  • Fifty years after her father Éric, Marie Tabarly, his only daughter, is preparing to round Cape Horn in a few days at the helm of the legendary yacht "Pen Duick VI". She set off from Europe at the beginning of September and she is sailing around-the-world on a race with stopovers since 4 months already, almost identical to the voyage that Pen Duick completed in 1973.
I still remember the first time I met her, 2 years ago in Les Sables d'Olonne. Half-Polynasian on her mother's side, half-pirate on her father's, with that swaying buccaneer look, whether you're a girl or a boy, you can't look past her. A 'presence' as they say in the Vendée, with the charisma of a film heroine. I met her again before the start of her great race to make Pen Duick race again, in England, I saw her facing a sea lion in Cape Town, I interviewed her again on her arrival at the stopover in Auckland, New Zealand, I saw her, as majestic as her boat, set off to face Cape Horn for the first time in her young sailing life. That was three weeks ago in Auckland. Whole, radiant, disarmingly sincere, tough when she has to be, committed to defending the oceans and loving the animal world, I'd seen her on TV for her Elemen'Terre project, and now I'm discovering her in real life, at each of her stopovers, and I'm impressed. I've called this video Marie T, a modern-day heroine, and I think the answer to the question may well be yes, and I'd like to show you how later in this video, why, according to the academic definition of the modern hero, she is one. But first, who is she?
She'll probably never forget the accident in the Irish Sea that took the life of Éric Tabarly in 1998 and, at the age of 13, sounded the death knell for her childhood.
After taking her graduation, she enrolled in a BTS in communications in Lorient before turning to ethology and studying at the Haras de la Cense, then in Kentucky. She works mainly in Brittany, where she lives.
Her history with the sea? After the death of her father, the yachtsman Éric Tabarly, Olivier de Kersauson took her under his wing.
In 2004, he took her on a trial on his trimaran Geronimo. In 2011, she took part in the Pangaea expedition to Mongolia, led by explorer Mike Horn4. In October 2017, she took part in the Voiles de Saint-Tropez aboard Mariska, where four of her sailors were injured.
In November 2021, she took part in the Transat Jacques-Vabre with Louis Duc. It was her first race across the Atlantic13. She then planed to sail around the world again on Pen Duick VI, in 2018, but will only sail to Greenland.
Today, she takes on the southern seas. There is perhaps something of an initiation in this voyage aboard her father's boat, following in the footsteps of a race that Eric Tabarly had raced several times without ever succeeding. There is, perhaps, even the weight of our eyes on her shoulders, eager to see if she can live up to the standard of the boat and her father. "The weight of mourning, perhaps, and of the embarrassing tribute that was sometimes paid to her father, to the point of leaving her and her mother Jacqueline in an icy shadow. But without betraying or ever losing herself, 39-year-old Marie Tabarly has chosen her own battles and already won her greatest victory: making a name for herself and no longer being just 'the daughter of'." She has already been successfully charting her course ashore for a number of years, and now she is also rounding Cape Horn with the sextant and writing a new page in her history at sea. Well done, Marie, bon vent, see you soon in Punta del Este!

Marie is an amazing, talented lady. Her father was my childhood hero. Pen Duick VI is the most perfect yacht in the world. Amazing boat, but remember that her father sailed it solo to with the Trans Atlantic OSTAR! Incredible. I was fortunate to see Pen Duick VI during the recent visit to Cape Town. The yacht exudes power…like both the skippers.

Hi Aida, you hit the nail on the head with your comment that "without betraying or ever losing herself, 39-year-old Marie Tabarly has chosen her own battles and already won her greatest victory: making a name for herself and no longer being just 'the daughter of".
I did follow Eric Tabarly on Pen Duick VI when I was a young kid that got into sailing with my dad, and here I am, now aged over 60, but still following the sailing adventures of the same yacht, with Marie as a brilliant successor to her father. A 'though cookie', as we would say. Strong-willed and a bit stubborn from time to time, as the Breton bloodline dictates. My deepest respect for Marie and "may the wind always be at her back and the sun upon her face. And may the wings of destiny carry her aloft to dance with the stars." 🖖🙏
