    I went with the 887 because it was slightly better specs, 3 years warranty instead of 1 for the Massdrop and lastly the most important reason I chose the Monolith is simply that it’s not Drop or Massdrop and I could get it 48h after placing the order.

    • @Skylancer727
      @Skylancer727 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty sure that's the main reason people are buying it. Drop will often make you wait a month or two.

    • @kobishahar2962
      @kobishahar2962 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, that last point is why the Monolith will outsell the Drop option pretty soon and make it obsolete essentially. Lets not forget last year the wait time was even longer, i joined the April drop, got my amp in Sep. If the Monolith was around that time, to my knowledge at least, it would have been the one.

    • @MrB10N1CLE
      @MrB10N1CLE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Huh? The 789 is always in stock and will ship within a day, and you can add $50 for 3 year warranty. Although I would've gone with the 887 at that point.
      Edit: I know about the wait during a 'drop', but doesn't that mean you're buying the 789 at a discount then?

    • @davidwittmer2349
      @davidwittmer2349 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MrB10N1CLE The 789 is in stock now because the last "drop" which started in July did not ship until December. After it was pushed out a couple times Drop let people cancel their orders which left them with quite a few units on hand. I am sure many who canceled their Drop orders then ordered the 887 and received it in November, including me. I actually like the slimmer more polished-looking form factor of the 887 myself.

    I cancelled my 789 order and got the 887 a while back for three reasons: 1) drop pushed back the 789 several times 2) longer warranty on 887 3) 887 slightly wider frame and stacks slightly better with the RME DAC.

    The Monolith 887 is a great option if you prefer it’s aesthetics to the Drop 789 (2 years more warranty is awesome too)
    One thing I will point out though is currently you can get the 789 for $350. Drop still has “Massdrop” labeled 789s for a $50 discount. Also (at least for me anyway in Canada) the shipping is cheaper as well for the 789.

    I have a 789, a Violectric V281 and recently, an Audiovalve Solaris. For DACs, I have the Violectric V850 and Airist R2R. I can't really tell the DACs apart. My friend has the Denafrips Ares II. I can absolutely tell the difference with that! It is incredible. Anyway, I brought all my stuff to his place in NYC, for CanJam on Saturday. (Where I picked up the Audiovalve by surprise.) On Sunday, we brought my three amps and his Ares to Audio 46 and auditioned LCD4. (I have LCD2c right now.) Guess who won? Yup, the 789! The Solaris is a little nicer for rock and vocals, but only by hair splitting margins.. And that thing sells for $6k new. The 789 is hands down better for electronic stuff, low bass and high speed. I'll keep the Airist and obviously, the 789. Everything else is already up on Audiogon. Long story short, the THX amps are incredible and will scale up with your other components. My only dig against it, is that with gear in its price range, it'll tend to sound a little thin and sterile. Though, you would need a Class A or tube amp next to it, to really realize that.

    • @geoffreyalter5016
      @geoffreyalter5016 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree the 789 and 887 scale up with better source components. My Pathos Aurium beats my 789. More inner detail and the tonality just sounds right to me. Regardless of distortion and measurements, music is an intensely personal and emotive experience. My biggest issue with the 789 is a lack of musicality. However, at it's price I have yet to hear a better amp. It will never be my end game. Actually, no amp will as the concept of end game mitigates what I find to be so enjoyable about this hobby. The journey... For those buying a THX amp, pair it with a great DAC.

    I am interested in buying a new setup completely. I do not own anything as of right now besides some dt 990 pro but I have never taken full advantage of them. Would the 887 in combination with a 200-300 DAC be better vs for instance the iFi Micro iDSD Black Label? And yes in due time i want to upgrade my headphones as well so I'm interested in what would be more "future proof". Any recommendations?

    I got a 789 right before they announced the 887 (my 789 was part of the extended production of the second batch, I think, since it still has the "Massdrop" branding as opposed to the "Drop" one) and it's been great. I have yet to find a headphone that it doesn't drive well.

    What makes me hesitate is solving distortion problem versus negative feedback as opposed to excellent engineering. Total Harmonic Distortion specs can be excellent; however, negative feedback can influenced things like rise time or transient response. These aren't reflected in Total Harmonic Distortion measurements.

