I normally can't stand user made music videos to songs on youtube but this is fantastic. Simple, subtle and perfectly captures the essence of the song in my mind. I love it!
The video is so simple and smooth. And yet, so adequate and pungent, like the song. I discovered this song this weekend and I might have heard it dozens of time, for its simple honesty. It is conforting to find beauty in such sadness.
In my personal opinion the best version of this brilliant song so far. The video in it's simple way is very right for the song and the music. A friend for whom english is not a first language asked me to explain the line "my best unbeaten brother" he and I understand the words well but not the line. Anyone want to help ? Thanks.
Has long been part of my own sober, drug free songs, but also understand why the poster did this, we all have some light to share to those in need,to often we,they never ask until it is to late "Peace Takes Practice" Rick REACHING OUT When reaching out you soon find yourself searching farther down or seeking that once glossy crown Why start second guessing something that was clearly missed, waiting patiently for that puzzle train to come by again Finding inner power often not needed until we are lower, open question can we survive any suffering alone If needing a guiding light when the streets are not quite so bright, will we know to seek help at the helm To often stuck never noticing the rut, harder to recognize from the inside if we're in that zone Glass half full but floating in an open pool being drawn out by the tide ,quickly time passes almost overwhelm Goodbye mister bluebird voices floating in the air, come again when the day is fair, your voice helping me to regain my own tone Clouds quickly breaking, bright beams flowing in everywhere, reaching out to others do we dare, will they be the quickest to condemn So many fallen before, life moves so fast, too quickly become her *****,certain events we can no longer postpone Clouds quickly breaking bright beams flowing in everywhere, reaching out to others do we dare, most of life is gone before we know it, so much of the world that is never seen Left alone Like a sapling bending in the wind R.C
Tonight I heard the sad news of the death by suicide of the sister of my dear friend and colleague. This song fits the mood of sombre sadness I feel for the loss of a young daughter, wife, mother, friend. I pray she is at peace.
i was looking over the stern of a ferry, watching the water being churned up by the motor while it was idling in the dock. then i tilted up to the horizon (catching a seagull). i recorded the footage using one of the in-camera "special effects" -- so the negative and positive are reversed. i might have also screwed around with the white balance, i'm not sure. the footage was slowed down to match the tempo of the song.
Best descriptor of depression both lyrically and musically that I'ver heard; so much that it makes it uplifting and positive... you've done your job. Great musician and composer.
meesoolee . . . I am so sorry your friend took his own life . . . I have wrestled with depression my whole life . . . my earliest memories are of wanting to be dead . . . I came very close to taking my own life when I was 16 . . . but I became a Christian instead . . . saved my life in every way. I am not a practicing Christian anymore . . . I suppose the foundation is still there . . . but not practicing. I wish your friend could have known that things do get better . . . peace
Wow. After reading it's dedicated to someone who's committed suicide, I'm crying. This song is the desperation of someone like that, on the edge, calling out for attention but either too scared or too stubborn to ask. Who loves parts of life but the depression just consumes them. And then the people around them wonder, "should I have known? Could I have stopped it?"
one of my favourite songs on earth...it song proves everyone is human, it almost makes me cry a bit, haha. thanks for the video, i know your friend appreciates it.
Wow, this is an amazing video. The video and music is in perfect harmony. Made the song even better. This shouldve been the official I See a Darkness music video.
incredibly beautiful it's so creative and symbolic i'm glad you could take something so upsetting and channel into something beautiful. i admire your strength and your talent, and i'm very sorry you had to go through what you did. the same almost happened to me too. and i can't imagine what it would have been like if it had happened. so i truly do mean that i'm sorry.
@stefanieacord He wouldn't want you to punish yourself, stefanie. The best you can do is try to learn from this, to honor the connections you have with friends and family. It takes many incarnations to learn these lessons. Life is hard. Mistakes are what life is made of; because life is precious, and something so precious is always breaking. But this moment is still precious, and everyone in your life loves you.
@mjlorange1 The thought of light is a light. The prayer for grace is a grace. Does it matter if there's anyone listening? "Be your god" is fine. But you can also create your own god. And root it in what is most real. This moment. All that is given to you. The loves, the friendships, the mystery of shared experiences. Slow mornings after parties, recollecting your place in the grand real. All of that is God. Who are we to say that it isn't? We are here, if anything, to say that it is.
@stefanieacord stefanie, there was nothing you could have done. truly. do not feel guilty. none of this is your fault. and you have to accept that before you even start to move on... and you will move on...and you will make it!
Beautiful!! Bonnie Prince Billy is' another name from Will Oldham!! So its original I guess .... -btw, does anybody know, who's singing on Acid - Paulis version, which is very close to the Northern Lite -version??? Or does anybody know a version with female vocals???
UUUUAAAHHHH, can't stop listening to this song, since I got to introduced to it thru Acid-Pauli - version! Its really beautiful, too. But since I heard this I'm listening several times every day!! Maybe its just because -won't tell-, but...-no, its the song!!
@WwotEvarr :D no, I,am talking seriosly, when first time i heart this song , sink its kurt./ maybe you right, / but whay when bonnie prince sings this in LIVE, voice is diferrent, not the same!?
It is human mans perception, that I have been sneaking up on him... so let he that runs continue to run, and he that receives me continue to receive... to them who see me coming, I am a terror and a hope. To the one who is at works of mind and heart, from this one do I steal back what is mine, and leave the human flesh abandoned as a swaddling cloth. My garment is as the sun upon water.
Chuck Norris listens to this song and realizes who he is a little more than before he heard it. He can also kill people before they are born. So at least he has that going for him.
we love will oldham, we did a cover, let us know what you think? watch?v=GfmZ7vbJFfU or over on sandalwood.ie. trying to choose what song to do next - any suggestions? :-)
Will is and will always be one of the few to give us comfort in such moments witjout denying the sadness of it all.
it´s so wonderful....... best performance ever

