A huge well done to everyone. Not a lot of people in London even know about it. That's a testament to the amount of planning that has gone into the project minimising inconvenience to Londoners of which I'm one. Many years ago I worked on the London water ring. @@PedroNeves-hm5xm Yes mate. Bit like the M25 (although much further in) its a ring running around the centre of London that's full of water. It therefore took the pressure of the antiquated cast iron mains enabling water to be pumped at a much lower pressure.

Actually, yes and no - it will greatly reduce the risk of discharge of any raw sewage into the River Thames, by providing surge capacity to cover the shortfall in treatment capacity when there is a rain storm. So you won't get sewage going into the sea from the Thames. But it won't make any difference to places where untreated sewage currently overflows directly into the sea.

Could they not have spent the money on increased filtration plants so that all the water going in the Thames was actually clean, not just nearer the sea?
that's basically the whole point of the tunnels. Read up on it. The whole idea is that it takes the main brunt of the sewage from London, to new filtration in the East End. Which can then be put into the thames, or back into the water system.
The water is returned to the Thames nearer to the sea, but only after it has been filtered and cleaned - so clean in fact it can also be returned into the water supply.

Yes they could have. But they would have built it in the wrong place. They would have missed out on some important detail in building it.
