to be complete.
So yes, it should be overdesigned and uneven, it is essential for the whole concept to work.

I sort of agree with this but I also do think that Black and White Kyurem just aren't great designs overall, or rather they're not intuitive designs, which is probably the real reason why people tend to say they're over designed as a factor. In reality their design stems from Zekrom, Reshiram and Kyurem themselves being relatively over-designed for a Pokemon game, especially if you compare them to say Lugia or Mewtwo, for better or worse. As you said, Zekrom, Reshiram and Kyurem are supposed to represent Ideal/Yin, Truth/Yang and The Absence of Both/Wuji respectively, but their design doesn't really clearly represent that which they ought to represent despite being very busy relative to even other legendary Pokemon at the time. Zekrom is black representing Yin sure, and the generator in its tail I guess represents one part of the YinYang circle turning, the electric typing represents one aspect of the spark of life. Reshiram is white representing Yang, has a tail generator too, the fire typing representing another aspect of the spark of life. Kyurem is grey, representing something in between yet not, and the ice typing hints at absolute 0 which is a close analog to nothingness, and I guess it's hunched over to represent that it has no or less worth without one or the other. But you don't really feel those designs emotionally or think it intuitively, you mostly reason to them through analysis which is not the kind of design you're looking for when you're trying to create living breathing creatures with natural backgrounds and origins in mind. In reality, I think that it's hard/man defined yet etheral concepts such as Yin and Yang that makes those kinds of designs tough to really design for in the context of Pokemon that is (or was) at first about representing the wildlife and wonder Satoshi Tajiri used to find outside of the urban areas. If you look at Lugia, you don't need to know much about anything to really understand what they are all about, it makes intuitive sense in the context of Pokemon that it has large paddle hands and fins on its back once you understand that it's a bird guardian of the sea that has to both swim and fly, it just fits. It's harder to intuitively feel where Zekrom, Reshiram and Kyurem fits in the Pokemon world, where they preside, what their function are etc., I admit part of that is just that they're mythical and therefore have an air of mystery around them, but I also feel a huge part of it is that they're concepts first and foremost, and then to a lesser degree living breathing creatures.

      @oyeh8908 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

@@alexquah784 How are Reshiram and Zekrom suffering? Their fusion is way more natural than Necrozma's since they were one in the beginning, and according to the Pokedex in SwSh Kyurem now carries on the mission of the dragon it absorbed.

When I was took art in high school I really was hoping I could make different creature and monster design, cause that was one of my favorite things, still is. And I waited the whole year for the character design segment to come up, with boring topics like still life’s and self portraits, I would get bored and draw monsters instead. And even put all my effort into them, but when my teacher saw them she just told me not to do that and to wait for the character design unit. When it finally came around I was super exited, and put everything I had into my character, overdone as hell and as far as I could tell, it was my masterpiece. And yet when I brought it in to present it, while I could tell all my classmates where impressed, my teacher got super mad because I didn’t follow her instructions, and made something I wanted to. I ended up failing that class because of it and stopped taking art because i stopped caring. It made me realize this much a bad teacher can mess something up that somebody loves. I really am happy that there are people out there that encourage creative and over the top creature design however, so thanks man, you made a really great video

kyurem was overdesigned, but it was done so perfectly for what it actually is.
its a gigantic ice dragon pretty much only known from myths and legends that flash freezes everything it even comes close to. Nobody's supposed to know what it looks like and that's why the design is so full, to show what a chaotic, dangerous being it is, and I think they did that well. Its not symmetrical because its not supposed to be, and I think that the sheer contrast they did with kyurem vs reshiram/zekrom is great.

I think it‘s ok to overdesign a character or a creature as long as every part of it still fits into the theme or concept of it (for example by using similar shapes, colors or textures for different parts), like for example shara ishvalda, who resembles a flower or a tree, with the Wings being the roots, the face and neck with the weird leaf-scale-things being a fruit or a flower and the body and tail being the wood. In other words, you can cramp as much information into your design as you want, as long as the information is similar.