    Josh great review man! I have a THX amp as well as many do in this hobby, I think they are great for many of the reasons you said. What I didn’t realize when I was first starting out is I don’t really think any of the THX offerings are end game but really great reference amps for what you described in your review.
    For a more enjoyable listen I think you should check out the Schiit LYR3/Bifrost 2 combo. The LYR 3 is a hybrid solid state tube so you get the detail you want with a touch of the warmth that is also more lovely for a more enjoyable less fatiguing listen. Bottom line IMO THX amps are awesome especially for the money but people should also try at least a quality Hybrid Tube amp once they do they may find themselves listening more to those whenever possible vs the exacting more unforgiving sound of the THX offerings! Love your channel dude, your visual craftsmanship, audio, edits and personality shine through on your videos. Keep up the great work dude! Much respect. MR

I finally couldn't decide if I need to add a dac+Amp or just simply go with an amp because it doesn't say anything numerically about how loud the output can be on this Monolith THX AAA 887 model. I wish we knew these specs. Like a Fiio k9 pro vs this amp alone for someone doesn't necessary need a Dac.

    The Monolith 788 Dac/Amp is pretty slick. I don't have a ton of complaints. I'm running it with the TR-X00 with a balanced cable and it's got plenty of power for those headphones. I think I probably would go deaf well before the +15db maximum output. The DAC section has some nice DSP options like shelf and parametric EQ and the DIRAC is nice for gaming. I think if you have high impedance or low sensitivity headphones you might need more, but the output SPL from the extra 3 watts isn't like, earth shattering, it just might not get to full bloom on the world's most hard to drive cans.

  • @JoonasD6
    @JoonasD6 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lots of sensible dac+amp prediction, but there's a big group of people who can't have such as an end-game device: people who have multiple sound sources. If a combo dac is used, it gets thrown directly to the amp side, and since amp is not a mixer, you can't bring in an extra feed. (You may be able to get the dac signal out but can't return it.) So a separate dac is necessary so you can mix the source together with other stuff (computers, instruments, mics...) and the amp will just be the final destination of audio flow. (Oh, I wish there'd be a midrange-priced dac that could take in multiple digital sources... ;_;)

    Hi Josh Will here, Man! You're videos are really top of the line and I've learn a lot( I bought my 4xx and 6xx because of you my friend and thanks again) since I've been following your channel. My question, Rupert Neve headphone amplifier is not a pretty amplifier, but, what I've heard is, is that it's a beast, if you've had the chance to check it out, I'd like you're opinion. I'm going to spend( my last penny) 500 dollars on a headphone amplifier, and when I do that will be the last I buy on this planet. You're my go to guy for the "Real Skinny" on the best( yes, I'm really old LOL) later.

      Rupert Neve is fine, but without the power for insensitive headphones and difficult match with 600 Ohm DT-880. Parameters are not as wildly impressive as these but if you already have one you should be ok.

    Hi Josh, hey everyone in the comments! Sorry for a stupid question, but I feel kinda lost in my headphone journey.
    I want to upgrade, but unfortunately in my region there is no way to test new headphones before buying, very hard to sell them or get some sort of customer support. Also, Drop (Massdrop) products are not an option here...
    Could you please give some advice?
    I've previously owned HD650 (very pleasing hp, but for me they lack sub-bass and the "veil" is a little annoying), Hifiman HE-500 (not very comfortable, good bass and treble extension, but the sound lacks "body" and the highs are a bit harsh) and now I've got HE400s with Brainwavz HM5 pleather pads (good overall, but lacks bass extension and some clarity in the higher regions).
    So now I'm looking for something with good amount of bass and "body" with clean but not shrill treble.
    Thank you for your time and have a great day!

      Doubt it. I can't tell the difference between my EL AMP vs the THX 887 or the THX 789. Considering the Atom is supposedly a cleaner amp than the EL AMP I'd say you're not going to notice the difference in sound quality. The only reason you'd need to upgrade from the Atom is power output or you want XLR connection.
