Thanks so much for being a well of knowledge, Christian, and for sharing so much from that well totally free of charge. I love your mentality and your willingness to spread knowledge and music around. You're truly a blessing.
Never thought it would be that easy ;) Cheers Christian, now I'm staring at everything in the house like some crazed musical hungry lion... Nothing is safe
Unlike other sound companies, Spitfire Audio is more musician-friendly and is more open towards music in general, especially in technical and technological aspects. Keep up the excellent work and do what you guys always do the best..!! Regards to the entire Spitfire Audio team..!! Hoping to see more from you guys..!!
I Just wanna say THANK YOU, I,m learning so much in a Funny Way and YES, i,m learning. Thank you soooo much. And keep making more videos. BEST REG/David
You might also consider EQing the overtones and frequencies that aren’t the fundamental a little lower in relation to the fundamental. That often makes the sound more pleasing to the ear and a bit less dystopian. (Unless you’re going for a creepy vibe of course... then the overtones are invaluable) Also, layering multiple EQed octaves of the same sounds lovely.
Thanks! I literally abandoned sampling decades ago ( on my old Kurzwell or Ensoniq...) as it was such a long and tidiest process to layer different velocities, not to mention the sampling process itself... but now, I feel I can get back at it and actually enjoy this! ...but still remain a good Spitfire Audio customer... ;-)
My Akai 1000, with its 4 velocity layers and ever dimming screen is looking a bit SKUZZIE. 32 meg of ram. We used to do full memory reloads in the interval when I worked in the theatre. Terrifying. 🤯. You have inspired me to re visit the wonder of sampling. Your enthusiasm is priceless. 😊
Really splendid and inspiring, once again. I have not sampled anything since the early 90s/ mid 90s? Or since I sold my last sampler?? Hmmm... Ok, ok, let me see what I can find. Thanks Christian.
I will buy Kontakt "full" when Native will make a resizable window with resizable fonts. Today the Kontakt interface is impossible to read & I can't work with this software.
This is amazing. I’ve always wanted to try doing something like this in Logic but starting seemed intimidating. Can users store other things at pianobook to share? I have made a hertz / cents tuning calculator spreadsheet in open office for Logic Pro that I’d like to share with others but I need to find somewhere to put it where others can access it.
Just a small point Christian but I find that drag and drop of your .nki's (I'm guessing Kontakt 5 .nki's) into Kontakt 6 on Win 7 Studio One Pro doesn't work for me. I have to "load" them. Had me flumuxed for a while after I watched you drag them onto Kontakt's interface. Standalone Kontakt 6 does however! Great tut by they way and David is an excellent watch for Kontakt instrument building. Thank you.
I have a question, if anyone could answer. When Christian suggested that we film ourselves in the process and share our findings, did he mean specifically putting our own samples into this template that he introduced? Or does it just generally relate to creating sampled instruments from household objects, template or no template, and sharing our experience? Thanks in advance.
I would really like to know how to do the sfz version as well and I will feel most confident when you show me how to do that... Thanks for everything so far... Love from India
Actually, I'd never thought of this when originally watching the videos on first impressions on new Sampler, but is it because of Mr. Hilowitz that you -even subconsciously- named the Sampler "Dave"? :)
It sounded unbelievable in the first part ... but this video is amazing...just amazing...Hats off. Would love to try it. But my childish question is I don't have Logic Pro, instead I hold a license of Ableton Intro. Is it possible to do it with Ableton? Many thanks in advance. And Good luck for your future videos and projects. And yes, I loved the sound of metal (steel bowl) sound made by you here. Warm regards from Shreepad, Pune City, India
Great weekend to make music. I’m on vacation this weekend, but I’m looking forward to all the great instruments you all are making! Hopefully a lot of new Pianobook libraries on the way! 🙏🏾 @dafingaz
Yes.. I tried to open it too but it's not working :( There are 3 Files (.nki, .sfz., .exs) but no .logicx-File...so I can't open them. I don't know whats going wrong with that...
Nice trick with putting all the velocities in one big sample. Doesn't that increase the disk size drastically though ? the resulting samples look like that have 20% data and 80% silence.
One issue that might appear whit that template is that you from that point have to remember where and what that belongs to. Much better to name the sample file to the instrument name isn't it.
Hey, so a question for anyone who might have the answer... I made my first sample following the instructions for Kontakt, but for some reason the higher pitched samples are shorter in length than the lower pitched samples. eg. C6 is much shorter than C3. Any thoughts on why that happens and how to fix it?
Thanks but the template didn't work for me (: followed your outline to the letter but kontakt 5 seems to assign the velocity layer of the sample randomly..?
It did not work for me initially either. However when I went under the bonnet in Kontakt 6 my wav file was correctly mapped to the velocity layers but in the Wave editor the start and end markers were back to front. When I re-set the markers correctly (ie start marker at the start of the wave etc)it worked. I think this might be due me not editing my files to the zero crossing points. Does Kontakt automatically detect the zero crossing? I wish Kontakt could be resized I cant afford an electron microscope. Thanks Christian for this great tip I am sure I will get better. Btw I sampled a muted guitar.....it has it's moments.
@@actonblue2012 Ah yeah the same thing happened - I used less than 10 layers though, when i did it again, clip gain very healthy and used 10 notes it works !
@@MrGeekymusic I also managed to find the tiny button that makes the waveform bigger therefore making positioning the loop markers easier. Easy when you know how.😎
John - you don’t have to buy Komplete. Just crossgrade to the full version of Kontakt. Log into your NI account and it’ll show whether your eligible for a crossgrade discount. I did it last year. Well worth it to use pianobook samples as well as paid libraries.
I'm new to Logic and am hitting a few conceptual problems getting set up to split my dynamic layers for use by the sampler. I was expecting to find a .logicx template file to set up the general project space, but there are only .exs files which are, presumably, just Sampler configurations. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? BTW, this is great stuff - having a blast creating unique sounds this weekend!
In case it's not clear, it's the template with the 10 zones which is used at 12:55 that I'm looking for. The MMD templates linked above appear to be the sampler specific configurations used in the next step rather than the broader Logic project template which is used by Christian.
Got there in the end. The logic template isn't necessary as all it really looks like is visible highlights to mark where your noise separated samples need to end up. Might be worth adding for completeness though! Awesome stuff - love the approach - seems like a super efficient way of sampling single tone sources. Thanks Christian and Spitfire for the levels of enthusiasm and commitment to making music!
Oops - realised that the template being used probably set the sample rate to 48kHz rather than the 44.1kHz default. Failing to do this gives some 'interesting' results...
Nope, as Christian points out almost every time he carries out an action, this should work for whatever DAW and recording device you have. Enjoy - it's awesome stuff!
Really love your attitude towards sharing knowledge instead of squirrelling it away in an attempt to gatekeep
Exactly! I’m so tired of music experts being vague and secretive about the tricks of the trade.

