Jim Gordon was blessed with incredible talent but cursed with untreated mental illness . He self medicated with drugs that didn’t treat the illness. Sad story. I guess most of the really effective medications weren’t available in the 1970’s.

My very first rock concert---16 years old, Derek and the Dominos---November 1970, Painters Mill Maryland. First time smoked pot too---oh boy a double dose. Very few if any, concerts after that experience ever lived up to that one and I went to many in Chicago. Maybe it was the Pot? Naw---it was the music and the Players.
I saw them with Duane Allman playing the 1st part of the show. 1st song was Layla. Plenty of pot too. in December 1970 at Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa. Great show.
I was 16. It was my 3rd concert. I saw 5Hendrix at the Baltimore Civic Center in May, 1969, my 1st concert, I was 15!, Then I saw Spirit and Iron Butterfly in Baltimore. Then we moved to Tampa. I have seen a lot of concerts since then.

Holy smokes. I have never heard this version before. Back in olden days, we used to mail CD’s all around. There was a guy from Australia that I corresponded with and together we thought we had the complete recorded history. I did have a Johnny Cash disk, but this was not on it. This Album… not much to say but absolute greatness. We all wish the dominos lived on longer than they did, however it’s clips like this that make them a timeless group. Recent receiver of the 40th anniversary 2-disc edition of the album and recent viewer of their time on the Johnny cash show and holy cow was it everything I asked for and more. Long live Eric, Duane, Bobby, Carl, Jim, and the rest of the dominos. One of the greatest bands to ever live
Fabulous performance, do wish they had filmed it, but only It's Too Late and the duets with Carl Perkins and Johnny made the show. You can hear Johnny saying that if the producer is OK with it, Eric has agreed to play another song for you guys. This one is pretty rocked up for Johnny's show, but it's so great, D & D for my money is the best EC ever was. Love it! ❤️

I used to do the same thing when the Allman Brothers would play their Spring Residency at the Beacon Theater. I'd buy tickets for at least 10 shows. 2009 was incredible as it was their 40th Anniversary Tour. I usually try to get seats close to the front left cause that's where Greg always is. I got lucky and scored a single, front row dead center seat. Everyone knew it was gonna be a special Tour cause of the Anniversary, and sure enough, a good ways into the show, Warren Haynes just kinda casually says "Would y'all please welcome Mr Eric Clapton to the Stage"...and Eric strolls out and The roof almost came off the building. Beyond phenomenal. I've been really fortunate, living so close to NY City, to have seen some really incredible shows since the late 70s. There's always a few that really stand out. That was one of them. 😁

They could--and probably did in concert--jam for about 20 minutes more on this song. I used to see Jim Gordon where I worked in California. Sadly, he was a shadow of his former self. Not many of the medical staff knew who he was, or that he had won a Grammy. I soon enough educated them on that.

Sure, he had chart and "monetary" successes after that, but IMO that "magic" was long gone. When he did return, the only person I believe that continued to play with him was the bassist, Carl Radle, the rest of guys, Gordon and Whitlock did not return. Don't know if it would have lasted much longer, anyway, Clapton isn't the kind of personality that is going to just "blend" into a "band" forever, I think his ego needed to be out front. He's always struck me as a bit pompous and a loner, don't think he could have sustained even a "sideband" in the likes of Tom Petty or Bruce Springsteen.

I wish Clapton had these musicians in 1974. That was the first tour I got to see him on. He had Carl Radle with him for a number of years.
