    I learned to rake hay with that model. I forgot you could also tedder hay with it, because we so rarely used thar that feature. The memories of stacking on the wagon or in the barn are never forgotten. Some of those extremely hot muggy days you almost wished for rain.

    Great Video. I miss making hay like that. Somehow my $5K hay operation turned into $50K+! Miss those days. Thanks for sharing.

    Grew up making hay at my grandparent's farm. The memory of the '49 model B baling with the 14T baler! Pulling the loaded wagon up to the barn to upload, and stacking it high on the wagon.

    For those who weren't sure, the rake is a New Idea, not a Deere. We have one like it, it did good work till the drive gear broke, never used it to tedder. Always felt the less you stir the hay the less leaf shatter you get, but we mainly raise Alfalfa hay, on grass hay maybe the tedder option would be ok. I do have a Deere rake of that vintage, it does very good work as well, It likely will out last me.

    I rake with a rake like this into the early 1970's. They stood the test of time. If fact, I saw a rake like this at a consign auction this week

    A good video with nice older equipment making hay the way I remember doing it back in the late 50's and early 60's. Back then my Mom helped also!

    We had a take very similar to yours, also a Deere, but it's gears were boxed in by metal and ran in a gear lube. I do not know that I had ever seen one like yours with the gears exposed. Was fun to see the whole process. We mowed with a Deere #5 barcycle mower and baled with a Deere 216W. We also used bale forks to unload the bales into the barn. Hard work and yet we had a good time doing it. Plus the afternoon "snack time" with lemonade and cookies was always looked forward to. Thanks for the great memories!!

    I always knew you could use one of those rakes as a swath fluffer, but this is the first I've seen it used as such.

    This was the exact tractor/baler combination that I started driving as a little kid back in the sixties. I’m not sure if dad had a 24T but he soon moved up to the 336 model which was great.
    We had the 630 for quite a few years until one day the power steering locked up (which was a common problem) and the tractor veered into a tree and snapped the whole front end off.
    Later on we almost always ran a jd 3020 with the 336 baler. Loaded wagons by hand just like your video.
    I’ll bet I handled a million bales.

    if you stack the bales straight up like you are building a wall and don't climb up the load it is less work. It's really good that your wife will drive the tractor so you don't have to pick them off the ground!!!!

      He's using to do the tedding process if you look closely. tines are running in reverse

    • @Alwis-Haph-Rytte
      @Alwis-Haph-Rytte 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul, how in the hell do you run a ground driven rake in reverse?
      Look closer, it's grass with "clover". It would be insane to ted clover. It's higher in feed value than grass. So to "ted" the higher feed value off with a tedder is insane.

    • @Snowtruckdriver
      @Snowtruckdriver 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That very well could be true but if that rake isn't turning to fluff instead of windrow then tell me what it's doing

    • @Alwis-Haph-Rytte
      @Alwis-Haph-Rytte 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Paul, you were right, I apologize. I just looked again and looked at both 1:23 and 1:50. I have raked many acres, and this is the first time I've ever seen a rake go in reverse to ted. But you only ted grasses, not legumes like clover or alfalfa because it strips their leaves which lowers feed value. All our hay fields were Ranger Alfalfa and June Clover. We would combine the seed off of each in their last year of rotation so we could seed down a new hay field with the wheat or oats. The last alfalfa field we seeded in oats and we actually bought seed, Magnum from Dairyland seed company. Sometimes the cows would eat the oat straw bedding because of the clover in it, LOL. A fresh cut clover field smells sweet and good. But clover is just a 2 or 3 year field because it thins out.

      We used to have a similar model New Idea rake that had a reverse gear for teading. Simply flip the lever one way to turn the rake on or the opposite direction to tead
