    They obviously skewed this commercial to favor Chevrolet, a common advertising tactic of the era, it was a great car, nonetheless. I'd still take any of those '66 models over anything made today! Those were real, non-computerized, *ALL-AMERICAN-MADE* mechanical masterpieces! From the time I was 5 or 6 years old in 1965-66, I can remember how my father bought new cars for both himself and my mother biannually. Pop usually bought Ford, Lincoln or Mercury products, but, he'd occasionally come home with a GM product, usually a Cadillac, Fleetwood; if it was a good deal. The 1967 Caddy Fleetwood he came home within 1968 was particularly exceptional beauty! That Fleetwood was a floating battleship, with luxury in every inch of her massive carriage! When the govt. began to mandate MPG and force 'The Big Three' to install 'Smog-Control' devices which choked the life out of the best American engines, it was the beginning of the end of the traditional American car market, option packages and the like are pretty much gone today.

    The Caprice was a beatiful car and some of the things car enthusiasts would do to them was unbelievable, they didn't make that many of them. I had a '66 Impala SS 327CID in high school, I was forever replacing ball joints on that car and it ALWAYS had a camber issue. That engine had so much torque, seems like it'd chew starters up every month but, before that, I had a '65 which had NONE of those issues.

    In 1965, the flagship of the full size Chevrolet line was the Impala SS. But in '66, Chevy was moving away from performance in their big cars. The emphasis was shifting towards luxury. And perhaps in response to the Ford LTD, Chevy introduced the Caprice.

  • @DownassMusic

    How was the last race filmed? From a helicopter? An airplane? Very impressive production that must have been filming that. I’ll bet they did lots of runs to get that outcome without one of those cars having a mechanical issue considering the heat! Also, since most of the other cars were also GM products, weren’t the heads of those other GM divisions all pissed off that their own parent company was trying to take their sales? I mean aren’t they kinda biting them selves in the rear? They should have raced against all other non-GM cars no? What am I missing here?

    • @joe6096
      @joe6096 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Back then there was only GM, Ford, and Chrysler. If they were to film a race without other GM cars there would be two other cars. Also, this is partly what contributed to GM's eventual bankruptcy. There was no way to avoid GM cannibalizing itself when Chevy, Pontiac, Olds, and Buick all had essentially the same car. Too many divisions selling the same car. It started with chassis sharing in the 50s, then in the 70s they eliminated divisional engine designs, and by the 90s they were selling 4 rebadged versions of the same car.

      Joe It was fun times. I mean they did the same in the 00s Pontiac Aztec & Buick Rendezvous, Chevy Equinox and Pontiac Torrent, Chevy Cobalt and Pontiac G5, Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon Denali. Ford and Chrysler did the same things also. I think Oldsmobile was canned because sales where dropping since the mid 90s and they where dead weight. Hummer, Pontiac, and Saturn got the hammer because of the recession. At least we can say with the exception of the Escalade, the Cimmaron, and the Allante has designs and engines all of there own..

      @Rex Kramer - Ace is simply WRONG. What makes his statement WRONG is the word EVERYTHING. Every vehicle does not fit into that category. Front wheel drive platforms are NOT the top sellers. according to Car and Driver, the top selling vehicles this year (so far) are:
      1. Ford F Series
      2. Chevrolet Silverado
      3. Ram Pickup
      4. Toyota RAV 4

      Scooter George: Lol... Your top three are not considered passenger vehicles and owe a great deal of their sales to fleet work trucks. I agree not “everything” is front wheel drive, but you and I both know Ace of Spades was not being literal. Passenger “cars” ARE predominantly fwd.

    • @scootergeorge9576
      @scootergeorge9576 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Primus54 - The bulk of these sales are not commercial or fleet. Just stroll through a large parking lot and see for yourself what people are buying for private use. Extended cap pickups and SUV's are, for many, the sedans and station wagons of today. There are not sufficient fleet and "work truck" orders to make these the top selling vehicles.
      As for Ace, I admit that he was not being literal BUT it irks me when people speak in absolutes - everyone, always no one, never... In the majority of cases these people are WRONG. But when it comes to passenger cars, sedans, the front wheel drive format is very efficient in size and space utilization. The 1959 Morris Mini showed that. But have you looked at what Ford is doing? In the USA, this is the end for FWD sedans. The Fusion is in it's final year. The RWD Mustang will be the only "passenger" car. That should show you where the market is moving. The base automatic transmission in the GTO was the two speed. Not very good off the line with a 1.76:1 low ratio. I remember road tests of a base auto GTO running the high 15's.

      In 64 the top was Impala and Galaxie 500. In 1965 Ford shocked everybody with the much more luxurious Galaxie 500 LTD, later evolved into the LTD. It was marketed as quieter than a Rolls-Royce. My uncle had a maroon paint and interior, black vinyl roofed LTD and as a kid I was awestruck. The upholstery was a much softer silk-like fabric, very luxurious. Chevy was caught flat-footed and as I recall introduced the almost equivalent Caprice in the mid year 65. Both interiors were more upscale than they had ever been before, the fabric, tufting, door panels, fake wood, chrome, carpeting were all a step up. Another uncle had a 66 Caprice, and I can tell you it was much softer sprung and shock celebrated than our 65 Impala.. as a teenager I bounced on both rear bumpers and the Caprice was super softly sprung by comparison!

One was a 1962. That was the year of the "MYSTERY" motor. How many do you remember that 500? The CHEVY MOTOR BLEW UP!!!! I don't remember a Chevy running in NASCAR in 1966. If they did.
