Like the backlit gauges. Still miss rotary dials, but I think those days are over. Real buttons on the steering wheel. YES! To VW, stop using black shiney plastic! It collects dust, fingerprints and scratches too much. Matte black plastic is just fine. Losing the manual transmission was inevitable. V-Tex is so good now, animal skin can be discontinued.

I feel like we're going backwards with all new cars: non integrated screens just hanging over the dashboard like a stupid iPad, glossy black buttons that are just fingerprint and dust magnets, over complicated touch interfaces, the **LOSS OF THE MANUALS**. Everything looks like cost cutting measures, but the prices keep creeping up all the time.
Not painting under the hood and a manual strut is part of the "we make it cheaper but sell it for more" hateful trend.
I wonder how much the special IQ lights will be to replace if they fail/ you have a small accident. We don't really need fancy lights, functionality and reliability is more important.
Otherwise it looks ok. Doesn't bring a lot of emotion like the GTIs of old.
Edit: Love the tartan cloth seats though.
    Ranting again :)

The Golf is great to drive, but the interior continues to be a real disappointment - particularly at this price-point. Where is the return to quality that VW CEO Schafer recently promised?
Certainly not in the plasticky doors. Nor in the clunky center screen with its cheap-looking bezel. Nor in the tacky "Piano Black" paint on the lower center console. What a let-down!

I'm a huge Golf GTI fan, so I'm not unhappy with what I see here at all. I do wonder, though, why VW didn't put the sunglass compartment back along with the driver's side glove compartment, and put back the hydraulic lift strut for the hood. These are all premium features that helped make the Mk7 seem like such a perfect overall package. I thought for sure VW would have put these back since they say they are closely listening to the customer. Come to think of it, cloth A-pillar trims, and a real engine cover would have been nice, too. And, yes, I'm a current Mk8 owner.

No denying a paddle shift dual-clutch is an effective transmission and also fun, but scrabbling to grab that next gear in a Integra Type S or Civic Type R is fun (indeed nostalglic fun, but how does that differ from just plain fun?). The rear taillights and signal lights should be separated, as red and orange might not be too obvious even when the signal is on.
On the other note, I like the dashboard design that has the center console angled towards the driver.

  • @user-gr4oz8jb1o

So, no fog lights? Love the five diamond design on the MK8 which is practical for night driving as well. Why would they ditch them? Makes no sense. I don’t dislike the MK8.5, but neither do I love it. I do not care for those wheels much either. I’m glad I purchased a MK8 40 AE 6spd manual. For me it’s pretty much perfect. Again, I don’t dislike the MK8.5, but am surely not moved in any way to upgrade to one.

    • @katiecannon8186

The 8 has that “swoops” element in the center of the hood as well. Now it’s just a straight line. Between that and getting rid of the fog lights, I’m so impressed with the new grill.
And I despise huge unintegrated screens.
I also quite like the capacitive buttons. So I don’t think real buttons is worth giving up the better designed grill & and integrated screen.

Exterior is great, but I feel like honda and mazda have better interiors. The vw dash is not cohesive, the tablet is too square and tall. There is too much gloss plastic. Gloss plastic reminds me of very cheap electronics (like tablets). I do not understand why german carmakers think gloss/piano plastic looks premium. We moved away from vw to honda for that reason.

Personally I wouldn't buy a GTI with an automatic, that's just not what I want from a hot hatch. For that price I'd want the option of a manual, especially as other Golfs are available that way. With some other flaws like the gloss black, lack of physical controls, and that stuck on iPad I'll pass.

0:11 Missing the cool looking fog lights. 0:16 It's a shame that the rear logo isn't illuminated too. 0:58 There was a time when the honeycomb grille set the GTI apart, but unfortunately it has now been applied to others further down in the range. VW seems to have a habit of doing this cheapening, e.g. "R Line" badge vs the true R versions'". Side GTI badge looks gross. 1:54 Loathe this alloy wheel design. Very Subaru SUV. 2:45 IMHO, electric seat adjustment for both front pews should be standard at GTI -level. 7:02 Absent gas strut I could live with, if they 6:36 offered a power tailgate, as per the wagon.

The GTI no longer has anything to do with affordability, being a sporty car for young people, etc. It's just an obscenely overpriced turd generated in some Excel. When you have this kind of money, get a 128ti. It's better in every single way.

I personally like the new Golf and feel like, for a big automotive company facing lots of cheaper alternatives to the Golf, or other VW products for that matter, is doing pretty well. From the perspective of how the global economy is shaping up, they are providing a lot more value on product points people come into contact with everyday. I Also don’t mind an unpainted underneath of the hood, if it means it’s an ‘eco-saving’. Kudos to VW
