This short educational film from 1972 titled “Just Like a Car” features clips of youth-aged cyclists riding around their suburban town woven with historical b-roll footage to detail the evolution of bicycles and the importance of adhering to traffic and safety regulations while riding them. The film was made by Film Loops, Inc. and features a catchy jingle written and produced by Robert (Bob) Brush. Brush is an American writer-producer and composer, best known for his work as executive producer, writer and showrunner of ABC's "The Wonder Years". Some of the kids bikes shown include classic Schwinn's with banana seats and spring forks -- like classic Orange Krates.

From about 9 years old until 14 years old I road my bike everywhere with my friends.. parents weren't available at our beck-and-call like they are now... we had a lot of Independence and it was great... I'm so glad in the 1980s early 90s.. I'm so glad I didn't grow up with social media! Social media is ruining generations of childhoods... childhood is suppose to be carefree and social media puts a lot unnecessary pressure on young kids.. don't get me wrong we had peer pressure but it wasn't constantly 24 hours a day... These kids never get a break because they are always on social media.. turn off your computer and go outside and enjoy your childhood

When I was 9, my Aunt gave me some money for my birthday. I really wanted a 3 speed Schwinn Stingray but even with my savings from babysitting and odd jobs, I was still short. So my parents made me a deal; if I really wanted that bike, they would cover 1/2 the cost. I got the bike, it was Orange with a white seat and tassels and rode it everywhere! My little brother eventually cannibalized it for parts, by that time I had bought a Schwinn ten-speed which I kept through most of my adulthood. We used to ride in groups to the mall, 30 miles round trip. Parents always knew who I was with, but we had some freedom. It was great!

I believe this is more an American problem than a modern problem… Im German and i‘ve been riding a bike almost everywhere since I was 6 (19 now) And this is really common around here. Allthough all my friends, myself included, are able to drive a car, we still take our bikes at least 50% of the time… It’s just an amazing vehicle that allows you to have so much freedom at a young age, so it’s pretty sad to see how uncommon they aparantly have become in the US.

@@alfi6745 That’s because most places aren’t safe for bike riding. Take your average newer suburb. One can ride reasonably safely in the immediate residential area, but getting to stores, schools, parks, places people go usually requires getting on and off an interstate highway where bikes are prohibited--for good reason!

Wow! I just remembered when I was 9 years old I was riding my 10 speed and I turned my head to check out a girl and drove headfirst into a telephone pole... that was the first but definitely not the last time I embarrassed myself in front of a girl...🤗

I'm sure it wasn't the last! lol When I was younger, a sailor once walked into a pole. He was very embarrassed but I took it as a compliment :)

      Fair enough.
I can admit I'm a fan of both. Can't have Thanksgiving without Alice's Restaurant.
      PS
Can't have Midnight Cowboy or Goodfellas without Nilsson.

A bit of a bizarre mix of lots of things, but it does make a point.
Great old footage of some swingin' sixties and early 70s cars, pickups, and neat old work vehicles & delivery vans

Loved Bob Brush's contributions to "The Wonder Years" ... But don't forget to mention he was a creator and writer, etc of ... "Early Edition"
... and those who never saw that one hour drama series of the late 1990s really missed a gem of a TV show !

There is no "practical certitude". In our litigeous society, possibilites carry the same weight as the probability! Start, turning off the computer and mobile phones, when it is not absolutly necessary and be free again!
