"I'm Your Captain " and "Closer to Home," are really one song, and story in two parts, and are always played together. The story of a mutiny on a sailing ship, and then the captain's survival, and journey back home.
I always felt getting closer to his home meant his death
And I thought they poisoned him or tried to strangle him so they could get his boat…either way, great song!!!
My interpretation matches yours@@laurenpeck3609
Though I've never seen an explanation from them.
@@laurenpeck3609maybe...I think we are close to it, lol. In this crazy world...who's the President? What a joke..,.😢
@@laurenpeck3609 Yep
Keep in mind this was three guys, Mark Farner, the epic lead vocalist who also did lead guitar, Don Brewer on drums and backing vocals, Mel Schacher in killer bass. Fire band fire reaction.
Just ask Homer Simpson 😂
I saw them at Shea Stadium in 1971 with Humble Pie (Peter Frampton) as the opening act.
The first show I ever went to.
Damn, what a show, so jealous.👍
@rabooey From what I remember (it was the early 70's, LOL) yes it was.
@@mitchh9713 Hahahah I hear ya.
Now that's a CONCERT for it's era in Rock ! Good on ya !
I was there too. They both blew out the stadium.
A masterpiece! This band had a huge following and dominated live concerts with their exciting and captivating performances !
Only 2 bands sold out Shea Stadium. First was The Beatles and then Grand Funk Railroad did it 3 weeks faster. GFR fans were so crazy, their jumping threatened to tear down the bleachers. They brought in engineers to see if they might collapse. They're a band that gives 200% during live performances so you need to see some live ones!
And as a result, they had to build a new stadium. The live.
Concert 71 from there shows The kids making the bleachers move up-and-down.
Grand Funk has tons of excellent songs
Cassic rock like classical music with different movements and time signatures. 3 guys. Wow!!!!
You'd also love their live version of "Inside Lookin' Out"
I have this vinyl to this DAY
Me too and I would open the album cover to the gatefold that had them playing live at Madison Square Garden. Something you can't experience today with streaming and CDs. We had it good man!!!!!
OG !
So do I. I'm of that generation, other then the obvious band, Beatles, The Who, The Stones, I liked The Doors, Blood Sweat and tears, and the 2 top ones The Doors and The Band. However, it is hard to pick a favorite, so much good music back then.
I kind of take it as a mutiny at sea. And him being ill unable to stop it he is pleading with them to no avail as they start choking him. The sound of the waves and sea birds are what he hears as the fade out begins. Fade-out either as he is slowing losing consciousness from the strangulation and death is bringing him closer to “Home” or he has been cast afloat in a row boat and he is somewhat delirious repeating out loud his thought that- “I’m getting closer to my home” and as he gets farther from the main ship his voice fades.
I took it as being metaphorical as is most classic rock. Perhaps political. Either way, great song. Part of what I love about classic rock. Like all great art everyone takes a little something different away from it
I bought this album when I was 13 years old. My first one. I'm now 66 and still loving it
I saw them at the Inglewood Forum in Los Angeles in 1970. They opened up for Black Sabbath. Can you imagine being there with two groups who were at the top of their game. I'll never forget it
Cool, this tune was suggested a while ago, now you know why I asked for it. Another of those Classic Rock Tunes that must be added to your Playlist. Grand Funk Railroad is another Three Man Band that produced a large body of songs that became radio hits both AM and FM. This one is a Live favorite and the crowds love it.
kudos good sir. Fantastic band!!!!!
I sing this chorus....I'm getting closer to my home...It opens my heart to creator...peace
The world is terrible now...who's the President? 😞
When I was young listening to this song I always thought about Captain Kirk! 😂
If one doesn’t love this song they don’t love music
this is what it's about. A captain is in his cabin, but literally very sick. He's getting delusional maybe even dying, he starts to think that people are trying to take the ship away. Again getting delirious. When he says I'm getting closer to home, it might be him dying.
Great analogy, this song is one of their best in my humble opinion!
Of the many interpretations, this is exactly how it sounded to me, and how it makes me feel!
If you had this album LIKE this comment.
Still have og vinyl!!
I knew people who knew people that did:)
Cool. I have the Cassette/CD@@brandonjones1349
Still have it.
as a young teen I was all ....oh ya GFR. what ever. I could never find the band that had the most badass rock song I ever heard. Then I realized it was GFR's Inside Looking Out.
This was 1983. I've been a fan ever since. Wow! what a band.
side note. My mom remaired and my step brothers were 9-12 years older. So at age 12 I was listening music a decade older...and loving it!
Mel's bass ❤
Epic! The funky break that kicks off the solo in "Closer to Home" is my favorite groove from the song. Fwiw, I think the Captain died and it's his spirit getting closer to home with every repeat of the chorus.