I feel like the same principle of "This particular aspect being done this way isn't necessarily good or bad and depends on context" is something that applies in general in regards to artistic media, whether that be books, paintings, movies, games, etc. All too often I see critics either casual or professional negatively criticize aspects of a work that don't really seem particularly off to me, almost as though they are simply trying to sound smart by showing off their verbose vocabulary. It comes off as rather unfair to me, because criticism should never be about making yourself look good. It should be a fair assessment of the subject matter of the critique to the best of your ability.

I guess the first thing you should consider, when thinking on how to "over-design" is what emotion that thing should invoke.
If you want to make the viewer feel safe and give the imagery of weakness, go for a simpler design with large individual shapes.
Just look at Caterpie. Large simple shapes and not really much to look at. You can look at it once and you know that you are dealing with a pushover.
While if you want to instill the idea of a walking god that will destroy the world, you might want to go for a more intricate design. There is a reason why people joke that an RPG final boss must be a cluster f" of shapes. Take a look at Obelisk the Tormentor from Yugioh. A large muscular creature in shades of blue that looks more like a living armor or weapon than a monster.
The best contrast for this can, in my opinion be shown in Pokemon. Especially the pseudo-legendaries. Look at the Salamance line. Bagon is a small thing that seem to be only a large head and a small body. It looks like a baby. Shelgon is already a bit bigger. Not threatening but the small black hole where the face is, gives you a feeling of that this will become a problem if it ever were to crack its shell. And Salamence is a dragon with a small head, powerful body and an emphasys on its large lean wings. He has way sharper shapes than its pre-evolutions and by just looking at it once, you get the feeling like this thing is going to fly fast and burn your house down.

While extremely busy designs are something that, nine times out of ten, I personally can't stand, I appreciate that the video is addressing them as a legitimately aesthetic for people who are into it. I've met numerous people who are all *about* finding new details in character designs just from still images, and they're not wrong to enjoy it. I like that there's a legitimacy to it, even if it's an aesthetic I try to stay as far from as possible.

I know you showed off some bloodborne bosses as an example of an Over-Designed creature, but another good example would be Gasha-Dokuro from Nioh. They took a giant skeleton from Japanese myth and made it a Kaiju made out of millions of skeletons, and crystals. And I STILL love it!

A bit of backstory for the yugioh stuff:
4:58 nearly all of the over designed monster are boss monsters, aka monsters that you spend resources on that have effects to help you win the duel and usually fit with the theme of the archetype. It's the main goal of most decks to make these monsters, so they're designs better be worth it
5:47 white stone is a good searcher of blue eyes white dragon while also being a tuner for synchro summons, while blue eyes shining dragon requires you to tribute blue eyes ultimate (the original, yes they made 2 more ultimate fusions of 3 blue eyes) which by modern times is very bad and not a good use of resources. Due to blue eyes popularity it has gotten a lot of good support cards that make white stone far less useful, but still usable unlike shining
6:03 ironically enough that's actually one of the better galaxy eyes xyz monsters depending on the situation, gotta love that over designed beast
6:20 rokket is called vullet in japanese, but I guess that was a little too on the nose. Also I've seen the vrains dub in canada so uh, weird if it's not in the us
7:11 borreload, borrel, and topologic (5:26) are all boss monster archetypes used by revolver that are quite over designed, but so good. Just look at all the topologic monsters if you ever wanna see over design
Is yugioh why I like over designed things? Most likely.

I am not an artist at all, however I will say I appreciate good art design and I think a good example of well done overdesigned art would be some of the art of the gods from puzzle and dragons. They have super over the top designs that really excentuate the wildness of the characters they are portraying and have the same evolution feel as pokemon as they move through their ranks.