Great song. It was a favorite of my best friend. He passed away recently and I basically have this song in my head every day.
Rip for your friend.
Beatiful song, describes depression in a nice way..
In my personal opinion the best version of this brilliant song so far.

REACHING OUT
When reaching out you soon find yourself searching farther down or seeking that once glossy crown
Why start second guessing something that was clearly missed, waiting patiently for that puzzle train to come by again
Finding inner power often not needed until we are lower, open question can we survive any suffering alone
If needing a guiding light when the streets are not quite so bright, will we know to seek help at the helm
To often stuck never noticing the rut, harder to recognize from the inside if we're in that zone
Glass half full but floating in an open pool being drawn out by the tide ,quickly time passes almost overwhelm
Goodbye mister bluebird voices floating in the air, come again when the day is fair, your voice helping me to regain my own tone
Clouds quickly breaking, bright beams flowing in everywhere, reaching out to others do we dare, will they be the quickest to condemn
So many fallen before, life moves so fast, too quickly become her *****,certain events we can no longer postpone
Clouds quickly breaking bright beams flowing in everywhere, reaching out to others do we dare, most of life is gone before we know it, so much of the world that is never seen
Left alone Like a sapling bending in the wind R.C
At 2:01, a bird flies across the top of the screen, past the blood tainted looking water. Quite nice.
I love this version. Johnny Cash is legendary but you can't beat this in my opinion :)
The words and emotions are just overcoming.

Excellent, brave work.
I saw bpb in Western MA with my gf a few short weeks before she died - this song will always eat me up
Best descriptor of depression and associated rubbish I've experienced; a non-poetic response to a poetic and musical masterpiece
Hope, as the distant surface from the view at the bottom, can be staggeringly sad.

In the darkness shines the brightest light.
Chuck Norris - 09/1876
looks a lot like blood in a bathtub at first, except then i realised that that much blood would have made the water too cloudy to see
@IDanClarkI Simon Neil actually did cover it in America when he played a solo show due to the other two not being able to make it.
have you ever noticed... The kind of thoughts I Got.