Superb video. Thanks for making.

finally! was waiting for it :)
What a truly brilliant tutorial Christian... 99% really easy 1% a little bit lost in the Zone section but a rewatch should fix that.
Thanks for sharing, this is super useful!!!

Thank you very much 💖
Thanks Phil & Dave & Dave...I have a Zoom H6. Whats a good mic to use to record samples with the Zoom? Sounds incredible.
Is there a way to get the template? the link seems to be down :(

Can anyone suggest me a good budget microphone for recording vocals and samples?
"Vegan firework" - pouf....there goes my Muesli.
Has Anyone had any luck finding the MMD2020 template?? I have everything else sorted I just can't find the Logic template
Don't worry I just made one after watching further I realised its not a complex template. amazing video, cheers
Can I do that audio editing stuff in Audacity?
great video - inspiting as always - I'm off to hit things! (and record them) :)

13:46 , 13:53 At beginning volume amplifying was not adjusted, to high, and wave was cut. Clearly visible. This will sound not clear.

That's how the sample is pitched by the software - the faster it is played, the higher the pitch. Just like speeding up or slowing down a tape.
Thanks but the template didn't work for me (: followed your outline to the letter but kontakt 5 seems to assign the velocity layer of the sample randomly..?

Wow Christian - so amazing.
My problem: I only have the free version of Kontakt......
Its on a massively cheap deal at the moment, particularly if you're crossgrading (which you would be)
Can it be bought separately or do you have to fork out for a`Komplete?

Not yet!

What is this 'Dave' sampler? Is it from Spitfire?
I've been vegan for almost 7 years and can confirm that vegan fireworks do indeed look like that
Almost a Gamelan.
You could’ve just dragged the sample into below the tracks area to create a new file and put it into a sampler instrument
Any reason why you didn’t?
LorenzoWoodMusic not everyone has that version of logic.
@molassesh you can’t even hit preview in RX? Full reduction and call it good. Yikes.
So make music day is about people with a mac and logic? Oh and a smart phone. Fun for the masses.