This is fascinating to me because I’ve never been able to fathom having complex character design. I can never add too much detail without it feeling pointless. Even when trying to add detail that makes sense I can’t execute it in a way that makes it feel right. Part of it is just me needing to improve my overall drawing ability but my character design needs work as wel

Everyone's talking about JRPG bosses, but I think another good example of over designed stuff is in Resident Evil. When you have a monster that's a big blob of flesh and organic matter, it's easy to imagine it being kinda boring looking- Just like a big blob. But RE manages to design a bunch of gross organic formless mutants that are visually distinct from one another, and have interesting aspects and components. And that feeling of "what the fuck am I even *looking* at" is great to throw you off guard, since your brain is distracted trying to make sense of the weird monster that's killing you

tbh, I feel like there's a similar strain to how I've interpreted "Over-designed", but I've broken it down into three different categories:
Busy: when there's just a ton of bits all over it, belts, edges, bolts, torn clothing, patches... just as my favourite criticism of Darksiders put it "it's like someone started drawing them, and simply forgot how to stop" (Though he was towards the last category, in my opinion). The design is just excruciatingly detailed without any noticeable reason or purpose other than to appear complicated.
Detailed: every part means something. the words on their sword, the scripture on their belt, the scars and impacts on their armour, chips and knicks, dirt and grime, trophies and tokens that all form an aspect of the character. The character doesn't even necessarily have to look "over-designed" if this is done extremely frugally.
Imposing: Making the character difficult to comprehend, foreign, something that's not easy to immediately grasp the form of. The more moving bits, the more surprising glowy or dangly bits, the more sharp edges and unnatural lines, the more the design starts to invoke a very visceral fear reaction from the viewer. circles and squares aren't scary, but a ball with a bunch of strangely sharp angles in it, or a square draped in a torn soft material both look unnerving

But when he was describing the use of color in Yu Gi Oh cards something suddenly clicked. The softer color had a purpose. The processes of teaching and learning thrive in supportive environments and the color plays a role in setting intention. Wonderful video and I am happy to check out more.

  • @artlocked5840

A reason why I love Fakémon ideas more than official Pokémon's is that, if you have one simple concept to give a reason to over-design: It's *YOUR* concept, go ham at it. I feel like the more ideas introduced to a subject and how they synergize / work all together to one mere end goal/story telling, the better. I for example LOVE Bayonetta's monsters's designs, or Yaldabaoth's design at Persona 5.
There's so much more that the franchise can do, and can be, like how they did with Hoenn-Sinnoh-Unova designs that I felt nostalgic with Ultra Beasts and Eternatus once again. But as you said, they're probably simplifying just for the sake of plushies. lol

If you love schlocky, overdesigned cards, I highly recommend checking out some Cardfight Vanguard artworks. Even their names are overdesigned. As soon as I saw "over-designing" I knew I had to watch this video, since it's actually something I struggle with. Most of the time I'm creating a new character I just want to add more and more and it ends up way too busy and complex at the end. Had a big problem with colors too, where I would use basically whatever I felt like and that also made it so the characters ended up not too appealing, though thankfully I've been getting better at that and learning to tone down my erratic color usage. But this video was a huge help, I'll definitely need to start creating some monsters or bosses and let my heart and mind go absolutely wild

One of my favorite examples of overdesign used well is KDM, or Kingdom Death Monster, where even the most simple designs often have a bunch of tiny little weird details and most of the monsters are a confusing mess of disembodied hands and faces. This not only gets across the terrifying and inscrutable nature of the setting but also allows for a variety of things to cut off and attacks for the monsters to do in game. And ends up with some really cool looking minis too lol

there is a difference between overly designed and overly detailed, overly designed just means that it has too many design decisions that don't make sense to put in.
overly detailed can easily be explained as filigree on armor, at some point it stops looking good and just starts looking like they went too overboard where it's just noise.
but overall both things is all about the impression it gives off or how well it reads.
