To be fair, there's a difference in patience in grinding and a patience in trying to do every calculation you can beforehand on what you're going to do and plan to make sure crucial members don't faint on you that you can't use later down the road to potentially completely kill a run. If the Abra have an issue of progressing, you don't have to start completely from scratch if it dies and just have to think of another way to overcome and clearly to grind. There's 2 different kind of patiences there. I'd rather level a Bulbasaur into a Venusaur in Route 1 than to do a Nuzlocke.
Grinding a single pokemon is work, but you don't always have the risk of a bad fight completely killing a run. That right there is an easy way to just completely kill motivation vs. trying your best and realizing a single mon run just isn't feasible.

Doing a mono-type challenge in Crystal with Water-types should be relatively easy since you'll have a lot of them to work with. Your encounter routing shouldn't be too bad, either, should you choose to play it as a Nuzlocke. As for a Bug-type run with only Johto Bug-types, doing it as a Nuzlocke would be a _terrible_ idea, but I know it should be possible. Ledian and Yanma probably wouldn't be of much help, but Forretress, Shuckle, Heracross, and Ariados should be able to defeat Lance and Red together.
Tbh, Ledian can learn Thunderpunch and Ice Punch (and due to its high SDef, it can go well against Lance), and Rollout works surprizingly well with Shuckle. I did a mono-bug run in Crystal some time ago, and they were better than I expected.
@Jrose11, you should definitely try a only steel pokemon run. I already did it with a bit of creativity but I'll love to see how you address it, specially at the beginning. Great video as always!

I know you said that nuzlock ain't for you but if you're seeking another one to do, Rock or Fighting pokemon in 3rd gen Hoenn are actually pretty ok to do, bonus point with the Steven fight in the end. If anyone is reading this, have a nice day.
Jrose “nuzlockes are too hard” Also jrose “im gonna beat this game using unpopped popcorn and i will spend 4,000 hours doing this if thats what it takes”
I feel like level capping was what the devs had in mind all along but didn't want the game to be too hard for children. You can really see what they were going for in their game and it's pretty masterful game design with coverage, useful utility moves, and annoying healing loops. I love watching Nuzlocke content for that very reason. You get to see the true beautiful game design of Pokémon games.
Most nuzlockers allow leveling past a leader's ace once the battle has started. Some even edge their mons to guarantee at least one level up during the battle. Your run, your rules though.
I still think not using candies to level up is simply a time waster, I understand that pkm can faint if you mess up but you can always farm the earliest grass, it takes forever but you'll never faint. And your Pokémon dies because you didn't farm enough is hardly relevant to the strategy/luck you need to beat a nuzlock. Plus you do have the absolute level cap restrictions, so mistakes in planning could happen if you didn't ev train before candies
Hisuian Qwilfish, and it's hardly the first example of this. We already have mons like clobbopus/grapploct, inkay/malamar, dragalge, the gen 3 fossils, stunfisk, etc. that are not water type.
I'm also terrible at nuzlockes, but still plan on doing nuzlockes of each generation using only pokemon introduced in each successive game. I've gotta say that among poison types, Crobat is definitely a highlight in GSC, and one of my favorite Pokemon from my crystal nuzlocke
Why would you train a 32 Grimer against a 37 TentaCRUEL? Any special attack he uses would kill that Grimer from nearly full HP. And that is being generous to Grimer.
