  • In the past few episodes, we were in Munich exploring the history of the rise of Hitler and the Beer Hall Putsch. In this episode, we're venturing over to the city of Landsberg to look at the prison where he was held which later served as the final stop for a number of convicted war criminals of WWII. Along with that, we're exploring a cemetery that may very well hold the highest concentration of evil men of any cemetery plot in the world.

Hitler's prisons were like Disneyland next to the Jewish prisons in Russia and in the Ukraine. At least in Hitlers prisons there were Olympic size swimming pools, commissaries, brothels, soccer fields, theaters, and prisoners were paid with money to spend. None of that was in the Jewish prisons.

My wife and I were at Landsburg the past fall. We actually went into the parking lot and took pictures until a guard came out and told us we couldn’t. He was actually very nice and gave us a little history of the prison and told us Hitlers cell was now a storage area. We did not know about the graveyard but knew about the concentration camp just outside of town. It was one of three work camps that is still original and slowly falling apart. Very interesting

I have original photos of him there, some of his documents, news paper clippings and whole NPs, some of his insignia pieces, german souvenirs, IDs and passes, a Landsberg post card signed by a handful of men tried at the Dachau Trials, and a ton more. He passed away in 86 so I never got to meet him.

When I was in France, Belgium & Holland last year, it was eerie visiting the German graves, very cold, very weird, got a creepy feeling seeing all those flat grave stones, some with 2 or 3 under the same stone. Our guide told us the Belgians did not want them buried on their land, but I guess there was no way to get them back to Germany at that time. I also had no idea so many were actually hung/shot after the war. I had only read where many Nazis escaped their death sentences one way or another. Thank you for this great information!

He honest to god believed that all those who are not true believers in his radical green ideology should be killed as a start towards depopulating the planet with the end goal of having the population brought down to a few hundred thousand of those "worthy to be stewards of the environment".

My father was in the 103rd inf div WWII. He was in Patton’s 3rd army, & was also an interpreter. He was in the Battle of the Bulge when he first arrived. One of his final missions was to liberate a concentration camp in Landsberg named Kaufering. It is all but gone now. My daughter visited it a couple of years ago. Not much is left. The people in the area have been trying to completely wipe out any remains of it. Did you happen to go there? The stories my father told us were unimaginable. My dad will always be my hero.

When society loses faith in liberal values and human rights it is a small step to take. The holocaust is unique in its scale and organisation but whenever a society starts believing there are enemies out to get them and somebody tells them it's okay to take "decisive steps" to counter the threat that's where you end up. Just look around.

Not sure what the significance of this particular symbol is. One of the oldest uses of the cross symbol is the four spokes of the circular zodiac calendar which represent the two solstices and the two equinoxes that mark the changing of the seasons, and the circle represents the path of the sun, moon, and planets through the constellations. Even in Christian iconography you often see the crucifix depicted with a circle centered on the point where the vertical and horizontal lines intersect.

My guess is that the "roof" is mainly to protect the wooden cross from the weather. I noticed that all of the crosses were wooden, which will decay over time due to rain, frost etc; I suspect the "roof" is just there to preserve the cross for as long as possible.

I'm surprised they were buried in a cemetery and not cremated and the ashes scattered as the top Nazis (Goering, Ribbentrop, Kaltenbrunner, et al) were. Especially in a cemetery in the shadow of a chapel, usually considered hallowed ground.
I suppose the occupation authorities considered they'd "atoned"by virtue of the executions and gave them proper burials, but that's just a guess on my part.
I'll tell you, there's so much evil buried in that cemetery I'm amazed the grass grows.

Never got over what he saw there he said they could smell it for miles before they got there. They made the Germans go through the piles of bodies & some were still alive but they died a short time later. The towns folk denied knowing what was going on so they marched them over to witness the burial. He was in Germany when the war was over & said the German citizens treated them worse than the soldiers.