I have heard this song many times in the last 45 plus s years still makes me weep
The GFR!!!! Man I was about 10 when this came out, my cousin rocked it because he played bass, and GFR had the best bass!!! Proud to have grown up in the time of the great rock and the Grand Funk Railroad!!!
I was a huge fan of Grand Funk in the early 70's. Listened them constantly it seemed. Their live shows are so powerful. Traveled down to Columbus OH to see them in 73. Mark, Don, and Mel are a big stage presence. Absolutely love your videos.
This song is always my answer when asked what my fave classic rock song is. Just something about it is beautiful and sad at the same time.
It's a timeless RnR ditty. The whole album is really classic, but this is definitely the hi-lite.
Don Brewer killin it on the drums
I am a collector of albums, I keep and I sell, Grand Funk is one I get ask for all the time. 😺🎶
Cleveland Symphony Orchestra on the outro.
GFR. Sold out Shea stadium faster than the Beatles did. I believe it was 1972 they added a keyboardist 😂😂.The song conveys the pleas of a captain on a troubled sea voyage and facing a mutiny from his crew. Its use of an orchestra during the long repeated refrains of the closing movement served to differentiate it from much of Grand Funk's work. Several interpretations of the song have been given; most revolve around the Vietnam War, and "I'm Your Captain" is popular among veterans of that conflict.
Now listen to
RIDE CAPTAIN RIDE by Blues Image,
COME SAIL AWAY by STYX,
SLOOP JOHN B by the Beach Boys,
THE SOUTHERN CROSS by Crosby, Stills and Nash,
COOL CHANGE by The Little River Band,
YELLOW SUBMARINE by the Beatles,
BRANDY, YOUR A FINE GIRL by Looking Glass.
ATLANTIS by Donovan,
CALYPSO by John Denver.
SINK THE BISMARK by Johnny Horton.
SAILING by Christopher Cross.
So kong is it played over a high powered vintage stereo system like the one I posses.
When I was young I listened to this on vinyl repeatedly
Me too, but more 8 track
1. My all time favorite GFR song!
2. Saw them in the Reno GSR on 10/22/22 😎
3. I was in the US Navy for 24 years so there's somthin' there
5. Three months? How about a nine month deployment.
Oh hell yeah, GREAT tune. 🤘
Reminds me of so much youth.
❤ Great song. Great reaction, as usual my man. I love how you listen more than talk. I think it means you are really taking it in. All the best, and keep it going. ❤❤❤
This band is criminally underrated and on that note; how does Mel Schacher not come up when speaking about the greatest bass players??? Freakin' ridiculous!
They didn't have much music
Check out inside looking out, the live version
Another great example of the long ostinado outro pretty much invented (for rock/pop music) by McCartney in Hey Jude. Other awesome examples include The Boxer, Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In, Celebrate, Atlantis.
Loving Grand Funk !!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Great reaction to a great song.Mark,Don and Mel were great together.I have a band that was very good playing live...Golden Earring. They toured the US a few times, and were great in concert.Radar Love,The Vanilla Queen,Twilight Zone and Are You Receiving Me are all great, and they have a lot more. The lead guitarist, song writer and one of the singers is George Kooymans, the bass player Rinus Gerritsen, drummer Cesar Zuiderjijk and singer guitar, and flute Barry Hay started playing together around 1970,but George and Rinus started the band with others in the early 60's.They were from the Netherlands and are really worth listening to.They finally stopped playing in 2022 when George was diagnosed with ALS.One of the longest runs of any rock band.
Loved it
They are a group from my home town- Motown!!!
They are great!
Masterpiece
Good Album 🎶🎸
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. Your viewers have excellent taste. Oh, and you're adorable.
This song brings back memories of my younger brother playing his drums aas he listened to it. To say he was (is) a good percussionist is a bit of an understatement.
This song is on TV all the time now in the Chevy Silverado commercials.
A timeless classic, great band! Next, check out Inside Looking Out live 1969! ✌️
Pure greatness!
Some nice changes in this one..love GFR!!!
I dig this explanation: ...a poignant anthem about seeking solace, finding inner strength, and ultimately returning to a place of peace. The lyrics convey a sense of longing, isolation, and the struggle for independence, using the imagery of a ship at sea to symbolize a journey towards self-discovery. The captain's plight can be interpreted as a metaphor for facing challenges and obstacles in life with resilience and perseverance. The repeated refrain of "I'm getting closer to my home" suggests a journey towards redemption and a sense of coming back to one's roots. This can be seen as a metaphor for finding one's way back to a place of comfort, security, and belonging.
I always thought this tune typified when all the long lost wondering hippies of the late 60’s era started coming ‘home’ in the early 70’s cause this tune was HUGE and resonated with the youth culture of its day. The prodigal children were returning from their ‘trips’. (Yes. I’m partially drug referencing) 😂😂🤷♀️🙏🙏💯😛
Aimless Lady is another great track
We had some amazing Musicians back in the day.
I can see you were digging that bass. Love. This. Tune! Fun to play.
My understanding is that this song is about a serviceman longing to return home from Vietnam
What a nice reaction channel. Keep it up.
Great harmonies! GFR sounds like an epic garage band on steroids, IMHO!
They are so good! I never pass up an opportunity to listen to their music!
A real classic of the 60’s loved growing up in the 50’s and 60’s! Another great group to check out is, Crack the Sky, song: Nuclear Apathy album cut! Then back track to their first album! Thanks
Farner has been screwed over a lot during his music career...It even seems prophetic now ...GFR (his ship) has been taken away from him by his own band mates..But he is forgiving and still good hearted..
Mesmerizing sound… fading into the distance.
Brilliant
Possible suggested reaction. GrandFunk Railroad: "Inside Looking out" with video and audio. Epic. It's a funky High energy Classic rock vibe×10
Oh my heart! Took me back to high school! I was just thinking about this song the other day! ❤❤
As a young teen, this was one of the two very first LP's I owned, this an Led Zeplin's first album.
Inside Lookin Out" in 1969 , live , the BEST !
A great band from, Flint, Michigan! I highly recommend “A Bad Time” by this band!
Excellent analysis!
I like your analysis.
You should react to live concert at Shea Stadium
Great reaction
Check out "Some Kind A Wonderful".......great rockin love song!!!!
The crew, or a crew member poisoned the captain, but he survives, and hopes to make it home without dying.
Maybe because I knew this one first, but the beginning certainly sounds like an ode to Bob Dylan’s 113th Dream
Patty-you should try American Band by Grand Funk . Great song.
I'm having a 1970's flashback ❤❤
I liked it!
GFR, Inside Looking Out!
😂😂😂as i am watching this vid, i am wearing my GFR t shirt. How the hell is that😮
Synchronicities are the best! 😊
@@darlanilsen879you're psychic...is Trump going to win? Hope so!!
This song is told from the perspective of the Captain of the U.S.S. Pueblo, and intelligence gathering, spy ship that was boarded by the North Koreans during the Vietnam war. The crew was held captive for some time and the ship was never returned to the U.S. I was in the navy on a destroyer at the time as a radio man. When this ship was taken over we were instructed to change all our crypto gear to a new setting using emergency crypto settings. As a radioman with all this secret and top secret gear, we had special weighted canvas bags with grommets all through the bag and were were to put all our crypto info into the bags and throw them over the side if we were being boarded by a hostile country . I always wondered if the radioman on the Pueblo had the chance to do that.
You MUST watch one of their stadium videos
Try 'footstompin' music' or 'black licorice '!
❤Hey JMBOY Check out The Song off the Shine On Album by Grand Funk called
( To Get Back In ) 🤟 Request from
Chris Davidson CjD
Lol,lot's of acid trips listening to this!
Chech it out live too man. GF lays it down live jack!!!
According to Mark Farner the guy singing this song and who wrote the song. It was a dream he had and the song is about and dedicated to Jesus Christ. His words not mine.
WOW what a great band.
this band is poo poo'd because they didnt' take music leasons at university. A garage band as they say.
The disrespect is on epic levels. They ROCKED THE ENTIRE USA. The PEOPLE loved them!!!!!!!!
Inside looking out. It is a MUST!

HEY JM Subs... you older guys and gals... If you want to see JM do Arlo Guthrie- :Alice's Restaurant" 1967 album version.. Like this request.
I'd kind of like to see people do Arlo's version of City of New Orleans. A little less lengthy for the reactor's schedule.
Both are great tunes and should be done back to back.@@chrisjamieson3452
give a listen too Grand Funk Railroad Black Licorice Live it will blow you away thanks
Such a shame every reactor only wants paying customers to suggest songs. Ok your station. I will not stay long. This. music was my youth as it came out in 60s 70s. So no need to stay. We paying support other venues outside these reaction stations. Just saying. Enjoy this music which is top tier .Grand Funk was so underrated. Never got into rock and roll hall of fame either. Totally robbed.. I hope it draws those who don't know this is true music to your channel. Good day
DOWN MY COUNTRY ROAD .. should be your next song... do your self a favour... say no more ☮️🇦🇺🇺🇸
Just a fantastic song.... home....whats home anymore...in this terible world. Whis the current administration?😢😮
the only band in history that upstaged Led Zeppelin Live...just saying:)
Vietnam War'
Not in the Rock Hall of Fame. What a joke.
GFR was America's answer to the British Invasion.
And they brought the point home with their song We Are American band. Glad you chose the album instead of the video which is shorter and noisy.
Watching them perform Inside Looking Out is a real treat though.
Likely this is just a song, but a great song.
Mark Farner has been a Rancher most of his life.
A beautiful song you can't listen to it at night when driving. it'll put you to sleep.🙄
🤠🏞️🐂
